i have a watch very similar to pic related that i inherited from a relative. there are some slight differences in indices and numerals, but the dial color and case color (rose) are identical. mine is in pristine condition apart from the 2 long scratches on mineral crystal that can be felt when going over them with your nail. i researched a bit and found out they were mass produced cheap watches with fragile cases. based on that and the fact that mine is in pristine condition im guessing it was worn shortly before mineral was damaged, stored and forgotten. most likely never even serviced. it runs good, didn't lose a second after 24 hours laying on a table (it has no strap) and chronograph works perfectly

so my questions are, is this watch wearable at all, should i send it to preemptive service or don't touch it while everything works since i wouldn't wear it more than couple of times a year anyway and should i replace the crystal, try to polish it or leave it as is?

i feel like it would look like a beacon strapped on to the wrist with that dial. especially with black suit.
if i could pull it off as a dress watch, then i would have much more options when it comes to my everyday watch, since i wouldn't have to buy something versatile. i also need strap color recommendation

>> No.14961351

For first timers in this thread, Vostok is a huge fucking meme. If you ever see anyone in public wearing one you can rest assured they browse /fa/ or /reddit/ (for their nauticalcore) and are likely to be insufferable. You may get the one dude that likes Atomic Blonde and the idea of hawking eastern products to the west or whatever the fuck justification he might have but as a respectable watch to wear in public in the west, Vostok is not it, chief.

Have it serviced if you really want to wear it. The oils in the movement will dry up and become abbrasives as opposed to lubricant after some years. Maybe have them pop in a new crystal as well, it can't cost that much. Old chronographs can be a pain, though. If it's an obscure movement there might not be any parts readily available and it can take much time to get it fixed when it breaks and old 50's chronos tend to break quite a bit.
Be careful with it. It doesn't say anything about shock absorbing technoglogy on the dial so it probably doesn't have any, that means it's very fragile.
For a strap I'd usually go with brown over black. Spend some money on the strap, have one made even. Look up what straps looked like in the 40's, 50's and 60's. They were made of pigskin a lot and that looks nice, not very dressy though. Go with a smooth leather without contrast stitching instead of croc or alligator to let the watch take center stage.

The Western watch market artificially inflated it's prestige through product placement, and did so well. A Rolex Submariner would have cost you 22 dollars in 1962 but is hundreds if not even tens of thousands now. There was no competition for these hucksters due to protectionism of the watch trade for years and years, much like de beers and diamonds. The first watershed came with the fall of the CCCP and the first imports coming in, initially being sold for prices similar to the baguettes of 90s america. With the increasing relaxation of restrictions from Russia in today's political climate there is something of an avalanche

Vostok Amfibia and Komandirskie are watches for poorfags and weirdoes. Where mainstream culture says to spend a decent car's worth of moolah on some fancy status symbol of Switzerland-nee-China, the poorfag option provides 80% of the richie-rich option (basic function, date window, waterproofing, handwinding, and automatic winding) at 0.2% the price, less the features one doesn't care about (such as Seiko-tier lume, crystal doped with unicorn shavings at the Schott glassworks which Leitz also uses, and the reassuring $10k price tag). It's a watch that richfags won't wear because it doesn't even exist. Vostoks violate the "work your way up to a decent watch (unless your dad already did, trust fund kid)" principle that metastasizes so-called western culture.

To quote Viper the Rapper, "motherfucker price tag money ain't no object".

I love them for their specs and features, but any proper ISO diver is more durable.

What's with all the ebayers from Japan that have a shit ton of higher end watches at prices that seem too good to be true? Worried they would be fake but they have loads of good feedback. One has the exact same pictures of a watch as another at a lower price. Worth taking the risk and just fucking them over with a chargeback if it's a franken/fake? I know this is a later reissue and not a vintage Heuer

An ISO diver doesnt need to be mechanical. I own a Citizen Eco-Drive (2005) and a Seamaster 300m quartz (1995). Both ticking like new and both have slcuba dived. As long as I use the technique I mentioned before, I can still press the adjust button with trimmed nails no problem, and with a little effort and luck I can do it with Mechanix Original gloves on. I'm curious if the entire assembly is recessed or if this is just a different sized button thrown in. If the latter, I wonder how hard it'd be to put a full size button in there.

Japan could be called the capital of luxury watch collectors, they have a office / business life style so high end watches are very popular over there.

There isn't many fakes in Japan, well less than anywhere else, I think it's the culture over there and stricter import checks.

The Japnese are the most honest watch dealers in the world, they show watches in there worst light, detail photos of any marks and wear, watches are graded on condition as well. They tend to polish their watches so it's not uncommon for them to be over polished thats the only down side.

Switch watches are just cheap over there because there is that many of them, grand seiko is more expensive over there than in the western, it's a pride thing I think.

You should have a problem, I was looking at the same listing last week but have a speedy already.

I like mine. It's not sacrificing "ease of use", it's no more difficult to read than any other watch. When someone asks you the time 99% of the time you'll round to the nearest 5 or 10 min, so I kind of like the relaxed but still practical feel. Yeah it's a bit of a gimmick but watches in general arguably are too and if I need to know to the minute I'll have my phone on me anyways.

A circular slide rule will compute muls and divs to an approximate 2-figure precision. A spot of common sense is used to determine what the resulting magnitude is going to be. Consider "scientific notation", i.e. 1.234e4 for 12340; to get the first two digits of its product with 3.456e-3 (i.e. 0.003456), you'd compute 12 * 35 to get 42, which corresponds to the first two figures of 426.4704 = 4.264704e2. The scale of the product is 4 - 3, plus one because the result is read as 42 and not 4.2 (note the decimal point). To get higher precision, do as you would using pen and paper.

This clear enough for you? Division is similar.

>Radio time keeping is a gimmick
Not really, dude. It's quite nice NEVER having to adjust your watch. Not even for DST. Solar power is also nice because the battery will last for over 10 years. The auto illumination feature is a little bit of a gimmick, but it's actually pretty nice to look at your watch and then BAM! it just lights up like you'd want it to. You can turn it off it bothers you too much, but I wouldn't say it detracts from the watch at all.

All that being said, a watch is a watch, and I do like the simpler Casios. I used the F105 for years. It just works.

A watch is supposed to be a timekeeping device. Instead of keeping time, radio-controlled watch delivers you the data it receives from an external source.

Solar power gives you more freedom to use various gimmicks, but the actual lifespan of a rechargeable battery should be pretty close to the lifespan of a regular lithium battery. For me a normal long-lasting battery will always be better than rechargeable, no matter how easy it is to recharge.

>> No.14965206

>Instead of keeping time, radio-controlled watch delivers you the data it receives from an external source.
It has a regular quartz movement, hoss. It loses +/- 15 seconds a month if it doesn't get its nightly radio updates. I'm telling you, it's a small thing, but it makes a really big difference. If I never charged it, it would still last a year before any features started getting disabled.

>It has a regular quartz movement, hoss. It loses +/- 15 seconds a month
And this is fine by me, I don't need more. And if I did, I'd rather put my money into a more accurate high-end quartz movement rather than into radio control. As I said, radio control goes against the fundamental principle of a timekeeping device.

>I'm telling you, it's a small thing, but it makes a really big difference. If I never charged it, it would still last a year before any features started getting disabled.
In this age of gadgets that need constant charging, I enjoy wearing a watch that will run for a decade without any external power source.

>GW-5000 is the Casio square taken to perfection
Last time I checked, it was 4x the price of DW5600. The more expensive G-Shock is, the less useful it becomes as a durable, but ultimately disposable item.
The most extreme example of this is GMW-B5000D, which is the G-Shock equivalent of a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen.

>> No.14965302

You're a lunatic. The watch has a solid quartz movement but benefits from the radio correction.

Hardly. The only watch I would even consider "disposable" was the F105.

More than once I ended up pussying out and going with a blank / seethrough caseback when given the option of an engraving. Basically when you ever resell the watch, it's worth what ever the second hand market says it's worth minus whatever a replacement case back costs because nobody wants your shit written on their watch. And, I probably wouldn't want my own shit written on my watch long term either. Kind of like how I usually get a watch, put it on a nato strap and feel like a cool kid and then end up going back to the bracelet it came with sooner or later, as if to not taint the watchmakers' vision with my childish need to be extra special. Just let the watch speak for itself. You don't wear graphic tees because you're not a faggot, you don't put embrodery on your sweater because you're not a faggot, you don't put an engraving on a watch because you're not a faggot. My 2 cents.

Its an art deco bulova that goes arround 100-250 dollars on ebay right now. Even if I were in dire need of money, I have better things to sell than this watch. And I'm not the kind to buy and sell watches either.
I also don't think an engraving goes against the watchmakers vision of the watch like a nato strap on a dress watch does, I mean, back engravings were a thing back then and this watch in particular has a large plain and empty space between the serial number and the model name on the caseback that is pretty much designed for something like an engraving. I don't think it'll bother me at all considering I'll only see it when I take it off to actually read it. I see what you mean with your clothes analogies and letting the watch speak for itself, but this is not a radical overhaul that will drawn everyone's attention and change the watch design, no one but me will know there's an engraving back there unless someone asks me to see the watch.

I just hate when people act like it's about the price, like it's only real if it's a thousand bucks. But apart from that I get the sentiment. I used to wear an overpriced armani fashion watch, which is in reality just a 50¢ chinese quartz movement cased by fossil, and then someone slaps an armani logo on top and the idiot that was me pays, like, 150 bucks for something that's honestly closer to 10 bucks in value. That wasn't my first real watch. It's something I flat out don't wear anymore because it's a tad embarrassing. A casio f91w meanwhile, that's a modern marvel, 10 bucks and you get a watch full on with a stopwatch, day date calendar, backlight and an alarm, at 7 years of battery life. 10 bucks, that's something you really need to stop and take a minute to wrap your head around. The watch they use to equip terrorist militias with cheap, effective time pieces, the watch they used to build bomb timers supposedly. The pinnacle of efficiency and practicability, value so good it feels like you're cheating someone out of something. I use it for sports, I use it at work. Relatedly, I recently got a 5-ring Zulu strap from CNS and was immediately dissatisfied with how stiff it was overall. Seemed impossible to adjust in the "correct" way. So I ended up wearing it like a regular Nato strap with an extra ring for a couple of days until it got flexible, and now it's just peachy either way. tl;dr: some CNS straps, particularly the fatter ones, need a wearing-in period. Definitely a solar G Shock. I used their Rangeman watch when I was in the army and it served me well

Is there a watch that has smooth seconds hand and looks like pic related, but has automatic movement? Bonus points for being cheap, I can't afford spring drive

Zenith Defy Inventor, 18hz - 36 ticks per second, purely mechanical movement with a crazy silicon oszilator inside and you basically can't make out individual ticks anymore

loses the bonus points for not exactly being cheap at ~15k, oh and I just saw you're looking for one that has a similar look to the Seiko, but you know what I'm gonna post it anyway because I love any excuse to show this watch to anyone

>39mm of surface
>42mm diameter watch

rule of thumb, if the lugs poke out from your wrist, it's too large, not just for a dress watch, but in general

be lucky you get to wear dope ass ~35mm vintage pieces without looking like a clown, not all of us are that blessed

Well then I'll just keep it as is.
I like how the hands look, I just find it a bit irritating that a dive watch has such a lack of visibility in the dark.

I think you are right. The ideal size to my wrist is probably 38-40
> rule of thumb, if the lugs poke out from your wrist, it's too large
It wouldn’t. 39mm is just the flat area on top of my wrist. I just measured the circumference of my wrist and it is a tad over 7 inches. My father has a 35mm watch that I tried and it is most definitely too small.

try it on and don't get bent up over 2mm on a spec sheet, watches can wear drastically differently, a 38mm diver looks like a kids toy on my wrist but if you have a minimalist bauhaus style watch that's all dial with the case tapering to the back, 38mm almost feels too large

not all of them have that, you can find seiko-esque ones if you squint your eyes a little

Byproduct of the high frequency quartz is that it's actually super accurate even by quartz standards, my precisionist gained about 12 seconds in a year. Movement is made in house too. Kind of amazing what value you get with bulova really, the watch cost me around 200 bucks. If you dig the sweeping seconds hand, I can wholeheartedly recommend those.
