It's really not that simple. The major issue you'll run into is appropriateness.

Or to put it bluntly, a good suit versus a bad suit are very obvious.

I can go on, but even if you have a very well fitted, well made suit, it will still look bad if it is not appropriate. In the US, there are very few occasions that call for business formal, or dress formal even. So, wearing a suit when you A. Don't work in a suit. B. Don't have an occasion for wearing a suit is inherently bad looking. It's akin to wearing sneakers to a wedding, or a parka in summer, etc.

Young guys in suits look good when the suit is good when the situation makes sense. E.g., wearing a suit to a wedding, or a to a work that needs a suit.

Generally speaking, there is two rules:

a) be handsome (i.e. good facial bone structure, hairline, beard growth, etc.)
b) be in shape (so your shoulders will fill out that jacket nicely)

And most guys don't get their suit fitted, so, no wonder it looks like shit

You wont though. Most off the rack clothing just fits, but it doesn't fit great. If you had some casual item tailor fit you'd see the difference. Some suits are fine off the rack but as they are formal they should have that fit, being the right arm length, shoulder length, chest size and so on. That's why most off the rack wont do it.

Really people should learn basic tailoring, that's what I did. You will be able to take jackets in and do slight size alternations and it's pretty simple.

I also loved how the suits and clothes evolved with the years. On most show it would feel kinda forced and inaccurate but because these are ads people, you basically expect them to dress in perfect accordance to the year's fashion trends and whatnot.

Suits are about the tailoring to fit. Even an off the shelf suit can look good once it gets touched up to the person that is going to wear it. A lot of young guys just don't know and think it will look good off the rack.

Suits are high maintenance compared to casual wear. Dry cleaning bills add up after a while.
