How I think it works is there's a thing called "vanity sizing" where they did stuff like make what used to be size 14 size 10 and so on. This was so fat old boomer women could feel more good about themselves, thinking they still fit into their old size, which encouraged them to buy more clothes.
This means on the lower end of the scale (ie. model-weight women) they had to start doing shit like having "size 000."
So a normal-weight woman would have a non-zero size, a positive or plus number size, and this became a slang term for kind of fat bitches.
Part of this is also down to vanity. An unfuckable pig of a woman can say "I'm hot because I'm plus-sized like that model Robyn Lawley."
Women can unironically believe that they are fuckable because they found a way to identify with a fuckable woman, there's a hive mind thing there.
