Shoe list link got updated in OP and oskarsalomonsson is back in Instagrams list

Topic for starting the thread: are string loafers something acceptable in F/W, or just for spring and summer?

>> No.14913563

In my opinion, loafers in general shouldn't be worn in late autumn or winter

>> No.14913570

I say save them for spring/summer. I would go with a boat shoe instead though. Speaking of does any anon think that gold cup sperries are worth the price jump? The sole on mine finally came off after a long time. I was so sad to see them go.

Shut the fuck up if you don't know what you're talking about. You can clearly see the norwegian construction, which makes sense in combination with the vibram sole.

>> No.14913616

Tassel loafers yeah, been wearing them with thicker socks recently and doing okay in the cold, not good for too long a period though aha

Coat wise this pattern and cut is quite popular currently, in the UK I know Debenhams do okay quality coats, which is where I got this one. Other than that? Higher quality wise vintage is the way to go anon

Not my thing. It is an informal derby that wants to look like a boat shoe (check that stitching and sole). For a derby you probably want Dainite or a JR sole, and this looks like a Vibram (which I'd keep for boots).

How do I get over and come to accept wear and tear?

I know part of the charm of TIP is the age and patina, but when my clothes get scuffed or damaged I just think of them as ruined.

It's particularly bad when the damage isn't "the wear of time", but something stupid and preventable. I somehow got paint on my navy chinos, then stripped garment colour trying to wipe it off. I accidentally scratched my brand new Repp #1 tie all down the middle after one wear. I fucked my favourite pair of wool gammarelli socks thinking I could use a pill-shaver on it.

Also, the blindness of online shopping is immensely frustrating. I'm hoping these are just the growing pains of updating my wardrobe so suddenly

You have no idea what you are talking about, that is a Norwegian welt. Norwegian welt does not always have decorative braiding, it only has the welt run on the outside of the shoe like in the diagram, fixed to the vamp by one or more stitches and at least one stitch to the sole. Paraboots and Heschungs are usually Norwegian welted. Please do not post if you don't know what you are talking about.

Myself, I have a pair of Catalpas, which are a slightly more formal alternative - the split toe isn't hand stitched but instead much more discreet, the leather isn't oiled but baby calf, and there isn't a bellows tongue. The profile is slightly sleeker. I really like these with tweed sports coats, flannels, cords and denim - the country-style sole needs some thicker fabrics to work well.

In the realm of classic men’s style, preconceptions are, of course, numerous, and more often than not— spread and maintained by shop clerks, either out of interest (to boast the so-called merits of a specific piece) or out of sheer lack of education.

The most infamous of these preconceptions are those pertaining to details that allegedly denote the quality of a garment. Widely believed and still very much alive, those preconceptions include, but are not limited to : working buttonholes, (flashy) monograms on the linings, top-stitching, and other so-called “tailored” details that are overblown selling points to which dishonest clerks, capitalizing on the revival of interest in men’s style, like to play on.

I do know that blake can be okay for loafers. But usually blake is used because it is far cheaper to do than GYW but still looks "stitched". So many crappy shoes and boots from mall brands like Gant, Makia etc. use blake so that they can overcharge for their "stitched shoes that you can repair". The times blake is actually used because of its advantage (mainly lightness for loafers) are few and far between. And for higher end shoes, hand welting produces the advantages of blake with far superior construction and durability. (handwelting eliminates the need for cork filling and thus makes for lighter shoes)

So how does /tip/ feel about elbow patches on a dress shirt? Not worth it? Ugly? Obviously I'd patch the left elbow. It's worth noting that this is only an elbow problem, I inspected the rest of the shirt and can't find any other thinning/weak areas.

Their shit isn't made in some sweatshop and is good quality, so it will cost you. I need some help boys. I need recommendations for pants. I have big thighs, and I like my pants high wasted. Legs are long but proportional. I prefer to wear suspenders due to a small waist, usually the torso is layered up to create a more proportional look. If I wear a belt it need to be tight or else they move around all day, and if its tight it just shows off my tiny waist.

If I can just get something passable I will get it tailored, but I don't even have a stating point.

>> No.14916906

I have a similar body to yours: big thighs, hip and seat, small waist and upper body in general. While I think that proportions are not a problem in my case, I also find it very hard to find fitting pants. Even standard fit looks like leggings on me.
The only good trousers i own are those made by a tailor, which have a nice drape without looking baggy. I will try asking for a pair of high-rise trousers next month and will report how it turns out.
Getting it done like this can be expensive, but you can choose the fabric, pleats, pockets, buttons, rise, et cetera. It will probably be the way to go for me.

I'm not sure where else to post this so I guess I'll ask the rich white guy thread.

How can I learn to deal with the fact that I grew up really privileged? It seems that a lot of people grew up with incredible amounts of hardship but I had parents who could afford nice things/schools/universities when I was growing up. Am I supposed to apologize to people who grew up poor? Donate to charitable causes? Or just live with it and try to give my children an equally nice life? Something feels wrong with spending someone's rent payment on a pair of wingtips when there are people who don't have place to sleep tonight. Or do I just need to get over it?

Kek. You are "priviliged" because of a multi-generational effort for the construction of a society through the cretion of lineages that span hundreds of years. Your material conditions are merely factors that nurture you into fulfilling the social position that you ought to have. Your life is only the latest iteration of the efforts of thousands of men who came before, so try not to dissapoint and put your privilege to good use. And doing pointless charity and pseudo-moral actions is not a good use of your hard earned conditions.

Pretty much this. As the other anon says, throwing money at charities (or god forbid, apologies to whoever) is typically a waste of money and just an attempt to salve a conscience that shouldn't be hurting in the first place.

There's nothing wrong with money and there's even less wrong with class, just don't be a vulgar, snobbish little oik about it. Strive to live up to your position (whatever it is), that's the best thing you can do. Cultivate magnanimity. Don't brag. (Actually, here's one point where your neurosis might be useful. A slightly embarrassed air when someone alludes to the price of anything you're wearing is often appropriate. Refraining from buying something you like out of guilt is not.) Be friendly, sociable, kind, but don't let people walk all over you.

Suppose you give up your money and live like a pauper...

You will only have:
- thrown away money that was not yours to squander
- sent off the money somewhere else
- made yourself dependent upon others when you needn't have, causing people to resent you
- implied that you can only act maturely and responsibly without money (making your maturity seem quite contingent)

In reality, having money and inheritance should not make your life any easier. It's not easy, is it?--and if it really is, I assure that no man worth his salt has much envy for you! A man with no possessions might have less responsibilities than you, isn't it so? It is the duty of every man to act responsibly, fairly, and in good faith towards others according to his own unique circumstances. Having more or less money or status than the other guy does not give you any special advantage in this regard.

Another way to look at it is that every man is in exactly your shoes; you are not special. Every man inherited something of tremendous value, no? A citizenship in a country where his fathers lived and worked, a mother tongue, a mind and a body, a family, a morality, a heart... It would be foolish to forfeit these things because other people may not have them--those who don't have their own responsibilities (one of which is not to resent those who have more than they). Your job as their inheritor is to use them for their true purpose and to an exceptional degree--and that would make you a model for every man.
