I knew I was going to get some response like this. Look, the most widely loved person I know, someone whose wake was flooded with literally like two dozen regulars from the bar he went to, plus dozens of other friends from across different worlds, who had a long term girlfriend, killed himself two weeks ago. Depression hits everyone, and it's not rational.

Also, quantity of connections says nothing about their depth or warmth.

As far as me? I'm not the most or least socially isolated person. I have friends, but maintaining emotionally intimate friendships is fraught for me and many of them have just fizzled out in confusing and deeply painful ways. I'm not a virgin, but I can count the sexual partners I've had on one hand. I've had one relatively short long term romantic relationship.

We live in a deeply fucked, alienating, toxic, human connection killing culture. That hits everyone, regardless of status or lifestyle. It makes me think of something Fred Moten said, coming out of a different context but all the more applicable for it (and that's kind of at least a corollary to his point):
