More broadly applicable is bright IR lights in a hat or glasses. Will light you up like a flare on camera but not quite so attention getting to the naked eye. If the cameras have their own IR spotlights you can even get away with some retro-reflective stick-ons.

Ah yes, the "Rupertpunk" aesthetic.

Well it's simple: you start with basic deviantart-tier tacticool garbage not unlike Mr Concept Art's parodic designs.

Then you ask someone (preferably also from deviantart) to buy some pieces that he thinks would look at home in a completely random scifi IP that actually has had a billion different aesthetics over the years, to ensure that he has no fucking idea what to pick.

And then you ask a second guy to just buy whatever he thinks looks "retro" even though his idea of "retro" is just 2011 fashion.

And then you ask a THIRD guy to build you some sort of homemade coat out of plastic bags and literal trash, but with ancient Japanese sewing techniques for some reason.

And then you tell them that they fucked up, and that it should be more like your creative vision, so you draw crude marker sketches of what you wanted all along.

So they get their sewing kits, and try their best to make the pieces they bought for you as ugly as your sketches.

You slap all that shit together, then spray a muddy greenish wash over it to ensure that all the colors become puke-like.

Thus, you achieve the Rupertpunk aesthetic.

I started with neuromancer and loved it so much I started reading other Gibson. I’ve heard snow crash is childish compared to Gibson so I haven’t started it because there is so much other Gibson to read, and I also didn’t want it to ruin my perspective on the whole cyberpunk genre

>> No.14867998

>>14867985
I don't think childish is the right word to describe Snow Crash, but maybe more colorful? It's a book that obviously doesn't take itself seriously at all times but still delivers a grim story and introduced many great ideas. When I first heard about it I immediately dismissed it when I read that the main character's called Hiro Protagonist and that he works as a pizza delivery guy for the mafia. That sounds incredibly off-putting. I forced myself to read it regardless and having read it I think I'd call it the second best cyberpunk book of all time. Give it a chance if you're ever in the mood, it's still dark, still raunchy and a great read.

Also kudos for reading other Gibson. I know Neuromancer/the Sprawl trilogy is the first (and sometimes only) thing everyone talks about when talking Gibson but I always prefered his Bridge trilogy. It seems grittier and has a cyberspace construct of Kowloon Walled City, which is really cool.

Compared to Gibson, Snow Crash is kinda goofy. I don't mean that in such a bad way either, its more so like the suggestions of the future are also very exaggerated. There was no desire for subtlety for the intended messages.

The Bridge Trilogy is gonna be real relevant soon with Hong Kong nowadays etc.

Amazon is producing the Peripheral as a series. I have high hopes for cyberpunk inspo in every episode.

I used to hang out at a cafe in a major city in China. This place was right next to a high end shopping area with all the major designer and a new luxury apartments. But a couple blocks in the other direction was an older more run down apartment complex with stores at the bottom selling hardware parts, electronics, noodles, haircuts and prostitutes. While drinking espresso I would work on coding projects as I am software engineer. This was done from my Linux laptop and I was using VPN to get around the great firewall and also be able to post on 4chan. Moot blocked posting from China, not the Chinese government blocking access. Sometimes my I would do coke if the right people were around. The thing is, if you are doing it and getting it from people who work in the government or have police connections, then you don’t really have to worry about getting caught. My outfit was usually a plain t-shirt in some dark neutral color with all labels removed, skinny fit grey raw denim with geobaskets and a leather jacket if cold out.

I agree that cyberpunk shouldn't be watered down and lose its boundaries due to excessively vague or subjective definition, but conversely excessive restriction means the genre can't grow or change and the 'punk' aspect of it is lost. If self expression is to be preserved within the boundaries of cyberpunk creating a definition as specific as the one that you have proposed doesn't work. Alternatively if you're an unimaginative ThinGrey sheep then your definition works fine.

>but conversely excessive restriction means the genre can't grow or change
that is not only false, since you can just add stuff to it like "cyber" stuff, but would also still be a good thing even if it was true
>and the 'punk' aspect of it is lostand this is not a bad thing
Nobody cares about the 'punk' aspect we're talking about the PUNK aspect
>If self expression is to be preserved within the boundaries of cyberpunk creating a definition as specific as the one that you have proposed doesn't work
yes it does
it has worked for millions and millions of people for decades.

It may not work for your cowardly incel ass but it works. Everyone who isn't a coward is expressing himself through fashion all the time anyway. One's desire to fit into a subculture is a completely valid thing to express and it's one of the desires that allowed punk to become a thing.

Being punk is not about being imaginative or expressing yourself, it's about expressing yourself in this very specific manner.

>> No.14877342

No. I am saying being punk is to conform to the punk stereotype, as opposed to other stereotypes one wishes to rebel against by conforming oneself to the punk stereotype.

And it's a good thing because the punk stereotype is worth conforming to.

You seem to be mistaking "punk" for "contrarian", and while contrarianism may lead a lot of people to becoming punk, it's also what prevents a lot of people from becoming or staying punk once they realize that contrarianism exists within every single culture and that punk is not special in that regard.

>> No.14877359

Different anon here but, even the life and style we characterize as "punk" fits/falls into a category. As much as punk is about rebellion and non conformity, it still has a certain look that conforms into a pink stereotype. All the hard ass, cheap beer drinking, diy shows punks tend to fall into the worn/painted leather jacket, combat boots, piercings, crazy hairstyles/colors aesthetic.

And it really didn't take long for the first attempts to diversify punk to veer off into a very distinct offshoot.
in 1980, the Bowie fans who tried to dress elegant and expensive while still being punk did call themselves "punk", but in 1982 they were "new romantics" even if they rejected the label, and by 1983 the "new wave" was its own thing along with all the other "post-punk" scenes, even if goths kind of manage to ride the line.

No no no.

"imagination" and "underpinning philosophy" are not cowardice themselves. They are merely excuses to be a coward.
They are the flimsy veil which cowards hide themselves behind, because, being too scared of styling their hair into a mohawk, or to put spikes on their jacket, being afraid of not being able to pull it off, they create an abstract, fantasmagoric notion of "punkness" that's vague enough to encompass what they feel comfortable wearing.

Speaking of philosophy, "underpinning philosophy" is to cowardice what goodness is to weakness in the words of Callicles (whom Socrates failed to prove wrong because he was a bitch, by the way)

This whole argument you two retards are having reminds me of this time that my friend and I were driving past the park and saw the DnD larpers with their giant foam swords.
We turned around, pulled over, and got out to watch their battles and check out the costumes they made. It was pretty fucking amazing that they had found this niche that they wanted to be a part of, and had a creative and social outlet because of it. They didn't give a fuck, and they got to hang with their friends.
