if anyone is still following this, I found a snippet from an obscure paper that cites a 1942 patternmaking document for the war department. however I'm not a patternmaker (or even someone who sews a lot) so I'm pretty oblivious as to how to take this from a diagram to a clothing, and where to sew. any help is appreciated.

yes, the bits that look like they're 3D are folds/darting
the triangle superimposed on the sleeve is there to show you the focus of the curve, as with the shape attached. the sleeve is the shape with curved edges.

The back line is made due to sewing two sides together. The darts are diamond looking shapes under the pockets. The question mark labeled bits may be separate panels. Older patterns often used separate panels so the panels could be arranged on a boot of fabric get the most out of the least material.

Regarding sewing I suggest you start with a commercial pattern of a t shirt. A t shirt is very simple. 4 parts. It is a basic project that introduces you how to draw patterns, how to cut fabric, stitch with a machine and how 2d pieces turn into a 3d whole.

Regarding the jumpsuit my first suggestion is to scale all the parts from the image to your size. Taking the green line, the distance between your waist and the ankle as basis. I don't think the pockets have inside lining. These are initial thoughts and I am open to suggestions from others. I'm not entirely sure about the size of the other leather straps.

no worries, i will get home and post it. today i bought some canvas to try to make something. might try that pattern but i would be disappointed if i went through a lot of work and ended up with a carhartt jacket

to be fair i don’t know enough sewing to make anything cool, but i’ll at least try, why not

to all tentatively interested anons in this thread: simple sewing is not that hard. but you have to be willing to screw up a bit. making your own clothes is a rewarding and enjoyable hobby. what's more, it is a skill that i believe is important to preserve in the home/community, as it has largely been taken over by industrialized large scale processes and vast conglomerates. compared with a hundred or even fifty years ago, how many modern housewives (or house husbands, for that matter) do you think choose to, or even have the ability to, sew clothes for their families? mass production has its place and there are many items that are certainly easier to make in a factory setting. but wouldn't you rather have your gran knit you a cozy hat?

start simple and before you know it you'll be having a good time.

There is no pattern. I switched the collar and a sleeve of a blue sweater with a red one. As for the geometric forms you sew it 'inside'. I don't know if there is a term for it and I am not a native speaker, but I can try to explain.
1. Imagine you want a blue sweater with a red square with a circumference of, let's say, 20x20 cm.
2. Cut a hole of 18x18cm in the blue sweater. It gives you a seam allowance of 1 cm.
3. Cut a piece of red fabric of 22x22 cm. It gives you a seam allowance of 1 cm.
4. With the good sides of the fabric facing each other, straight stitch one side. Cut in the corners just near the stitch, so you can fold the fabric. Stitch another side etc. Your stitching has to follow the 20x20 circumference.
Is that clear enough?

this is a nice coat, i tried to make the arm one time but cocked it up a bit since i just eyeballed it instead of blowing it up. really elegant simple cut. i will try again eventually
this isn't the precise coat i think (it's striped) but if you look at the sleeve you can see that the seam sort of spirals from the underarm to the outside of the wrist. lovely

uh it's all in italian of which i know nothing but i just figured it out based on my previous knowledge. the colored bits are likely extraneous design details. remember, dotted lines are folds and solid lines are cuts so just imagine folding in all the dotted lines for a better idea of the shape.

the sleeve is just assembled as it's shown on the pattern, sew along the edges and it should come out properly, the apex of the curve will connect to the shoulder seam i imagine.
try making a smaller scale version to figure out how the pattern pieces fit together... the only thing i notice is that the pocket pattern is not shown, unless the orange bit is supposed to be a big-ass patch pocket.

there are websites that do yardage but much of it is walmart-tier. order samples if you can. otherwise you can find offcuts and remnants on ebay and etsy and such but you have to do most of your judgement based on pictures

...i'm too lazy to scan all these individually
basically cut the shape shown, if it has a notch in it (i.e. 13/14) cut it out and join the edges together to give it a curve. numbers that are consecutive are meant to go together; one should be slightly larger than the other to accommodate for padding volume
copying patterns 100% is not as important as understanding why they are drafted the way they are and how to alter them in 3 dimensions
