Friendly reminder for new posters joining our general, Seiko watches are overpriced shitters with terrible QC and are shilled by people who don't know any better. The brand has been cashing in on their name and recognition for the past decade, using it as an excuse for poor quality and QC, and hasn't released a watch worth buying at the price in forever.

Rubber seals degrade over time, though it depends on other conditions as well. The humidity, sweat and or water from other sources (tapwater, lakes etc) will damage it and rubber seals slowly turn solid over time. The F91 is weird in that it has no rubber seals and just has a well screwed in steel caseback (more like a backplate).

>Can a diver's watch or G-Shock from year 2000 still be perfectly fine when it comes to water resistance if it hasn't been in salt water?
Hard to say, and if they from that yearspan they were likely worn and used so it's best to change the seals and gaskets.

it's not an aesthetically pleasing watch. it's a tool watch, it's not a dress watch or a watch that resembles or goes along well with jewelry. it's function over form. it works it has a lot of features and its merit lies within its practicality. the mechanical watch hype is based on not needing a battery and being interested in horology and luxury items that you can leave behind for your kids/grandkids.

>>14810768
The mechanical watch doesn’t need battery but is less durable and requires more maintenance than solar powered watch. There is no mechanical watch in the world which would last longer than a g-shock or other quartz (even after thousands of dollars for service) . The planned obsolescence of most modern electronics shouldn’t give you impression that the electronic watches are not reliable. I agree that this g-shock can’t be worn on all occasions but in 99% of the cases is fine as everyday watch. For some more formal events something more elegant is required, agree, but even so $500-$1000 quartz watch will offer you case quality and finishing on the same level as several thousand dollars mechanical watch. Most people who are into mechanical watches have no idea how they work, for them it’s a black box no less than a quartz. There is no “engineering” involved in the automatic movement - not on the level of real engineering at least. Engineering is all about solving problems and accurate mobile timekeeping is a problem solved long ago (with quartz). Let’s be honest - 99% of the people who buy expensive mechanical watch do it because they can flex with the price they paid. People who buy cheap mechanical watches do it because they can’t afford the expensive one but want to flex as well. I can understand why people who really know how a mechanical watch works and can even work on them buy automatics, they are really “in the hobby”. But the mass consumer who is clueless of what’s inside the watch and still buys mechanical watch and dare to tell me that quartz/electronic watches are somehow inferior is cringe inducing. Mechanical watches are scam no less than the diamond scam.

/wt/ is just another thread in a long string of communities on this site that cater to the “bugmen” (don’t like that term but idk what else to call it) who’s personalities consist of what media they consume and what products they buy. Purchasing watches is a not a skill, it’s not a hobby, it’s not something that can be translated into enriching experiences. It goes along well with the other “4chan hobbies” such as:

mechanical keyboards
craft beer
hair product
expensive headphones
fountain pens
marvel movies
video games

They’re not real hobbies. They’re just ways to spend money.

”what’s the most amount of money I can spend that will make me superior to the plebs who haven’t discovered this niche community like I did (20 min ago)???”

I mean, flipping watches is a hobby. Building watches is a hobby. Repairing watches is definitely a hobby. But buying them is not. It’s just an activity that we all like. We’re all just slightly more advanced than the dipshit who browses this thread and determines that he needs a Grand Seiko. The advanced version, of this dipshit, by the way, is the richer dipshit who buys the empirically boring IWC shitter.

These threads is just a crowd-sourced machine that allows people to verify that they have the right opinions, the right tastes. It’s not a hobby. It’s barely even an interest. It’s just a way for us to spend money. But spend money with the approval of other people who have been suckered into spending money to impress other (anonymous) suckers. No one will ever recognize your Stowa Marine. No one you meet in real life will ever know what a Sinn is. The only people who will are other anons.

The only watch that will catch anyone’s eye is a Patek, and you didn’t need to waste hours and hours on this thread to figure that out.

I like the BB58 but wasn't 100% on an aluminium bezel insert. Like everything else about it but sometimes it looks a bit dull vs other shinyer divers.

The AT was in the running until I realised it isn't that easy to read in some lighting which is the most important thing to me. I wasn't in love with the dial but liked the case shape and movement, polished links take it or leave it as well.

I'd probably pick up a used pelagos, ceramic matte bezel, ajustable clasp and I don't have any titanium watches over the AT and maybe BB58.

I ended up with a older ceramic seamaster, wanted a gloss dial, something more shiny, all my other watches have and are matte.

Better to list the brands to look for.

>Citizen
Great beater if you don't care about horology. EcoDrive is hassle free and they offer a lot of utility. I wore an EcoDrive perpetual calendar for several years and really liked it. It has a secondary time zone and alarm as well. Great travel watch and was only a couple hundred. They are not very aesthetically pleasing, but great value.

>Hamilton
If you want an automatic watch, this is the best department store brand. The khaki field and pilot watches are pretty solid for the price.

>Seiko
Also good automatic watch if you want a diver. Some of them are fugly, but most of the prospex are nice in terms of function and aesthetic. There's also a lot of aftermarket support in terms of straps/bracelets/bezel inserts.

>GShock
If you want something digital it's hard to beat this brand.

Everything else is shit.
