This is blatantly untrue. People in western Europe just switched from shit like Gucci to more subtle stuff. For example Volvo and Tesla are the new BMW and Audi, obnoxious branded clothing has been traded in for minimal as fuck Scandinavian sweaters for €200 each.
Not to mention the biggest status symbols today are signs you live in a wealthy area and live an upscale lifestyle such as biking to work (meaning you live in the city) or buying at bio friendly supermarkets. Also of course going on far holidays whenever it suits you, ie Costa Rica trips in December.

It's certainly not a status vehicle, but the most attention I've ever gotten from any car I've owned was surprisingly a Crown Vic ex-police car I bought on a complete whim. I've had over 20 cars over the years, almost all of them were MUCH cooler and more expensive but for some reason I couldn't get gas or park next to someone without them saying something or complimenting the car. Bone stock, just a nice black paint job but while I'd get occasional car guys talking about my 540, Monte, Impala, Camaro, Charger.... everyone asked or started conversations about the Vic. It really seems to be a car that's surpassed just being a car and integrated itself into pop culture as a whole. Considering how dirt cheap they are, I highly recommend everyone own one at least once in their life.

The only way to make a beamer a head turner is to turn it into an art car.
