Probably a bit of both. Oud does have a kind of sweetness to it and western oud based frags tend to add more sweetness to try and balance it out or make it appeal to a wider audience.

Some houses definitely blur the lines. Like Tom Ford, for example. He’s a designer, but his frags are definitely much more niche. Niche and designer are a bit tricky to define. I’d say the best indication would be the availability in the retail market (ie. pretty much every store that sells frags will sell, say, Dior, but not a ton sell Amouage).

The main thing is that niche scents are designed and marketed more towards connoisseurs, so the compositions often tend to be more unique and complex, but often in ways laymen may not enjoy. That’s why I recommend starting with some of the male designer classics then working your way up to niche once you have a basic understanding of the fundamentals. Also again, niche fragrances tend to be much more expensive, so probably not a worthwhile investment when you’re just starting out and don’t really know what you like yet.

I’ve used surrendertochance, they carry a lot of designer samples including packs specifically for trying out classic men’s scents. They’re a good site, I’d start with them.

I didn’t love it at first. I got a similar effect. The opening was really bitter and vegetal, but that dissipates pretty quickly on my skin and the cedar and warm base become really dominate. It just works on me. For some reason spraying from a full bottle vs a sample, it’s a lot less harsh and vegetal and gets to a warmer base pretty quickly. My girlfriend who doesn’t like strong scents surprising loved it too.
