For me alot of it was in going to shows when I was a teen, also consuming alot of media. Unironically movies have given me alot of inspo which I adapted to mold my then maturing fashion tastes. Not going to lie lots of early /fa/ lurking back in pre 2012 and watching early 2010's fashion runways gave me some new ideas for styling what tastes I already had. Way early compared to the city I live in A bit of scarface+contemporary style gaudy streetwear+ punk+some light minimalistic pieces. The internet and popularity of /fa/ and tumblr type websites which I never went on but plenty of peers did at the time, disseminated lots of trending styles really quickly.

What I personally do is:
Jackets/Coats- sleeves cannot shroud your hand when arms are completely relaxed (unless of course you're going for oversized), the body of the jacket shouldn't drown you in comparison, depending on the intended fit, the jacket should generally end at or around your waist. It's ok if it's a little longer though, especially if it isn't intended to end there.
Sweatshirts- if going for a relaxed outfit it can be ok for the sleeves or body to be a bit big, but generally they are supposed to have sleeves that end at your wrist, and a body that ends at your waist.
Shirts/Sweaters- sleeves end at your wrist, body ends a bit lower than your waist for tucking, body should also fit close to your frame (again, unless going for something oversized on purpose).
Pants- waist should sit comfortably on top of your hips, leg should end where it makes slight contact with your shoes when standing up. You can allow up to a full break, but I don't recommend any more than that. The legs can fit wide or close to your leg, that's up to you. You can also decide how much higher than your shoes you are ok with your pants ending. You can cuff or crop pants to be pretty much as high as you feel looks good with your outfit.
I'm nowhere near an expert though, that's all just my opinion.
