Most watches from Rolex you'll make money on if you wait long enough especially if you buy pre-owned. Wear shouldn't affect price too much as long as the watch is serviced first as that'll cleanup most watches to almost new. The only other brand at that level, or frankly even better, is Patek. A PP Perpetual Calendar is guaranteed to return a profit going by their track record. Just don't overpay just to get the current hot watch. Paying over list for a current release is retarded.

However most of us aren't able to afford watches in that price range. So unless you get lucky and happen to purchase the new hot model early or find a really good deal somewhere don't buy a watch expecting to make money. Watches are like cars. Buy new and suffer instant depreciation but watches are unique in that after that they should retain their value and possibly, slowly, increase.

Quartz watches get called HAQ around 15s per year, and Swiss chronometer certification is 25s per year. A cheapass ETA movement with thermal compensation meets those requirements, which a ton of more expensive quarts watches don't.

>> No.14649531

The really high end complications (repeaters, sonnerie etc) are even better because they are true limited editions. You need to be a good valued customer already before you can even apply to buy one and that application is reviewed and has to be accepted by Patek, often by Stern himself. So most people can't buy them at list and they rarely come on the market. If they do it's at large premiums.

Patek are the best in the industry at knowing the client base. They make certain watches it's impossible to buy no matter how rich you are. That kind of exclusivity other brands would kill for.

The current Nautilus craze and to a less extent the Aquanaut too is being driven by people who have never bought a Patek before and aren't their usual customer - and flippers of course. As far as Patek is concerned they always think very long term and likely just see the sport watch craze as a fad. They'll still be selling high-end precious metal complications to the ultra rich 20 years from now.

So from a purely commercial view I had to pay $2k more to get a completely solid gold version. Seemed like a no brainer to me. Also from seeing it in person and wearing it on the wrist the R is simply superior. I didn't regret my choice then and I certainly don't regret my choice now.

Like the other guy said, they're independent and that's considered a very good thing.
Richemont, Swatch, LVMH etc., are umbrellas that own a bunch of shit.
Means that there's a lot of sharing around of internals and expertise and though you'd think that was a good thing in theory, it ends up meaning that your panerai, or vacheron, montblanc or whatever may just be a label slapped onto a watch when all the design or engineering came from a different brand in the family (richemont does this), or you're just buying actual shitters like tag (lvmh's case) or buying stuff where whole bracelets or even integral internal components are made in some cheapo third world country (like with swatch who have factories all over the world). Rolex and patek only have their swiss factories and that's it. Can you trust a conglomerate not to take advantage of the fact that they access to cheaper labour if they had the option?

Independents like rolex and patek are not subject to the fickle whims of private equity like the shareholder appeasing aforementioned conglomerates; they think in lineage, not stock price. Long term, not short term (at least in theory). This lends them a sort of long term , assurance which is at odds with the more cutthroat pragmatism of your average publicly traded company. Collectors know this, hence why those two brands stand above the rest in terms of value even if there exist other brands that may or may not surpass them horologically or aesthetically.

If patek had been bought by one of the big names that coalesced around the time that the swiss were getting their shit back together, they would not have the same standing that they do today.

If all of a sudden Stern decided to sell off somehow to swatch or richemont or whatever then I believe that patek's standing and value on the 2nd hand market would definitely drop.

Independence is its own mark of prestige.
Patek, Audemars, Rolex. Three swiss privates that anybody gives a shit about.

WATCHES I'VE SEEN ON PEOPLE SINCE I GAINED THE ABILITY TO RECOGNIZE BRANDS

ubiquitous quartz casio/citizen

What did you expect? Considering that Patek only make 50000 watches a year, AP 40000, Lange 5000 watches a year, FPJ 800 and so on. So the number of "good" watches in circulation is low and the people that buy them are not usually walking around with them it's never going to be common to see one irl.

I personally see many Rolex though.

Yes. It is the power of marketing. Case in point: this entire meme board lol. All kidding aside it's really weird when you catch yourself being memed into liking something because of marketing. Tastes change over time no dobt about it, but I think constant exposure to media has eroded our sense of self and it is harder for us to see what we as a person like or want to do. Very harmful to western cultures I think.

I don't think his workshop churns out many watches a year.
I would like to see on with my own eyes one day.
Dufour most likely outdoes Smith finishing wise, but what intrigues me about Smith is that, being Daniel's protege, his watches use the Co-Axial in its pure, unadulterated form unlike that McMovement omega ended up cobbling together for their co-axials.
