I'm a zoomer with about $8,000 saved up. I own a couple of baaaasedkos (sarb033, alpinist, flightmaster, skx) and I want to change up my collection a bit. I want one luxury piece so I can sell my baasedkos. What do you guys recommend as an entry level zoomer tier luxury watch?

Literally no one wants to just stare at stock photos of rolex we have all seen 1,000 times. High end is fun when you have so much money that you can buy crazy shit, a large scope of selection. None of us have that kind of money, so when you see a luxury collection from here it is only going to be reasonable boring ass redundant choices, if you knew the guy irl it would be cool to look at them, but we don't, so they aren't that exciting to look at, we all know what a sub/motm looks like. Variation is interesting, that is low end, that is what this used to be on /g/ and why it's so fucking dead now.

The future of /wt/ will be shitters and you will shut up about it, getting back to what we actually own and not larping as country club boomers (bill posting is fine though)

The seiko ebson corporation owns them (seiko itself I think is separate from the conglomerate, but obviously they are owned by them). While alba is a line from seiko, orient is run and operated separately. I think there are a few orient that might have borrowed the seiko quartz VK movement for chronos but thats about the extent of it.

So in reality there is just the seiko epson corporation and citizen, but orient is the 3rd biggest name in japanese mechanicals (with history before getting acquired). If anything at all I wish seiko would force orient to have unified marketing across all countries, the way orient does it is fucking horrible where orient USA is different then orient zimbabwem, it doesn't pay off. Hey watchniggers. So I brought my old ass Glycine to the watchmaker in march and he still hasn't been able to find a new mainspring for it. The watch is from the 40's, maybe 50's. He's and old guy and it wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't use the internet, this just seems like a long time to me. I understand that finding parts is getting harder and harder, but I'm not a technical guy, I just like to stare at how pretty my watches are. Any thoughts/advice? Was thinking about seeing him and taking some pics of the movement (don't have any) and try to find a mainspring myself through internet and social media.

I like gold plated Soviet watches because they were a reflection of the society as a whole - when times were good in the 60's they had Au 20 (20 microns) of gold plating, then as the economy got worse over the years it went to Au 10, then 5, then barely anything towards the end.

There's nothing wrong with that GS. It's a good watch with well above average finishing and accuracy. If that's what you want then go for it.

But for a first serious watch you may be surprised at the servicing costs/logistics and poor resale value. For that kind of money there are fuck loads of great vintage dress watches you could buy (if you don't mind the smaller sizing)

At the haute horology level, "fit and finish" is valid, because there's actual handcrafting and craftsmanship involved.

At the lower levels it's a joke. Program a CNC machining center to put some chamfers in or hobnailing on a bezel and watch reviewers go nuts for it. The difference between good and great finishing is just a few more operations on a mill, not some extraordinary Swiss craftsmanship that justifies 10x the price.

>I like gold plated Soviet watches because they were a reflection of the society as a whole - when times were good in the 60's they had Au 20 (20 microns) of gold plating, then as the economy got worse over the years it went to Au 10, then 5, then barely anything towards the end.
Same goes for movements. Till the mid to late 60's Soviet movements were more uniform (most factories produced variants of basically the same 26mm movement), but had Breguet hairsprings, balance screws and "Geneva" stripes. Then the next generation of movements in the 70's were more advanced, but less fancy. Then again in the 80's, the Vostok, Raketa and Poljot movements at the time are kinda barebones. Low part count, low complexity, not many functions, but other than that still had proper build quality.

Than in the 90's it all went to shit. Vostok movements from the 90's to now can be dated on how progressively uglier they got.

The German fags in white coats assemble and QC the movement, but making all the parts is done by CNC. There was a good thread on WUS about the differences between high volume luxury brands like Rolex and haute horology like VC, Patek etc when it comes to manufacturing and hand finishing: https://forums.watchuseek.com/f2/quality-machine-vs-hand-made-movements-827597.html#post6052071

Basically, cheap watch movements are made with minimal decoration and that so that everything fits together adequately.

Higher end movements are decorated more (more CNC operations per part = more time = more expensive) and have better QC so that parts fit together well. The machines make a bunch of parts, then people go and pick the ones that fit together best (as all have slightly different tolerances).

At the highest levels the parts are hand finished to fit together perfectly, and there may be other hand carved decoration as well.

Considering how expensive a watchmaker's time is, they won't be sitting there hand carving decorations unless it's a really high end watch.
