I owned one for over two years, but my love for the watch was always lukewarm. Once again, the watch is high quality, but the dial design was too generic for my tastes. The indices and hands just reminded me of Nixon. I always felt like I was wearing a very high quality Nixon. Bleh

I keep thinking that the watch dial is too cluttered with text, and the Rolex text on the inside of the bezel is too cluttered, maybe even a bit tacky, but on wrist shots it doesn't look that apparent. What is your take on it? Is it more a thing where the joy of owning one overshadows it, or am I just overly worried about it for no good reason?
Definitely gonna see about trying one on when next time I go into the city.

The text on the dial has always been a part of the Rolex aesthetic. It was just a way to list specs/trademarks back when they were actually tool watches. Collectors go crazy over all the different dial variations and differences in the text are a part of that. Even the modern hulk has 4 dial variations.

how much do you think choice of watch or brand of watch should reflect lifestyle?

Owning a Rolex makes you look like a nouveau riche nigger no matter what. Besides unless you're genuinely a filthy richfag nobody is going to believe it's an original. I think most people with normal office jobs are better off with actual shitters as long as they look good (stuff like DW or Skagen or whatever). I've literally heard my colleague getting complimented for a piece of shit DW that costed less than 100€ on Amazon.

I honestly don't like those so I usually wear mid tier horology brands, I personally love Tissot and Seiko the most because they're good brands with high reputation among normies and lots of heritage and high quality especially in the 500€+ range. If you're in an executive position you can go to high end brands like Omega. I would avoid haute horologerie unless you're an actual richfag, but then again when you're that rich it doesn't really matter. I am not an executive but I hope to buy an Omega DeVille sooner or later.

Anyway avoid smart watches, fitbits, and shit like that, it makes you look like a fucking tool and a social media addicted faggot. Those are never ever acceptable.

I've never bought a watch purely to make money on it. If I was I'd never have bought any brand new Vacheron or Lange's since they lose 20% the instant you slap them on your wrist.

There is only one watch that is 100% guaranteed to make you money (eventually) and that would be any kind of Patek Perpetual Calendar. Slightly over your 30k budget though. Buying watches as an investment is *incredibly hard* to do successfully. All I've done is buy second hand watches I personally like *and* that I think are at a great price.

For example that yellow gold Royal Oak. A solid YG watch was the last thing I ever though I'd wear but I saw it in a local AD's window and it 'popped'. I was curious, went inside and tried it on. Fell in love with it instantly and the AP built quality and finishing is stunning. The AD said "It's sat in my window for months. Even though it's an unworn brand new model RO no one wants yellow gold any more which is why I'm giving 25% off retail price". For that kind of deal I took it. 12 months later that watch is impossible to obtain and demand for it is nuts. Grey market prices is at least 33% over MSRP last time I checked. That's over $15k profit already and I suspect it'll only go up.

So tl'dr simply buy what you like and would wear daily. If you buy at good brand at a good price you can't really go wrong so start off looking at pre-owned / second hand. There is only one watch I've ever bought that was over the MSRP.

---

If you want some /biz/ level advice then some watches I think could do well in the future then the white dial + orange hand Milgauss and Explorer II. I can certainly see those watches being in high demand in the future. Personally not my thing though.

The 154000ST blue dial Royal Oak - boutique only edition. Think I paid $4k over list for it. It was a watch I always wanted and I still thought the price was good. On the grey market it now goes for $10-12k over list price since that model is no longer produced.

I had the Calibre 400 but they all have issues, rolex made it more simple for a reason. People recommend it all the time but they never owned one. It's a nice watch, it is quite iconic, looks great, the only guy I even heard talk about the issues i and many have is a watchmaker with watchbox.
