While subtractive notation for multiples of 4 (IV, XL and CD) has been the usual form since Roman times, additive notation (IIII, XXXX,[11] and CCCC[11]) continued to be used, including in compound numbers like XXIIII,[12] LXXIIII,[13] and CCCCLXXXX.[14] The additive forms for 9, 90, and 900 (VIIII,[11]LXXXX,[15] and DCCCC[16]) have also been used, although less frequently.

The two conventions could be mixed in the same document or inscription, even in the same numeral. On the numbered gates to the Colosseum, for instance, IIII is systematically used instead of IV, but subtractive notation is used for other digits; so that gate 44 is labelled XLIIII.[17] Isaac Asimov speculates that the use of IV, as the initial letters of "IVPITER" (a classical Latin spelling of the name of the Roman god Jupiter) may have been felt to have been impious in this context.[18]

Modern clock faces that use Roman numerals still usually employ IIII for four o'clock but IX for nine o'clock, a practice that goes back to very early clocks such as the Wells Cathedral clock of the late 14th century.[19][20][21] However, this is far from universal: for example, the clock on the Palace of Westminster tower, "Big Ben", uses a subtractive IV for 4 o'clock.[20]

What should I know about buying a watch from an AD?

I've only ever bought online but I'm buying a shitter that's approx $6000 and fakes of it are rife so I'm wanting to go AD. I've been told by the AD they wont do a discount unless I buy the one from the store that everyone's had their grubby hands on, should I be worried about buying a "new" watch that's basically ex display?

Also how autistic is it to go around multiple ADs until you find a watch with perfect QC? I've noticed even on $5000+ watches they sometimes have a small nick in one of the hands or imperfect printing in the numbers of the ceramic bezel. Is it even more autistic to request goodies to go along with my purchase like accessories related to the brand (gloves, a pouch)?

Absolutely not. You get the discount because it's been unboxed, stickers removed and as you say worn by others but apart from that it's still classed as new.

> Also how autistic is it to go around multiple ADs until you find a watch with perfect QC?
Not autistic at all. In fact you should expect perfect QC. One of the benefits of an AD is that even if you buy it, take it home and then spot a fault you still have the return window to take it back and swap it or get a refund.

> Is it even more autistic to request goodies to go along with my purchase
It's not autistic but it may be classed as rude depending on how you broach the subject. Depending on the brand you'll always get some extra gifts when buying from an AD but you could try asking for catalogues or loupes etc to start with and see how it goes.

But I assume it's as accurate as the Mark II remake is to the original.

That is outrageous. The only brands this might apply to would be Rolex and Patek. You should always try and get a discount if you’re buying from an AD because you could always go grey market and probably save a lot more. Smart ADs know this and will try and compete on price as much as they can.
>Also how autistic is it to go around multiple ADs until you find a watch with perfect QC?
It’s not autistic, you’re the one about to spend a decent chunk of change on a watch. If perfection is important to you, then you should find a perfect example.
>Is it even more autistic to request goodies to go along with my purchase like accessories related to the brand (gloves, a pouch)?
This is a little autistic. Most boutiques will throw in some extras when you’re buying something expensive like a high quality book.

They have phenomenal movements in basically an SKX case. And I suppose since they're Jap divers a lot of them were abused and wrecked over the years.

I mean, sure the 7A28 chronographs are amazing, but the 75XX series quartz movements are phenomenal on their own and are the basis for the modern 7C46 you see in the Marinemaster tunas.

Are Ziiiro watches effay? Their displays are meant to resemble sundials and look fairly futuristic but not techy like Casios or Seikos.

This one's digital with a glowing display.

Depends what else is in the collection. Also what look you're going for. The bigger one makes it feel more sporty and an all rounder. I went with the medium one and it suits my 6 inch wrist. I tried in both and they would both be alright. I just have other large watches so went with medium.

If I were you I'd go large. Even with my small wrists. Many people irl tell me my medium looks small. I guess people are just so used to large watches irl.

Just put in an order for the Ploprof (black dial, mesh band) Master Chronometer from an AD, it's to be my first proper expensive timepiece, and second mechanical timepiece (first is a Helson Sharkmaster 300 no date). Though I'll gladly admit that it's the uniqueness of it that attracted me to it rather than anything else, so if anyone has ideas of what to wear it with other than a drysuit, it'd be most welcome.
Pic peripherally related, it's also a watch.
