I don't see any "outwards" purpose in wearing a (fine) watch at all. To me it's purely a psychological pick-me-up, something that reminds me of my accomplishments sometimes, when I'm having a less than spectacular day.

Okay, one in a thousand people might recognize my watch and say something nice about it (which weirdly tends to happen more with affordable Seiko divers than with more expensive swiss watches), but it happens so rarely, that I can't rely on that feeling to justify my watch hobby. So I justify it with the sensations I personally get from owning and wearing a nice watch. And those are intimately tied to things like heritage/history, some cool guy wearing the same watch in a movie, or on the fucking moon or something, fine craftsmanship, technological innovation, iconic advances in design philosophy, and altogether beauty and pride of ownership.

With a replica I might get that one guy out of a thousand social interactions to compliment my watch, or they might recognize it's a fake, and in either case I would have the same sinking feeling of being a fraud. I would get none of the personal sensations I get from owning a fine watch. Just more self-hate and disappointment.

I don't write this to judge you. If you don't see watches like this, then mlre power to you, just move on and save yourself a few thousand. There's plenty of other hobbies. But replicas are basically just garbage, with no purpose whatsoever. If you have no morals and just want to look cool, invest your replica money in some Amazon stock or whatever.
