It works in that context because the luxury of the materials complements the luxury of the boots even if the clothes themselves don't match in formality. Full disclosure- I feel a visceral repulsion to all of your fits, but it looks like you're making an effort here so I'll bite. While it makes intuitive sense that white and grey, being neutrals, should work with the overshirt, the combination of the two does not. The overshirt is already the dominant focus, but it works with the tee because the latter is plain and together they balance out. Once you add the grey of the pants though- a shade that not only doesn’t appear anywhere else in the fit, but that clashes like hot garbage against the red, you’ve added two additional points of contrast to a fit that was already at max. Now the overshirt/pants and pants/tee are competing for attention with the overshirt/tee combo in a way that confuses the eye and muddies what you’re trying to achieve.

In short, get black trousers.
