I had the day off, and it was such beautiful weather that I decided to take advantage of it by visiting my buddy who still wrenches on aircraft. We drove around the airport and chatted with some fellow old greasemonkeys. We were going to fly around but other events cancelled that. Regardless, it was a fun way to spend the day. I don't want to make it obvious. The best method I know is to cross my arms, so the face of the watch is directly facing the plebian in front of me. If I feel like stroking my chin, I'll purposely do it with my left hand to make the watch more apparent.

I don't understand it myself. Fortis was around for a while, and eventually got involved with the Russian Space program. Their aesthetics in general are 'cool' tool watches, but using standard ETA/Valjoux/Lemania movements.

As for Sinn and the others, they got involved when the market for mid or low-mid tier mechanical watches was growing. Consider that for some time it was only Omega, Tag, and Oris. Not much to choose from, so why not have an extra company here and there providing a different look but the same basic engine inside.

Now the market has started to contract, probably for the last time in history, so now these brands are not only irrelevant but they'll begin to disappear as quickly as microbreweries will.

It's a strange thing, actually, watching how this is all unfolding. The main demographics who have money for this shit is now the Arabs, the Russians, and the Chinese. The average person, if they are saving for a 'luxury' watch, isn't going to go with a smaller brand because it's going to be their one and only watch. That being said, the Chinese don't buy except for the name and status, the Arabs only go for visible wealth, and the Russians...well, they go for anything really at this point.

So I don't know...but as Fortis was bought out last year I think, I'd say if you want to buy any of these watches from these brands, do so now because who knows if they'll be around in 5 years from now.

This poster isn't wrong, but I've had good success getting used ones over eBay with decent alignment and excellent accuracy. Many listings accept returns, and eBay covers you if an item isn't as advertised. Also, putting in a sapphire is not that hard if you're careful, and the result looks great. It's not reasonable to have to go though that fuss, but it'll get you a great watch for below $300, which I don't know many other examples of. Most things below that price look worse if you want to stick to automatics.

Why, why do you want a fucking skx this badly? I don't understand why seiko fags lust after them this much. No great watches under $300? What are you talking about? You can get a million microbrands with a miyota 9015 or NH35 in them with sapphire, or less obvious models from orient/citizen that have sapphire, or hell, even staying with seiko but not buying an skx, what is wrong with you? I've seen an skx in macys, was not blown away, is there an easy free mod where it sucks your dick that I don't know about? I can't imagine liking watches enough to be on a thread like this, but retarded enough to spend around 150-200 on an skx knowing the specs (and risk) and then on top of it spending EVEN MORE money to mod it

I actually really love these designs but the brands online presence and even info on them seems really difficult to come by imo. From what I've seen on chrono24 and a few random listings they are more expensive then I thought they'd be, I would of expected a wacky clownhouse brand like this to drop like bricks on the 2nd hand market

>> No.14510819

Orient and Citizen produce mainly bland crap. Seikos are better overall in design, though probably equivalent in accuracy. Microbrands are interesting but there's a ton of shit there too. Because Seiko produces so much, it's pretty easy to identify good ones on the used market, since so many are out there. For the same reason, there's lots of resources out there for modding which is really not that expensive and an interesting thing to try. None of this is actually that complicated and it's a fun entry point into a hobby that's not otherwise very accessible since the stuff that is really good is all at least four figures.

Furthermore, the offerings that were there were not interesting, horologically special or other, and what it seemed like was that the companies were not particularly interested in showcasing their wares to potential individual customers and were rather waiting until the distributor/dealer only watch gathering that happens a little later in the year (can't remember the name of it...it's an acronym like IHSS or something like this). In my view it all points to a 'quartz crisis' situation like they had in the 70's, where the manufacturers all had to band together for survival. The signs are the same, but the cause is entirely different now. Mechanical watches as a luxury item are no longer relevant in society, because now the luxury items are high technology (the newest phone, computer, etc.).

I remember Silberstein from my times in the UK, when he was big; you could see a few of his 'creations' in Harrods in the watch department next to Corum (I don't know if they still carry Silberstein). I honestly hate his designs...every single one of them. It's kitsch and low-brow and awful, just awful in person and on the wrist. The kind of watch a New York socialite would wear to the Guggenheim for the latest exhibition. In the 1980s. They're expensive because they're supposed to be 'haute couture' for the wrist, and when I briefly looked into them they were using standard ETA/Valjoux movements like everyone else. Sorry to be so negative about his stuff...but god is it fucking terrible in person to see these things after you see a Lange or a Vacheron Constantin...

I don't think seikos are better overall in design at all, the last cool watches they had with bang for buck were the sarbs, those were it, maybe the monsters when they were cheap. But taste aside the actual watch is objectively terrible for the money. You are arguing that seiko on the dial is worth the horrible everything (except lume and I guess the steel case it's in) over everything else. A mako or ray is better, a promaster is better, and any microbrand with close ties to chinese factories absolutely kills the skx in specs (Phoibos I have experience with, dagaz off the top of my head, and then probably half the brands on channels like one more watch or whatever random rob is sent)

No I mean, I believe you, that is pretty much the only reason I could see them being that much since its 100% design and then a normal ETA. Shame they are not normally priced watches for what they are with crazy designs. Part of the reason I'm happy with my large sub $500 poorfag collection is that there is so much dead fucking space between $500 and just a rolex. The only watch I really like between an oceanus and an explorer 2 is a sinn 104, but I've seen too much bullshit regarding their quality control, not going to fuck around with it or give them any chance when they are going to charge over a ground and proudly put "made in germany" on the dial.

Agreed, but it is the way it is nevertheless. Because of the built-in obsolescence and the ever quickening pace of IT development, the latest phones are only good for 2 years, the latest computers for 4, etc. That being said, you need the latest computers soft and hardware to run the latest games, you need the latest phones to keep up with the latest apps, etc. Mechanical watches are completely foreign as an entity to all of this; the developments happen over decades, not months, and with servicing you can wear the same watch like my Dad has since 1966 and it's as good if not better than the modern namesake (we both wear Seamasters). It's stupid really, if you think about the whole thing. In the 60's, every man needed a watch, and all watches were mechanical. Today, every man needs a phone and a computer, and both of those tell time more accurately than any mechanical watch.

Anyone who's seen my long drunken rants before knows how I feel about this, but I think I've just accepted it as the way things are. I love watches for what they represent, but I understand why they are in the position they're in with regards to society, disposable income, wealth and status, etc.

Well, I'd put it this way regarding the Sinn. If you want it, find a dealer, try it on, see how it is on the wrist, and find out what kind of warranty and stuff you'd have on the piece if you bought it. That's really the only way that you'll know if you want to save up for one or not to bother. You'd be surprised at how quickly one's opinions can change on a watch when you strap it on for the first time.

Case in point: a year ago I changed jobs and my income was far larger than it had been before. Thus, I decided to start going into watch shops to try on watches I'd never dared think about before but were now within the realm of possibility. All were disappointing except the Rolex Day-Date, which is glorious in person and on the wrist. The most disappointing was a surprise to me: the JLC Reverso. I hated it. It looks amazing in pics, but on the wrist it feels like cheap plastic, and the finishing isn't impressive in the least. I remember leaving the boutiques feeling rather sad at all of it...because the illusion was destroyed. I don't know, maybe I need to try one on in gold or something heavier like platinum...but it still looks and feels wrong in my eyes.

When I tried on the Speedmaster for the first time, it felt right, it looked right, and it sang. Silly, corny, but true. So that's how I knew I'd want to save up for one. Pretty simple.

That's exactly why I think it's ass-backwards, it's something that you can buy that's not a part of the retarded rat race upgrade cycle, so it seems like a much more sensible thing to do.

Also, do people really buy all that new electronic shit, I only buy one computer every 8 years or so, and that's it, why would you need anything more than that? Especially now that there aren't any massive leaps forward anymore.

Well, you're lucky. Laptops, which I need for work, are pegged at 2-years or 2.5 years depending on the company; if they work more than that, it's considered a miracle. Granted, I've only had one laptop break down (the Dell), and that was after 3 years, but the tech inside is still not something you can easily switch out (unlike a tower). As for phones, you see this in the business model of most cell-phone providers; they do plans that 'include' a cell-phone, with options for upgrading it after a year or two. These things are disposable.

Mechanical watches, in the traditional sense, are not supposed to be disposable. So, you're right that it's ass-backwards, but it's also something that companies hate providing. Why would you create something perfect so that a customer only has to buy it once, when you can build something that has enough flaws that the customer comes back to you every few years to upgrade? For a long time, the luxury watch market was hell-bent on selling people watches 'for their collection' (i.e. the owner has more than one watch because they like them and want to collect them, like Pokemon cards). With high end companies (Patek, Lange, etc.) they still do this, only subtly; for instance, for you to be eligible to buy their rarest releases, you have to have already purchased several watches from them beforehand.

No, it's all just a way to get people to spend money, like any business. It's sad, but it's true, and that's why I kinda feel bad about saying such terrible things about Silberstein's aesthetic. At this stage of life, if someone likes a watch, then why the hell shouldn't they buy it? If they're informed about all the pitfalls and problems, and they still want to go through with it, then as long as it makes them happy when they look at their wrist, I support it.

Questionable, I think you can better spend the money choosing your own watch(es).

1) You can’t choose or return the pieces (though you can S/T through their FB group) some people get crap and miss out on better pieces because of this

2) The whole concept of “guaranteed more than retail” relies on some weird benchmarking (e.g., in some cases the “retail” they compare to is a single-seller product on Amazon)

Baselworld is expensive to show at. All physical shows are declining because of the internet. Mechanical watches are still relevant luxury items. Also there are contrarian trends; paper book sales rising while ebooks decline, persistence of vinyl records.

Arguably the smartphone "look what I've got" craze peaked around 2010-2015, since improvements are more gradual.

Yes they will never go away. For the same reason as people don't wear Nikes to funerals, collect paintings or go for walks in the wilderness, humans place a value on beauty and craft, it's not all about the most practical & efficient option. If someone has a suit tailor made they don't want perfectly straight stitching. Every god damn tailor on the face of the earth is using a stitching machine. But there is something beautiful and unique about craftsmanship, it turns objects into pieces of art, that speak to us through their inherent human imperfections. Just like you can pick up a book from 2000 years ago and have a conservation with its author that transcends time, you can get that same sensation when sitting on a 3000 thousand year old Egyptian chair and break it.
