Clothes ;

Jeans hanging off my hips, long sleeve scruffy t-shirt, spikey hair, pair of Timberland workman boots (just normal regular comfy clothes)

Venue ;

Upper Class High Street Jewellers (UK) were they have a guy on the door that sizes you up before he decides to buzz the electro lock and open the door for you. (eg. Mappin&Webb, David M.Robinson)

"Can I help you young man?" - I'm 37yrs old, look young for my age. "Yes old fella," I reply, "can I have a closer look at the Breitling SA BS?"

He looks at me in disgust as if I am a piece of sh*t...!! He gingerly goes to the locked glass window display to get the watch. He asks me to take a seat at one of the viewing desks - the one furthest away from the door. This is going to be fun, I think to myself.

I look at the watch on the desk without touching it and he goes thru the his sales talk. I take off my B1 hidden under my sleeve and try it on. "Ah...Breitling B1 SIR..." a very nice watch indeed.

His snooty-ness disappears. I wasn't impressed with his manner so I walk away. I end up going to mainstream jewellers (namely Goldsmiths) where I was pounced on straight away by an eager sales person and very polite. I even got a discount be it only £100 but it was a limited piece after all

Continual issues with my partner... With my wife, who is intensely pragmatic, she sees my watch collecting (hoarding) habit as an excessive pursuit with no real purpose. She buys very cheap fashion watches, only considers them a timekeeping convenience and throws them away when the battery runs out. She really has no hobbies and her idle time is largely spent watching the Hallmark channel or reading romance novels. We've been through many cycles dealing with my seeking and purchasing watches. There was a period when she was upset with the expense even though money is not a problem with us. So she said I could buy whatever watch I wanted as long as it was "inexpensive" - with a not well defined $$$ limit. So that year I bought five "inexpensive" watches and she doesn't realize that the cost added up to more than what I might have paid for one "expensive" watch. Then, the criteria shifted to it could be a higher end watch but it has to be a "great deal" - That's how I got my Breitling when Costco discounted it almost $3K! Now lately, watches have to be unique and she has to look at the image to pronounce that it's unique. I'm not always sure what "unique" means to her, it might mean not like any other watch I already have or maybe unique appearance in the entire realm of watches - but she makes a judgement. Occasionally, I can sneak in a very inexpensive watch like my retro style William L. quartz chrono I snagged on eBay for $29. Sometimes I get lucky and when she has wanted to purchase something expensive and might be a little guilty about it, she'll vaguely mention that perhaps I should look at watches online. That happened recently when we went sort of overboard buying a shiny new automated expresso machine with all the buttons, bells & whistles. So then I got my latest Junghans Meister Telemeter automatic!

For xmas, my wife ordered me a Maurice Lacroix World Timer thinking it was a sharp watch and would be useful for my many business trips. There were issues w/ delivery and she felt she was getting the run a round from the UK merchant, thus ultimately she's cancelled the order. I also showed her it could be purchased for literally 1k less elsewhere due to GBP-> Euro currency valuations.

I consider myself a very lucky guy that she wanted to get me a nice watch, but it's very busy/colorful and honestly I'm just not in love with it...or at least the pics as i haven't seen it in person given it's not available at the two local AD's. At 3500 euro, i feel It's too expensive to keep if it's not something I'm really attracted to and all I've been doing is trying to talk myself into liking it.

I'm certainly aware of ML, but I've never paid much attention and am unfamiliar w/ the brand in terms of quality, longevity, timelessness etc. My homework says it's fine, but i just don't know if I'll feel proud with it on my wrist like I do my blue faced Omega AT or even my Hublot all black Classic Fusion. Both simple, yet sharp. Given it hasn't arrived and she's now cancelled it, i told her i'm not sure it's the one for me...she was disappointed and responded with "i should have known not to get you a watch".I figured I could pick something else out w/ GMT functionality, but she wanted to get something special for me that she had picked out, so she's basically said "fine,whatever...just go buy yourself a watch". It's put a bit of a damper on things :)

First, am i being a jerk and have others been in this position? I feel guilty to the point where maybe I should give it a try. Is my inferiority complex w/ the ML brand silly? Am I wrong to desire something like a Speedmaster Broad Arrow (GMT) instead? or even ditch the GMT for now and go for a Speedmaster Pro... Something w/ a bit more classic appeal.

I guess these are my questions, but it's also therapeutic even just writing this :)

My wife has mentioned repeatedly that she would like a new watch, something dressier and nicer than the Quartz Hamilton Khaki ladies she's been wearing for the last 10 years. So I for Christmas I bought her a 33mm Nomos Orion. It's stunning, and fits her perfectly, and she loves it. But she's making me send it back.
She says she'd feel guilty wearing a watch that nice. And she'd rather give the money to charity.
I'm all about some charity, but really? The watch was $2200. We spend close to that at Whole Foods in six weeks. She has an iMac that cost that much that she only utilizes to about 12% of its capacity.
I told her I didn't think that the watch was really that expensive considering she'd have it the rest of her life, and could pass it on to our children or grandchildren, much better than she could an iMac, but that didn't gain traction.
Too bad. It looked so sexy on her wrist.
I guess I was trying too hard to show her how cool watches can be. She doesn't get it. She actually researched Nomos, and thinks it's an awesome company, and she thinks it's the perfect watch. She'd just rather I throw $400 away on a Marc Jacobs and call it a day.

As a wealthy executive, I work with other wealthy executives and we all completely notice each others wristwatches, about 12 of us, it's quite a show. Wear the wrong watch or the wrong strap with the wrong shoes and it does not reflect kindly.

I love it when people notice my watches, and the only watches any man on the street ever notices is a Rolex. So my collection is exclusively Rolex. And I do not attempt to conceal my Rolexes, I cuff up my sleeves even in the dead of winter or wear loose jackets that allow my Rolexes to be seen on commuter trains, coffee shops, you name it. It makes me feel good about myself when others treat me with such reverence.

The reason we spend so much money on Rolex watches is because they are instantly recognized, so to run away from said recognition is an affront to the brand, or, at the very least, demonstrating an unusual misunderstanding of its benefits.

For those that have even heard of G-shock (or could recognize one), I suspect their perception is that they are bulky, ugly, dated-looking (digital), cheap, hunks of plastic/rubber for A) boys, and B) men who still think they are A)

I would largely agree with that description.

A close friend of mine was shopping for a watch for her boyfriend last year, and she asked me for her advice. I took off my Rolex and handed it to her, and she said, "Whoa, you wear a Rolex?" I mean, I'd been wearing one every day for the past 7 years, and even my close friend didn't realize that my DJ, Sub and Exp II were actually Rolex watches. I live in a neighborhood of doctors and lawyers, and nearly all of them wear smartwatches, if anything, and I'd wager they'd all be surprised if they realized my watches were Rolex/Tudor/Omega.

Whatcha wanna bet that if you were wearing your Tudor or Omega, she wouldn't have said, "Whoa"?

She may have never thought to look closely at your watches before, but she recognized the Rolex brand for sure once she paid attention. I'm not so sure she would have realized that the others would be in the same price tier.

>Why predetermined watch brands? Because I needed to ensure the context was correct. I thought about a lot of different watch brand names but just because “omega” appears in a rapper’s lyrics doesn’t mean he’s talking about watches (e.g. Rakim’s “No Omega”). It is quite possible that rappers do talk about that watch brand, but I can never be sure without using my own eyes to scan the lyrics for context, and that’s inefficient when you need to process an entire discography. But like I said, I know hip-hop music, and Omega doesn’t carry any caché with that community. There might be one or two references, but it’s going to be more noise than signal. Frankly, Omega just isn’t baller.

What does wearing a ROLEX do for you?

Let me share with you all, what wearing a ROLEX does for me.

When I put it on my left wrist, I take my time, almost like a ritual.

Why?... Because I know that that's the way the good men and women at

ROLEX S.A use and do to make every ROLEX watch.

Treat it as you like, but do it with honor and respect.

Don't use it to impress anyone but yourself.

They say it takes a whole year to make a watch at ROLEX S.A, if it's true

or not, I don't care, all I care it's the end result on my wrist and the felling

of acomplishment and discern that owning a ROLEX gives to me.

What does wearing a ROLEX do for you?

As I previously mentioned, in house doesn't mean shit. I dont care if the watch maker was confident if the product they made has poor accuracy or susceptibility to fucking up. I had an SKX once, the movement was overly fast and would get stuck and stop the time, only to be fixed with a very hard knock to dislodge whatever it was. I'd take a separately made movement that's actually good before an in house piece of garbage like the 7S26 and it's many variants.

I would have to agree with you. When I visited the AD (The only time I've decided to buy from one, I'm checking in my retard pass) the only version in stock was the 41mm, although I originally came to see the 36mm. I tried on the 41 and figured the fit was almost just right, and the 36 would have been a bit small for me. I'm just glad I left with a new favorite piece at a pretty significant price reduction, since I was able to overlap a lack of state tax with a generous seasonal discount by delaying the purchase and having it mailed to me (I live in a separate state from that AD). All things considered, it was pretty enjoyable and rather special, considering I saved while working a high school job to buy it a short while before graduation.

VINTAGE BULOVA. No, seriously though. You can find countless 1930s+ hand wind Bulova pieces on ebay at very nice prices. I love them because of how ornate they are as dress pieces, since my preferences tend to lean towards designs like that as opposed to the typical german minimalism. If that's still too much, look at timex. Cheap, mass produced, and built to last long enough for fuckheads like us to buy them on ebay. There isn't. Why don't you just get a Bund? And if you really want it that bad, why don't you go for the Sinn? People here seem to have put Sinn in the list of needless hate, but there really isn't much to complain about with Sinn. It would be different if the topic was tag, because they're destroying everything the Heuer name built. As far as lookalikes go, your best option is probably the Sinn, as it will offer a higher quality standard than cheaper copies and replicas. Companies with higher pedigree than Heuer most likely wouldn't stoop so low as to try to steal their design.

Most Zenith watches are ugly enough to warrant copying another design. Also, they aren't that great, especially considering their latest release of the machine crafted movement with extreme precision, that was met by enthusiasts with an astounding lack of excitement because they missed the point of a hand made and hand crafted watch, where accuracy is expected to a certain degree, but comes in a close second to the artisanal nature of watchmaking as a whole.

Yeah it's sad to see Zenith take it in that direction. I can't take another skeleton watch, they're really trying to push them. So much so that their recent chronograph releases have had more skeletons hitting the market than actually tasteful designs, like the panda they released alongside it. It's either a poor attempt at style or brand definition or they're pulling a Richard Mille and skeletonizing watches to prevent fakes, either way, I wish they would continue to innovate as they do, but stick closer to the classics than whatever it is they're doing at the moment.

I see a GM style catastrophe in swatch's future, wherein they either sell of the lower tier brands or just dissolve them entirely. What they really need to do is cut down the blancpain market to only divers, limit omega's production, slim down the variety of watches offered to make a more defined, recognizable collection, push their higher end pieces and focus more on creating them, and use the resources from the other sister swatch brands (gem setting, tourbillon, in house movement, in house tool factory, in house watchmaker training schools, etc) to better the omega brand as a whole so as to cut into a chunk of rolex's market. It's very possible to do, but with Tim Hayek in place, I fear he will just continue to devalue the Omega brand further.

>> No.14500941

Why do brands do it? For example, why can't I go into a TAG Heuer store, and get the 2019 model of the Heuer Bund, just like I can go into a Rolex store and get a Submariner, you know what I'm saying? Just have a few classic models that stay relatively the same over the years that are associated with the brand.

Like, if I walked into a TAG Heuer store and wanted a Carrera, I get all this mall shit too, similar to the Zenith's El Primero, there's no Carrera that just looks like a normal fucking watch anymore, and historically there was. The only thing that comes close to it is that retardedly overpriced Japanese gay faggot shit.

Unless they are brands that are specifically in collusion with Rolex and can't do that because market this market that blah blah of course.

Was considering a VC overseas in 37mm but i saw a few videos saying that it fit more like a 40mm. Cant really afford a PP nautilus. AP royal oak maybe but idk theres a lot of hype.

Shit i usually wear
Have full fits of CCP
Also have full fits of artisanal farmer shit like paul harnden, toogood, elenadawson, guidi, etc
wardrobe split in half rn between artisanal farmer and ccp
considering buying some milsurp

Any suggestions? Should I buy retail or used?

In Tag's case, it was very very poor management by the Tag half of the name. Watch companies are always at their best when maintaining the classic lines (while keeping them somewhat limited so as not to ruin the value) and putting out higher end pieces in extremely limited numbers to show the watch industry and enthusiasts that while they make regularly high quality timepieces, they are a force to be reckoned with in regard to the art of watchmaking entirely and an extremely respectable brand. It's sad that Tag has fallen in the Invicta trap. Great heritage with very respectable pieces, but a buyout from the wrong moron just fucks everything up and ruins the name forever. Did you know Tag released a Chinese made GPS smartwatch?? I completely lost all respect for them after that. I had been getting weary of them when the claims of bad craftsmanship, unreliable movements, and general overpricing were circulating, but that was the straw that broke the camel's back.

There are hundreds of them anon, just find a fun shitter, don't spend to much, don't expect lume that actually works, don't expect accuracy better than gaining losing a minute a day, ask as many questions as you can dare, the crystals will all be acrylic domed, so don't worry about scratches because you can just buy something called polywatch for 4 bucks that will polish out and make that shit look brand new
