14430628 No.14430628 [Reply] [Original]

Buying my first Suit for work. What should I be looking for? I got measured and am a 34/36 chest.

From what I've heard my best bet would be to buy a few from Asos, choose one I like and get it tailored to fit perfectly.

Any advice on what else to look for or if this is wrong?

>> No.14430667

Make sure the shoulders fit perfectly before you buy. Tailoring shoulders is extremely difficult, almost everything else you can get fixed.
First suit should be wool. Avoid weird blends. A couple percent of something else is alright, pure wool is better.
Go for navy or gray.
At least half-lined or full lined.
No patch pockets, ticket pockets, etc. Keep the first one simple.
Notch lapels.
2 buttons best, maybe 3, NOT 1 button.

ASOS provides cheap, shitty materials that will hardly last a season. Why bother tailoring anything from there? Save your money and get a decent suit from a store that specializes in suits.

>> No.14430684

Just go to your department store and search through the good brands. Don't buy shitty stuff from ASOS or other fast fashion brands - they look like shit. Look for ones from the mid-price fashion labels.

I'm only using Asos because they ship next day and I can buy a lot to try to and returning what I don't want is super simple.

I'm filtering out shitty brands, e.g the one in my OP is Moss Bros which I think is pretty decent for suits.

Suitsupply was decent for me, but expect to drop some money(though it's a suit so relative cost is average). I think I paid $700 for the whole suit and I needed to buy shoes and a belt elsewhere too so in total a mid level suit should run you $500-1200. Don't be a cheap poorfag and get a low quality fast fashion suit, pay a little more to make sure it looks decent at the very least.

Get something dark navy blue, flap pockets (if you want a jetted look you can tuck them in) two buttons (unless you are very tall then go for three), slim to medium lapel. Notch lapel or a smaller more conservative peak lapel (especially if it’s your style) me being way into classic menswear would recommend you get a matching vest with your suit so you have two outfits (vests are also good for weddings and funerals). Buy a suit in worsted wool. Remember to wear a pocket square, it always looks better and they’re in style.

I would wear this colour in summer only, and only occasionally. It is very casual. I tend to believe that navy and all that jazz is very new-agey, as in "iGent". Why don't you give the grey colours a spin? I found that I like the mid-grey and darker tones best.

Very disagreeable. 9 cm lapel is the most classic width. Large men tend to pick wider lapels. Smol men thinner, but then again, I would even recommend 9 cm for sub 170 cm men.

There's a tailor in my city that makes bespoke suits. I got one made for my wedding. I picked everything from the wool it's made of, the lining, buttons, style of pockets, vent, lapels, etc. It was actually overwhelming having so many options that you don't think of normally, like thread color. I was measured, fitted and everything and the total was just over 1000USD.
Planning on having another made soon for no reason other than they're so good for so cheap. Look for local tailors that have been there forever but aren't brand names. They're always way cheaper but are the best.

I need some help buying my first real suit. I've rented before, but never owned one.

I figure I'll buy one off the rack, have it properly tailored and use the measurements to have future suits custom made.

Are the JosA. Bank Signature Imperial blend suits decent?

https://www.josbank.com/signature-imperial-blend-tailored-fit-suit

They are pretty much the only decent suiting store around me because I live in a shit hole, they have deals every other month and they will tailor there.
When they have a buy one get two free sale I'd be getting three wool suits for 300 a piece, I could get one medium grey, one navy and one plaid/windowpane suit for a more casual look. Then I could have them tailored and have custom suits made using the measurements. I want to get a tux, tweed suit, double breasted suit, etc.

Why buy any of the shit we talk about here? Because I like how they look, my career is taking off and I have the opportunity to wear them way more often now and I have the money to do so.

2: I'm aware of the actual cost versus the quality, hence my plan. I'm fine with a basic grey wool suit for 300, then I can get that tailored and use the measurement for a custom suit. I'm not buying six suits at once, I'm planning on building a wardrobe over time. The only suiting options I have around here are JosA, Men's Wearhouse, Bananna Republic, and Nordstroms. Holy shit, he's asking what cut of suit would match what's in the image. Do you know what a cut of a suit is? Cus it doesn't mean "tight" or "loose" or have anything to do with the quality of material or whether or not it chases trends. Is your only experience with suits looking up Amazon shit? Did your father teach you nothing?
I guess I'll have to be your daddy. Notice the high arm holes, shorter sleeves, and tucked waist in the first image? That's Italian cut.
See how in the pic I posted the shoulders are more broad, the waist is more relaxed, and the arm holes are lower? This is called American cut. Again, THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH QUALITY OR TRENDS. It's like says jeans are "skinny" or "boot cut." It doesn't tell you the quality, style, trend-chasing, etc. It literally just tells you the silhouette.
