H&M and all it's ilk are garbage and you should avoid for anything other than socks and underwear. APC is cheap at resale and it lasts much longer than any cheap crap. Also lurk more.

Go to your thrift store (people will get salt about this) and find heavy feeling solid black, and solid white shirts. Also places like workwear stores will often have plain white t-shirts for cheap in three packs. Don't go spending over $10 or $15 on basics yet.
A good pair of jeans, in both black and blue, is also important. I'm a fan of black 505's and light blue 501s and 505s from Levi's.Its amazing the amount of variety you can get from just these things. Legs rolled up a little, shirts tucked in, etc.
Also remember that sneakers are all well and fine, but that a good pair of boots (again, some plain black leather boots from your thrift store will do it, look for ones with Vibram soles) or shoes are far more versatile. In terms of sneakers though, I've been a big fan recently of german army trainers, and you can find them very easy on ebay or in european used stores. They dont seem ubiquitous as Stans, but they are just as understated, plus, occasionally someone will think they are MM.
