I looked at the Carrera, I ignored Autavia because do I really need a watch that's basically called Autismo.

Does anyone else fucking HATE tachymeters? What's the point? Just divide into 3600 in your head, it's much more accurate and not even hard.

Tachymeters are unsymmetric and useless. They also give a false "estimate" time between the listed markers, when in fact they make it HARDER to know the rep rate for non-standard intervals, since it's a nonlinear process. They're also a sign of small brains. Prove me wrong.

Chanel still uses enamel in many of their top dollar watches. Just go to their website and do some cursory research and you’ll their HH work which is quite impressive. They have a watch with their in-house movement, retrograde minutes, jumping hour, and gold enamel sculpting. Not as impressive as a grand complication but still a charming throwback to old school watchmakers.

Snobby watch enthusiasts give them a hard time because they only recently started in-house production of movements. They did the same with Cartier. What the watch snobs don’t get is that these brands have so much money that they can get fairly up to speed in a short amount of time. Cartier went from being relentlessly mocked to being praised to high heaven in around a decade for their watchmaking. The same thing could happen for Chanel if they continue to invest so heavily.

>I'm not discounting Chanel, I'm just saying they should give a reason to be considered in the world of watchmaking.
If you have any appreciation of the difficulties in working with real enamel you’ll agree that this alone puts their high end offerings above the average manufacturer. Additionally they acquired a 20% stake in FP Journe a few months ago so I expect there to be some crossover.

I don’t know what you mean when you say they need to do something new. The enamel and gemstone work they do on the dials of the Mademoiselle Privé collection is utterly stunning and only rivaled by extremely niche and high end brands like Jaquet Droz.

I’m really not a Chanel fanboy. I don’t own a Chanel watch and will probably never buy one, I’m not a fan of a lot of their design elements. However, it seems absurd for people to baselessly criticize them when they are releasing literal works of art in their HH department.

>> No.14406955

>>14406947
FP Journe did something new when they entered the market.

JD did as well, although the name continued years past. The "new" company continued to honor that name.

Does Chanel have a 100+ year name in watchmaking like Jaquet Droz? No. Do they have a wholly new movement/dial style that, like it or hate it, FP Journe has? No.

I am not hating on Chanel. However, buying a good watchmaking company and slapping your name on it, instructing it to do something "high whorology" and then claiming it's actually so? Not the case.

I really want more companies to enter the game, however they need to make a mark for themselves. For example, nomos. I don't personally like the brand, but they almost perfected the modern bauhaus design in watches, while using an in-house DEVELOPED (see: not purchased or outsourced) movement, they created their own market.

Enamel and gemstone work is not enough to enter this industry; you have to make timepieces. If Chanel charged 25k for an Italian-designed Minerva-based watch, I would probably donate an organ for it.

They seem to be built to handle rugged use. Usually offer some sort of clasp adjustment and high water resistance. Things that are handy despite using them for diving. Also the bezel makes a great timer. I use it daily for cooking or laundry etc.

They can usually take some abuse. So lots of worry free wear. Traditional watches have leather straps and you can't really wash your hands or sweat in them so their uses are limited.

In terms of mechanical watches, it's a sure fire way to get a rugged watch that is water resistant enough for at least swimming. Because going back a few decades, it is not a given that a watch will be water resistant at all. Like people would take off their watches before washing their hands or stepping out on the rain.
There are obviously other tool watches that are (relatively) rugged, like field watches for instance. But for the lay person, the option was a dive watch or a dressy watch that couldn't get moist.

I needed parts for a customer's Seiko 7T32 quartz chronograph, but a lot of new parts are already extinct. So I bid on a busted up one on Yahoo.jp to use it as a donor. It arrived today and it's almost not worth tearing apart. With a new crystal, a movement service, dial feet replacement, an ultrasonic cleaning and a little light buffing it could be restored into a pretty nice piece.

But meh, I'll gut it anyway, and hold on to it, till I bump into an ugly 7T series and use that to replace the parts I take out of this one.

Also the 7T is complete disposable shit compared to the 7A. The pins that hold the plates together are made of plastic, so they break, so because of that new parts are already dried up. Also most gears are nylon, plates are plastic and assembly is complicated compared to the piss-simple 7A. But when it works it's not a bad watch.

I don't know if I ever claimed that, but I wouldn't disagree until someone posts something better. I've serviced my own 7A28, and it is indeed a very well built, and well designed quartz chronograph movement.

Maybe Seiko has something better now maybe in the upper-mid range to Grand Seiko, but the reality is I wouldn't know, since those movements are restricted to Seiko service centers, so unless I ever buy one for myself and take it apart, I can't tell.
