This thread is about the appreciation of watches, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a functioning timepiece. Discussion of shitters is to be diverted here:

Gotta have a Rooowwwwwlex

Seriously AP is awesome but hard to live with day to day. You honestly just look at it and the bezel scratches. Nothing beats their bracelet and case finishing. However their movements aren't that special. Had a 15202st.

JLC is nice and respectable but none of their styles suit my use cases. Their strap watches look awesome but I'm a hand washing freak and just always worrying about getting the strap wet is a hassle.

After owning all the holy trinity and tonnes of Omega and tag. Rolex really is the watch that suits most situations.

I'll be real with you, a friend and I were fucking around after buying some knockoff Hugo Boss clothes (we had a guy and he used real HB fabric, long story for another time) in Hawaii and went into the Rolex store at the mall. I don't know what the fuck we said but we were trying on $50k watches. There was some girl in there buying a sub $10k watch as a gift or something and chat my friend up while he was checking it out. He owns a pre-owned BMW and apparently that was enough to get her to let him dump a load in her.

After that we bought some chinese Rolexs (higher end ones, about $300 a piece) that were indistinguishable unless you looked close. That was basically all you needed to pick girls up in clubs over there. He did have one get super upset when she realized our apartment was by no means a "I can afford a Rolex" apartment.

It won't make up for having zero game but it will quell the "is this guy poor' doubts.

There are a lot of things I think about as being stages in my maturing into an adult. Just little things that nobody can tell you and if they do tell you, it doesn't sink like it should.
Women really do go after money. The more money you have, the more stupid shit they will put up with. A lot of incels can't grasp that they don't have dick going on with them and that's why, it's not always about the money. The potential for money is also important.

Even the girls who "aren't after money" still want that potential. You'd be surprised how quick they will flip as soon as someone with the traits the woman likes about you but with the addition of money comes along. Even if you're poor, the shittiest of women will still go after you for the little bit of money you can somehow provide.
I realized that the kinds of girls who were going after me, when I did freelance work in hillbilly country, weren't after me for my looks or personality. They were after me as a way out of hillbilly country. Even if it is money indirectly, it's still always going back to economic potential.

Not an incel btw.

You don't know how department stores work, do you? They use that max list price on Citizen's website as their base pricing and run rotational sales. Notice how literally no one but them (even the manufacturer) sells watches for the max list price. That way, now and then they can sell it for it's actual price with the allure of it being on "sale". Some people? Watches are the pinnacle of status symbol wastes of money. We mastered watch technology for under $10 but people will spend $30k+ for an objectively worse time-teller because it's viewed as a status thing.

Rolex has the brand recognition. JLC is what? Just another brand?
I hung out with my dad and his douchebag country club friends enough as a kid to know you are dead wrong. Rolex isn't the only big brand but JLC is barely known by anyone.
Sure, there are entry level Rolexes that can be had for under $3k (none are listed that low from Rolex) from resellers but JLC is right around that price bracket with their cheap stuff too. Honestly, those who give a shit know what a cheap Rolex looks like and look at it the same.
I realized you were full of shit when you said they were both "great watches".

That watch was around that price years ago, just like a lot of Eco drive watches. It's not the same as other Eco drives which are more expensive but it did sell for that price back then because to most people that's cheap and they don't know any better. We're not talking invicta msrp stuff here. I know the watch isn't worth 200 but most watches aren't worth what they sell for, for $50 it is a much better watch than other watches you can get for $50. Armani and Michael kors unironically sell for 150 with that msrp of 400

JLC watches hold their value about as well as a Seiko. Regardless of quality, that's a pretty huge turnoff for most people as even for the rich, a luxury watch is only behind cars and houses as the most valuable items they own (save for like gold bars and yachts and shit but even still, they make watches in that bracket).
So all quality discussions aside, that is not an attractive point to have when thinking about buying a watch.
That being said, you can get their high end watches for cheap.

>> No.14398811

I vaguely remember some bullshit about VLC being unique in that it uses components that look like the components knockoff watch makers use so it's far harder to spot a high end fake than other brands.

I had a fake Hublot that was indistinguishable unless you opened it up. I think they used the same glass, even. Best watch I ever owned.

>> No.14398829

Confirmed for having absolutely zero idea what the fuck you are talking about. Luxury items like watches and cars are purchased by the wealthy as ways to diversify their assets. Like, come on, you're a fucking awful troll. Why the fuck else are there 10,000 Lambos for sale with a few dozen miles on them? They are purchased as status symbols and durable goods used to 'store' wealth. A $50,000 item is not meaningless if it's worth $50,000. Yeah, there is a status side of it but the ultra expensive watches are purchased mostly for this purpose.
Source: I work in finance. Those who buy this kind of shit usually don't care about eating the minor depreciation. There are a multitude of reasons why they do this the most common being taxes. Everyone in my department usually receives some sort of expensive durable good as a 'gift' instead of getting a bonus every year because if they gave cash it could dick with our portfolios, even if it's a gift.

I'd argue financial diversification is a more common reason to buy nice watches than even as a status symbol.

And for the record, if you bought a durable item and now it's worth 1/4 of what you paid, was it ever worth what you paid in the first place?
Sure, the other brands do make a fine watch but Rolex is sort of the gold standard for valuable watches. I think they are overpriced garbage but the market disagrees.

This is a terrible hobby. You first have to spend $5k or more on a Rolex just to say you can afford them, to then be able to buy watches you actually like. I really like pilot and field watches that are usually around $1-2k, but if I buy those, I'll get "too poor for a Rolly?" all the time unless I just buy a Sub/Explorer/DateJust and wear it at some point in front of the people. This is no way to live, since the watches are supposed to impress even casual acquaintances and people you will never talk to again such as cashiers and waitresses, so you end up wearing the Rolex all the time, and all the watches you like end up collecting dust.

But yes, in general anyone who can't afford a luxury timepiece deserves to be castigated and treat with significant disdain. If someone can't afford to spend $5000-10000 on a watch it shows poor financial planning and/or a low income, that simply means they aren't worth your time.

True. I'm considering a nomos soon tho. I have a few things I need to prioritize first, but I'll get myself a cool nomos I think. Someday I might spend some bigger money on another nice watch too. Maybe a JLC or another Omega if they ever produce one that ticks all my boxes. But there are many other things I want that comes first. I disagree about what you say about vacations btw, a nice vacation gives me a lot more than a nice watch. I'll be spending around 3-4k on a trip to Italy this summer, and I won't regret it. Surely if I stayed home that money could be spent on a nice watch instead, but I prefer travelling.

No. Watches are nothing but status to 99.9% of people. If you ignore that, you ignore the main purpose of the watch.

After you satisfy that aspect of it (by buying a Rolex) you may go into full blown watch autism any way you wish.

It's certified by a bank if that's what worries you. Same for a yellow gold daytona with diamond markers but 14k.

Watches IS about status tho. It is a nice accessory that you wear, the nicer and better it is the more impressive it is or makes you feel. Just like Hermès ties are much nicer and more impressive than one you bought at H&M. The one you buy at H&M serves the very same purpose. But it's no Hermès. Now we all appreciate heritage and all that, which really is just about status too. I like Seiko, but I sure would like a "grand" seiko for that amount of money, just to have that luxury watch feel to it.

Buy the steel one which is priced somewhat ok relatively to what you get (still overpriced as fuck tho)
