Speaking of Tiffany, I saw this in the front of my local store while walking past the other day and was quite surprised at how much I liked it. Not sure it's what I'd spend 12k on but it's pretty nice looking for a watch that isn't from a real watch brand.

If you are also looking for something just generally casual but often smart and very much an ‘enthusiasts watch’ some of the best things to look for are vintage ap (older royal oaks) as their smaller (we’re talking 37-38 so not ‘small’) cases can look smarter and more casual while still being able to be dressed up, also as will always be the case vintage Rolex, but right now a few models not explodIng in price are the pre ceramic sea dweller but it is larger, or pre ceramic two tone especially blue. But again that’s a bit bold. Hard to go wrong with a vintage datejust or even oyster perpetual and the vintage air kings are often overlooked.
If your looking for new, Baume et Mercier Clifton automatics are a great casual option to consider. But really what are you looking for In a watch? Heritage? Specific complications? Do you want something sporty? Best to narrow down honestly what you want.

Another worthy consideration if you want something that is sporty, casual but can be smart enough to be dressed up, JLC master control date with the sector dial. They are around 5k I believe and still feature all the hallmarks of a JLC with in house movement and even a solid gold rotor.

I've lusted over 36mm Rolex Explorers for a while now. I'm not that successful so I don't consider myself Rolex material. Technically I have the money but I'm not sure I can justify spending that much. Lately I've been looking at Tudor Black Bay 36s and they have me interested. Most Tiffany watches are not very expensive. Rose gold versions are at around $10k but their average steel watch is only around $5k. Expensive compared to a Seiko? Yes. Expensive compared to an AP? No. You get what you pay for which for Tiffany’s means brand recognition and good external finishing with a serviceable movement. I wouldn’t buy one but I’d certainly take one over some nasty Baume & Mercier shitter.

Still if you want a jeweler’s watch with an actual good movement you have to pay the big bucks for a half decent Cartier.

Bob's Watch is ran by jews, it's is insanely expensive compare to their competitors. And they pay you nickle and dimes when you try to sell or trade in a Rolex. Nasty fuckers.

Crown and Caliber, you're right. It's like they throw away boxes and paper for their watches before selling them. They also tend to list watches with major defects or looking like they got dragged across gravel as "excellent" condition. Don't trust any of their shit.

Chrono24 trusted seller is a hit or miss. But they're expensive like Jew's Watch because seller just pass on the insanely high seller fees onto the customer. Also never buy from the jewelers from UK. For some reason the nasty brits treats their watches like shit.

Private seller, fucking good luck. "Everything runs well and mint condition". Be prepared for the fun of slowly discovering all the little problems with your watch.

No self respecting man has the time to play Rolex's game. Just get something else from a respectable brand.

Thats is throttling supply though. If a company doesnt care about keeping an artificial scarcity, they reinvest their revenue into scaling up production so they can make even more money. Granted, they may not be able to scale due to other reasons (like not being able to keep their standards of quality).

Regardless, my question still stands. Will this this scarcity of supply (whether it be artificial or not) affect their long-term success?

Production scaling isn't a simple task though - typically a multi-year expensive investment into production facilities, supply chain (have to now secure more raw materials), etc.

Retail itself is also a cyclical industry and "mid-level luxury" like $5-10K steel sports Rolex even more so - that new production capacity would sit dormant and eat up cost in an economic downturn. Rolex is already printing good profit I'm sure, so no need to change their structure. Their overarching parent company is also a Swiss charitable trust so presumably they don't have the same incentive to drive more revenue and profit like a shareholder-owned company.

Personally, I don't believe the supply issues will affect their long-term viability, barring a complete consumer shift in product desirability which is a separate issue altogether

My guess is that they make a lot less than most people think. I'm sure they have a solid gross margin but all that marketing and sponsorship they do doesn't come cheap.

Look at Richemont's "Specialist Watchmakers" business line (Lange, JLC, IWC, Vacheron, etc.) for example - they've done ~8-15% operating margins over the past few years, which isn't exactly stellar

Sure, let's take that as the case and that they therefore run at substantial premium to the relatively comparable Richemont brands I mentioned above - that's what, a 20-25% operating margin in what has been relatively strong recent years for luxury watches? This is a fixed-cost intensive model so they need some cushion for the down-years. Rolex is wholly owned by a Swiss charitable trust that appears to be heavily involved in actual charitable activities, another source of cost. Rolex is also selling their watches for ~50-60% of retail to the AD who then marks it up further.

Point being, I think most people tend to overestimate Rolex's profit as if they're just egregiously gouging consumers

Hi friends,

I'm 31 and a millionaire. I have a Timex weekender with 5 bands. Total cost about $50.

It's my favourite watch and nothing else is close. I like it because it's timeless and it goes with everything in my wardrobe, it's comfortable and if it gets scratched or I lose it, IDGAF.

The downside is that girls probably think I'm poor.

I really hate most watches I see, I find them tacky. Most of the $2-6k watches I see men wearing, just scream "Bro spent more than he could afford on something he doesn't have a clue about, so that he can show off" It's very cringe.

What should I do? I'd like to find something nicer, I guess. Not to appear rich, but at least to show I'm not poor. I have very small wrists, and the weekender size is perfect for me.

Pic related is a rare watch that I actually like. Still prefer my weekender though.

Unless they only sold Rolex, they were an AD. It’s more common in my experience for ADs to have watches like a sub because it’s not the first place people would go to buy one. The average person would go to a Rolex boutique first, which makes sense. And sometimes it’s just luck of the draw which places have a certain watch, especially if you live in a less populated city or less rich country. I’ve seen subs for sale in airports. As far as I can tell there’s no rhyme or reason.

Short answer is even just by looking at the case I can immediately tell it's a fake as Day-Dates never came in steel & gold. It's always cased in a precious metal.

Looking up close, the bezel and crown is horrible, there's the low-magnifaction cyclops, the terribly printed dial with fake diamonds, and finally the day disc on the change position which is the usual on Day-Date fakes.

Genuine Rolex and Patek have been solid investments for decades now and there seems to be no stop in sight. But you'd be spending quite a bit on any option that is worth it which seems to not be your goal here.

Jesus fucking christ, honestly your timex is what is tacky. My net worth about £700k and I can tell you when you scratch a 3-6k watch you don't give a shit or break 1k laptop (did that yesterday). You're looking at the wrong watchs you think they are tacky and a weekender isn't. Just stick to the classics sub, speedy, navitimer, reverso. No one cares what watch you have on and if you dating a girl that's interested in your watch / car / house, run run run. I'd keep the weekender for dates trust me.

I tend to fine people with money try to keep a low profile. All a girl needs to know is you have enough money. Drive the VW golf and ware a timex. Take the bmw and sub out on the weekend. If you have a mil, your mates know your rich, 3-6k on a watch is nothing that poor people talk. Wtf are you cringing about your over thinking it, just but a nice watch you like, just everyone else. What you have there is more than a watch, or a graduation gift. It's now become a family heirloom. There's more to it than dollar value, brand prestige, or watch snob appeal.
Treat it as such.

Yep more people need to realize the simple two rule of watches.
1.) buy the watch YOU like
2.) if buying to impress or investment buy a Rolex.

That’s all there is to it.

You nailed it, growing up and being poor. Never had money and when they get it, they don't know how to spend it or they blow it on stupid shit they can't get out of.

No one knows what Zenith is, and when you say El Primero, they think it's Mexican.

What a stupid mindset, I have a few omegas and not 1 Rolex. I have 10k in my watch fund and 200k isa's / saving and plan to add watches slowly to my collection it's not a case of money. I just don't want to pay above retail for a rolex. I didn't make my money by over paying for shit.

is there any association with them? i'd expect most people to look at it and not know if it was a $50 watch or a $1,000 watch. it doesn't look very expensive to me.

i have actually found some watches in here i like

>>14377504
yeah i am liking some of their designs a lot

>>14378623
this is not bad

>>14379264
this looks great, very similar to my weekender. i expected it to be around $100-300 and i was surprised to see it's priced around $2,000. looks very similar to my weekender, i think. if i was just at the bar on a date or with friends, i think nobody would ever notice one from the other. only way someone would notice is if they looked at it from a foot away, and then it would be obvious they're staring at my watch. that's never once happened.

so, i like the watch, but i'm left thinking, what's the point? i'd rather use the $1,000 to spend on travel with girls or something like that.

>>14378815
i might buy this one for around $700 because after watching that video, i'd never ever know it's not the real thing, and the watch itself looks pretty good.
