is aftershave an fragrance?

>> No.14348693

What’s your favourite summer fragrance that you can throw on shitloads of sprays without worrying about it being offensive? I’m thinking Dior Homme Cologne is good for that but I’m wondering if it’s too expensive to do that with. If not, would Nautica Voyage or something be good for that because it’s so cheap?

>> No.14348701

>>14348685
In the U.K. fragrances are colloquially called “aftershaves” but that’s not accurate. An aftershave is a balm or cream you apply to soothe any razor burn and sometimes they’re scented, but what we’re talking about here, despite sometimes being called an aftershave should never be used after shaving. It’s weird that it’s called that despite it being precisely the time you shouldn’t use it.

>> No.14348711

>>14348701
I guess it’s probably called that because when you’re getting ready for a date or something, you probably apply your fragrance last, after you’ve shaved.

I have Viking and I love it, but it’s definitely not going to be for everyone. I like the hot and cold mint and pepper combo with the lavender and dry vetiver. It’s a bit more mature compared to something like Aventus, I feel. Kind of an interesting take on an old school barbershop scent, but a bit spicier and louder. Not what I would call a super sexy scent, though I have gotten a couple nice comments on it.

Little sample haul with my purchase today.
Don't really care about most of them desu, philosykos, bergamont 22, and bamboo harmony were the only ones I specifically asked for. Tonka, Labdanum, and Eau Duelle seem worth wearing though. Oyedo and Hesperides are nice citruses but citruses generally dont interest me.

Philosykos will probably be my next purchase. I wasnt totally sold last time I sampled though, I'm happy to have 4ml to decide.

Smelled a lot from these 3 house, as well as Tom Ford and Parfums de Marly. Most of them I had smelled before besides PdM. Definitely some good ones from this house - I am liking Galloway on my arm, I should have grabbed a sample.

Side by side, from the top:
Oyedo is a bright, realistic citrus zest. I can definitely smell the orange, yuzu, and lemon individually. Mostly orange, but i think the yuzu adds a floral and sweet quality, where the lemon adds brightness to the others.

L'eau des Hesperides is more dry and complex. Definitely still dominated by zesty orange but the aromatics make it more interesting than Oyedo in my opinion. I think the mint is quite present but it doesn't smell "minty." I can tell the spices, cedar, and musk will start to reveal themselves more as it drys.

Both smell so natural, as to be expected from Diptyque. I actually like both a lot, but like I said, not necessarily my style.

Pretty good choices for a beginner. I havent smelled the guerlain but I would say go with Fahrenheit and White. Fahrenheit will work well fall, winter, and evening. White will work well spring and summer. They are both unique as far as designer scents go.

Ultimately though, dont let us decide. Pick whichever you enjoy wearing the most. Looks like they are still mostly full - use em up before deciding.

We shouldn’t talk about it, they don’t deserve to know about it and also just think we’re “shilling a shitty cheap clone” but refuse to smell it.

Also its getting a bit too in depth for noselets but CW isn’t really a true aquatic, there are no actual calone or watery notes. It uses dihydromyrcenol, apple, and mint to suggest that “blue” watery feel, its’s really just a fresh aromatic fougere.

Just got this in the mail as a blind buy, I can see why this gets compared to Aventus. The first 10 seconds or so smells kinda similar, and then the wood kicks in. Great for the price, although I can't smell the "creaminess" in the drydown that I've been reading in reviews

By the time it's a skin scent, it's very sweet and creamy, I think.
But then, I get a strong leather note in it other people around me can't seem to recognize.

Either way, it's great. I prefer it to Aventus.

Drydown of oyedo is more of a sweet citrus, more juicy than the zesty top.

I really like the drydown of Hesperides. The citrus all but disappears and you are left with a familiar aromatic scent. The mint really comes out in the mid, almost mentholated if you smell it off the skin.

I posted it. You must be on the best crack in the universe if you think la nuit has good performance. I have it. I admit the smell is wonderful but I never wear it because the performance renders it useless (1.5 hours if you're lucky) unless you decant it. I've only tried LNDL, and while it is a very good scent, the longevity really is rather poor.

I'd say it's best suited for evenings and dates. Definitely not a day time fragrance, although you could probably pull it off day time winter. Definitely not summer.

A friend of mine had it on a few days ago when we were walking around town, it was a hot day and it just smelled really damn awkward on that occasion, not pleasant at all.

Trouble is that I'm not sure it could last even those three to four hours you've mentioned. I think you'll be lucky to get 2 hours out of it. And keep in mind that it turns into a skin scent really shortly, so people will have to be really close to you to actually smell it.

Philosykos is fabulous. I like the EDT more because I think the coconut is less pronounced. Its probably the freshest, most juicy fragrance I have ever tried - all without citruses or aquatic notes which I dont really care for. Its soo green, but the coconut really rounds it out and completes it. I have tried Eau de Lierre form Diptyque as well, which I would describe as Philosykos without the coconut - and it definitely feels like it is missing something - just a little too sharp and austere.

Thats all I have given a proper wear of so far. But I will continue to comment on the others as I go through them.

under the cold wind of the dolmen i dreamt. in the silver landscape i walked through an olive grove in the nude. the flora in abundance and the air was mild and gentle on my skin. the smell of clove became prominent. at last there was the twisting trunk of the final olive tree at the end of the grove and over the hill there was a decaying doric order seemingly isolated. as i neared i saw a young man, pale as dust, tall, slender, tight and solid. he was sitting on a stone tablet eating a pomegranate. he saw me. "hello, anon," he said, the voice so familiar, so resonating. it was kouros. for a long time already it had been nothing more than a voice in the dark, a voice that seemed to take shape in the shadows. "kouros," i said. "you've come a long way. are you tired," he asked. "no," i replied. "have you doused," he asked. before i could reply he stopped me. "i am the mist, anon... the atom. i am the rainbow that stands on the earth. there have been many sordid people but i chose you," he said. "i am arched in blood but i've been cleansed by you and i've become vivid again. they can see me now." i didn't understand. "i know you don't understand me, but you will... come douse," he said. i woke suddenly.

I like it. Christmas in a bottle.
It's very "sharp" though.

Try out the walmart version first. It comes close. I think the walmart version works for Spring too.

This other knockoff "double green" does too.

I've tried other knockoffs and they dry down to baby powder shit but these two stay good the whole way through.

Found myself liking the sweet and fresh floral scents more than fresh fruity scents, smelled the hyped aventus and cdnim and they're not to my liking.

I like the smell of versace eros and chanel eau extreme, is jpg ultra male sweeter than those two? Also how about pdm layton? I'm thinking of buying decants of ultra male and layton

Eau Duelle is like vanilla extract upon spraying, after just a few minutes it settles into something really beautifully spicy and warm. It reminds me vaguely of dry earl grey tea leaves, even before reading the notes which happen to include black tea and bergamot. Despite the strong dose of vanilla, its very dry, not sweet.
I picture wearing this to holiday parties haha.

I'm not big on gourmands but I am really enjoying this. Again so natural, smooth, well blended. If Diptyque has a bad fragrance, I haven't smelled it.

>> No.14356764

How much do you worry about longevity and sillage? There seems to be a certain subset of people among fragrance enthusiasts that simply refuse to accept the a fragrance is good if it doesn’t have 20ft of sillage and last for six days. I just don’t understand why this is. I get that you want the thing to last, but the idea that some light, citrus fragrances are “bad” because they only last four hours seems ridiculous to me. That’s not what it’s about.

Regarding the Eau Duelle I agree. While being my first Diptyque its unsweet vanilla and dryness quite put me off. After some more sprays I began to appreciate it. I wonder how the edt compares to the edp.
Perhaps not bad but plain are in my opinion Eau de Lierre which smells like green freshly cut garden waste or Eau Mohéli with its overpresent ylang ylang. There is also olène that has nothing more than jasmine to it in my opinion.

Sorry for the rant, i just wanted to share my experience and see if anyone else experienced something similar. So I've been getting into the fragrance thing for a few weeks now and bought like...6 or 7 bottles, all for the sake of smelling better for girls that i go on dates with. I was wearing the Dior Bois D'argent and I was talking to these two beautiful girls, and apparently they thought my scent was just ok, but Axe Dark temptation was much better!??

I quote "if i smelled the guy with axe, even without looking, my first reaction would just be to jump on him immediately". Apparently their favorite smells are axe 1st, paco's 1million second. They're like, those axe commercials on TV, as absurd as they are, are actually pretty close to how they feel about guys that wear it. And these girls are smart, model materials (6'1 skinny waist with junk in the trunk. phenomenal figure.)!! I feel like i shoulda just bought cases of Axe instead, goddammit. LoL

Has any experienced the same kinds of comments? or have you worn axe with much greater success than your "real" colognes? How about that one million? (i still cannot stand the bottle...imo it is like the definition of douche in a bottle, lol, but hey if it works i might just have to do it, lol)

I like Eau de Lierre, but in an earlier post I compared it to Philosykos w/o the coconut - I felt it lacks something to round it out, the greenness can be somewhat abrasive. I have probably smelled the other two on paper but not enough to comment. I find soliflors to be diptyque's style. I understand the criticism of all ylang ylang or all jasmine, but I'd bet they are well done regardless.

I eventually got tired of Eau Duelle, and the vanilla definitely has a vanilla extract like quality which I didnt love. Still a wonderful fragrance, but not for me – which is usually the case with this house.

the more I get into fragrance, the less I believe in gender and age categorization. Don't get me wrong, there are certainly long held associations - but if you enjoy something, wear it. I also think style and confidence has a lot to do with it. A young man can certainly pull off a mature fragrance if he is mature himself.
