Used to be.
When it was still just Heuer, they produced some truly excellent, historic chronos.
Now, they produce mall-tier dogshit with off-the-shelf ETA movements. It's the "nice" watch for people who don't know shit about watches and can't afford a Rolex.
Their "in-house" movements are cased in absurd-looking designs derivative of Hublot Big Bangs, but minus any of the HBB's sense of fun. Hublot knows it's a clown watch, TAG Heuer takes itself too seriously.

My wrist is 17cm and I can pull off a 42mm watch no problem. Just check the lug to lug of the watch because that's more important than case size when it comes to sizing and only few brands state the lug to lug on their websites.

In my experience, for my wrist, anything under 50mm lug to lug is good to go.

Think of what engines are most widespread. The Buick V6, the Ecotec, the Multijet, the modular V8, etc. Are they considered the coolest? Pretty much never. They're good, reliable engines of course, but they don't power the cars that kids have posters of.
Now, think of some of the coolest cars out there, and the engines that powered them. The 787B and its rotary engine, Lamborghini's flagship supercars and their V12 engines over the years, or the hyrbid drivetrain of the LaFerrari. Those are the automotive equivalent of in-house movements. Whether it's technological prowess, or the just the personality, or exclusivity, there is something about them people find inherently cooler.

Of course, you can take your 7750 powered chrono to your local watchmaker and have it fixed relatively cheaply, knowing he has seen it a thousand times. But there is something pretty damn cool about having an El Primero, if only because it is different.

Honestly all of the big 3 (PP, VC, and AP) have really reasonable service prices.

Rolex charges more than both PP and VC for the most basic service ($800).

However, keep in mind, however, that PP, VC, and AP recommend servicing every 5 years. Rolex says you should service every 10 years.

when the nips btfo'd the swiss watchmaking industry with quartz the old brands decided the best way to survive was to re-brand as luxury goods. AP had already sold a (for the time) luxury stainless steel royal oak which was more expensive than it's precious metal counterparts yet sold gangbusters, so there was a precedent there for success.

so, what were essentially high end enthusiast tools of the time became a high end, luxury item but with zero sacrifice to quality and technology. that's the sweet spot Rolex occupies today, a hand made but mass produced top of the line, bulletproof luxury good.

sadly this is true. I only recently started looking into getting my first new Rolex from an AD, and boy is it a bad time to be getting into stainless steel sport models right now. Waitlists that don't really exist, no chance of a discount, and some bizarre new business model by AD's where they only sell you a stainless steel sport model if you've spent X amount of money with them already. The last part was something that was told to me by two different AD reps. You do realize it's not an AD problem, right?

Rolex and other brands don't like grey market, and they penalize dealers that have too much supply that ends up there. It's less about "you must spend $X to get the watch" and more about "I know you're a trusted customer that isn't going to flip this in a month".

Even if a guy just shows up and drops $60K+ on a platinum model it doesn't automatically qualify them for next in-line for a hot model like SS Pepsi...

>> No.14347101

>>14347077
One of the problems is actually AD's selling those in-demand watches to their dealer friends and then splitting the profit. The watch never even gets to a customer.

>>14347090
That's not buying the same watch in bulk. You are right though if you could spend tens of thousands on other watches just to get a 8k steel Rolex but it doesn't make a lot of sense to flip it afterwards would it.

Rolex ADs don't give a fuck and actively push shit to the grey market, it's why you can jump on Chrono24 and get any steel stunner at your doorstep tomorrow morning provided you pay the premium. ADs offload their trash (datejusts, cellinis, yachtmasters etc) in bulk to greys on the agreement that they'll also supply some steel stunners.

If they didn't do this every Rolex AD would be a massive pile of dogshit no one wants that sat around never getting sold, with people only ever dropping in to buy SS.

the new pepsi GMT SS model retails for around 10k at the AD. They sell grey for nearly double that. So on top of getting your money back on the DJ's and OP's at the very least, you've also made 10k on one SS GMT model.

Not sure what GMT you're going after in particular but most Pepsi waitlists for example are multi-year, and some ADs won't even bother putting you on a list in the first place if you haven't done some business with them
