It's overcompensating. The guys with bigass beards today started growing them out as the trend was already beginning to cool down. So they are the leftovers valiantly carrying the flag of 1890s-core. Now they are trying to cling to a trend that died around them before they ever had a chance to have a giant beard while it was cool.

You can tell they're the guys who are always just on the trailing edge of any trend by their tattoos, clothes, haircuts, etc.
