Solovair:

Pros:

>"durrrrr muh heritage"
>way more classic styles, including your basic bovver boots like their line of steel toe cap-models and the more traditional Premium-line with classic brogue-, derby- and dress boots
>price is almost comparable to DMs, especially when it comes to more special models
>excellent site and quick customer support

Cons:

<despite being a hand built boot in the UK, the quality control is shoddy and it's like flipping a coin
<the standard PVC-sole is garbage, even weaker and more prone to cracking and spliting than on DMs (for some reason the old yellow'd sole seems to be more sturdy)
I have experience about this. Just yesterday as I was cycling back home, I noticed the sole had started to split apart from the darkened welt on my boots. This split was minor and I was glad to notice it early on, but even after emailing Solovair they basically told me the same they had answered to some dude on a Reddit-comment; "it's just the construction, the fault has been there since the beginning, get it glued, heat-sealed or send it back (postage is on you) to us so we'll seal it". I've never had this issue with my DMs, even my oldest pair of MiA-1490s have all sorts of issues now, leather splitting, sole rubbed down, but it has never split open.
>leather on anything other than the Premium-line of boots is the same plastic-coated crap as on DMs, but with a slimmer coating to allow for an easier shine

Docs reign in more consistent quality, Solovair with the better selection.

Might seem like a meme to you but I have boots, bags, and jackets made with guidi leather and they're miles ahead of other leathers I've owned.
Guidi is a family tannery that's been around for for over a hundred years. The fact that they started designing and producing 'dark' tinged stuff is besides the point. The innovative treatments, hand dying, and construction all speak for themselves.
If you don't the want goof ninja design just go for their classic line produced under the original Guidi e Rosellini name.

The welt-bit on the inner arch really isn't a stress point. Or, by they way normal people walk. I don't know what sort of fucked up "virgin vs. chad"-dance you make on your walk to the store.

The soles are supposedly heat-welted, or melted into the darkened welt, the same way soles on DMs are made both in Asia and in England. I'm just surprised this problem seems to prevail as equally with Solovair too, despite marketing itself as a sturdier, more well-built and checked product compared to DMs.

All shoes are okay for summer. I live in a hot country and boots are just fine. I mean, with leather and socks, they will protect your feet from the heat outside. The idea that shoes and socks will always make your feet hotter is ridiculous. If anything, what they do is stabilizing your feet temperature, so it’s not influenced by the external temperature, like hot tropical environment or cold grey Europe.

That being said, shoes should go well with your pants. And if you’re gonna wear shorts, wear something that matches that, but you’ll always need thick socks. Thin socks just feel hotter imo.

I was looking into buying a pair of the made in england dr martens because i didnt want some made in vietnam bullshit that the standard ones are but i was priced out and the shipping was insane to australia.

instead i went with solovair because they are by default made in england.

i've got to say that i can see and feel the difference in craftsmanship. they are still a bit rigid, though i wear them every day but they're getting there. one thing i did notice with them is there are machine marks all over them only visible if you look really closely and one of the eyes for the laces has been lightly miscut (not a full cut, more a ring indent from the tool used) and then cut properly in the right place.

I feel like those imperfections give them more character.

A question about boot repair. I have a pair of red wings and the heel has now worn enough that it's affecting their comfort and how I walk. Can I take them to get resoled at any old cobbler? Are there things I should be looking for/avoiding when choosing a cobbler? Thanks in advance.

>> No.14305734

>>14303126
Absolutely get them resoled at a cobbler. If they''re worn enough to affect your gait you've probably let them go too far.
A competent cobbler should be able to control and repair the damage by rebuilding the midsole/welt with wood, leather, or synthetic material. Then the cobbler will replace the sole itself, which is generally stitched onto the welt, as with Red Wings.
Depending on the damage, your location, and the quality of the cobbler, expect to pay as much as seventy dollars. I have a local guy who actually cobbles soles back together, as in he repairs bits and pieces of them when he can rather than replacing the whole thing. He charges less than the other cobbler near me but he doesn't stock Vibram soles so it's a trade-off.
Look online for reviews of cobblers near you and stop into a few to get quotes/estimates for the repair. Take a look at their setup (does it look clean, do they have proper tools, do they appear to get a lot of business, etc) and judge for yourself.

This is simply not true. The taller you are the stupider and uneccesarily tall u look with very big heels. Shorter to average guys look best in high heel boots, think David Bowie, medium size guys look best in them though. I would go as far as to say, anyone taller than 6 feet should not wear a heel as high or higher than the typical slp Wyatt heel, which is not super tall but it’s unnecessarily tall, you feel retarded in them. Butt a shorter 1 inch heel or a bit bigger looks great on tall guys

Well if proper shined up like mine (pic related), then they're just as hi-shine as the word says. Not quite as shiny as patent leather tho, and not polishing them up makes them a lot murkier and more matt. But it's just worse for the leather. If you want full matt leather (and a shorter break-in), look the greasy leather option.

help me out /fa/ I bought redwing IR's a couple months ago but returned them because I wasnt a fan of the toe box.
Now I am thinking about giving RW another chance with the merchants in ebony harness. I prefer a pair of black boots that I can pair with black pants but every damn image I find on these ones never appears to have the same shade.
Should I cop and dye? Could I get away with paring them anyway? Anyone with experience with the merchants? Begging you lads.

The Merchants are the same boot as the Iron Rangers and Blacksmiths, but with a flat toe and different sole. They're all built on RW's number 8 last.
If you liked the IRs but didn't like the toe then you'll also like the Merchants. And black is such a retarded meme color for shoes. I have some boots in black CXL that I never wear because I don't wear much black clothes, and black boots basically only look good with black pants.
Get the Merchants, beat them up, but take care of them and they'll last you years and you'll love them. Get them in the ebony harness. It's a great color that's not super common so you'll look good wearing them and it allows more creativity when coordinating outfits.

I own Whites boots and Red Wings and am planning on getting some Crockett and Jones boots soon and even I still want a pair of Merchants to add to my rotation.

Currently wearing some Red Wing Iron Rangers, for me that was a rough break-in period... as much as the boots softened up my feet had to also adapt, becoming rougher/thicker and more numb in certain areas. Super comfortable now, more comfortable than my sneakers (not in terms of shock absorption but fit, especially in the insole and around the ankle)

Got some Wolverines on the way in the mail which I heard is even worse but we'll see...

Ultimately planning to get some Viberg service boots for myself come christmas.

What do you guys use to treat your boots? I've started using Windsor saddle soap & leather balm... leaves them looking a little too matte though so used some petroleum/beeswax stuff which gives them a subtle sheen but really darkens them
