I have done lots of looking for months, research, and soul searching.
My first real luxury watch will be between a Rolex GMT Master-II, or an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean

id love a cleaner watch like pic related, because most of what i wear is rather muted, washed out, and not very "busy"
but i'm also an idiot when it comes to watches because its not something ive had much of an interest in until my dad brought it up a few weeks ago. but also if cleaner/less busy watches are overworn and stupid, tell me that too ty

anyways i'm a wristlet (18cm around) and i don't have any particular style or bracelet preferences other than not wanting it to look "busy", probably not trying to spend more than ~$500 either,

Personally, I'm building a relationship with my AD (I've bought a few from them already) so that I can get better access to rarer waiting-list watches like SS Daytona, PP Aquanaut, etc.

Most Rolex also don't see steep value declines so unless you're buying at the very low-end of the market you don't often find great savings and can always run the risk of it being more damaged / scratched up than one would like

Doesn't seem that bad for the lollipop hand version, they all seem around that with no bracelet.
Tudor should release a classically styled Sub, with aluminium bezel insert, domed acrylic, no applied indices and proper case proportions. Make it their entry level model at 40 & 36mm sizes. With those features it wouldn't steal Rolex buyers that go for the gaudy-ness of the Rolex Sub, but we could have a classic Sub with a modern movement and bracelet.

Quarts watches tick. Every second they tick and the seconds hand goes forward one tick. It's what most people think of when they think of watches. Chances are almost any watch you have lying around or see on the streets is a quartz.
Mechanical watches don't tick, they sweep. They have a smooth sweeping of the seconds had around the dial. That's why there's no ticking sound.
Quartz watches run on batteries and are typically cheap, mass-produced shit. But they're ultra reliable and accurate. They're infinitely more accurate than a mechanical. They lose as many seconds in a month as a mechanical does in a day.
Mechanicals use gears and springs, are more complicated and much more expensive. But they have soul. A human put the pieces together and made them work together despite being complicated and the idea of mechanical watches is art.
Most people in this thread don't give a shit about quartz, as it's soul-less and cheap. There's nothing special or unique about a quartz.

Skagen makes pretty minimalistic watches, but (most of the time) not to the point of being unreadable. Yes, fashion watch, but having a look at them is free. Or Mondaine. Or some Seiko. My wrist is 16,5 and I can wear a 43mm flieger with ease. Thickness of the case and the shape of the lugs is also a big factor of how a watch wears.
Whatever do you mean by "overworn"? As in not /fa/ anymore? Depends on the occasion and where you plan to wear it, just for daily abouts? If anything, those big overcomplicated and oversized gaudy Diesels and whatnot are out of style. Not that they ever were /fa/.

Also, who really needs a watch with that much magnetic resistance? Is that population of people so vast they need their own watch? Not really.

Your feeling is accurate, because it is literally what Seiko is trying to do.
Outside of Japan, "Seiko" is synonymous with durable, reliable, but ultimately disposable, 50 dollar beaters. Their massive (and confusing) lineup beyond that is unknown to 99% of the people. Trying to sell a Seiko that costs thousands of dollars is hard.

So they simplify their product range and break it into clearly-defined lines. Prospex for reasonably-priced sports watches and Presage for reasonably-priced casual-to-dressy waches. GS and Credor become their own lines. That makes it much easier to understand and justify the price.

The 9F movement is absurdly accurate.
Their mechanical movements are, let's be honest, nothing special, even the hi-beat ones.
The Spring Drive is a meme and sounds great until you need to have it serviced.

All their non-quartz watches are thick as fuck too. The 9F quartz watches are much thinner and are accurate to +/- 10 seconds per year (or 5 seconds if you get one of the special starred versions).

If it's the finishing you're after, all Grand Seikos get that.

Bottom line, spend your money on quartz, a technology that Seiko has been a pioneer in since the beginning, that Seiko has spend decades perfecting.

>Their mechanical movements are, let's be honest, nothing special, even the hi-beat ones.

>>14273655
>I agree that their mechanicals are nothing extraordinary

This is incorrect. Grand Seiko's mechanical movements are the most extensively hand adjusted regulated balance movements made today. They still feature a proprietary inner terminal curve geometry on their hairsprings that no one else even tries to compete with on regulated balance movements, they were among the first series produced mechanical movements in the world to feature MEMS escapements with skeletonization and extremely intrinsically balanced balance wheels.

They also do extensive functional finishing on their movements, such as individually polishing every gear tooth on the entire movement using hand operated machines.

Finally, the art of manually adjusting the geometry and coil spacing of hairsprings, by eye, using tweezers to pre-enptively compensate for the effects of position and the torque curve of the mainspring, is a voodoo like art that has almost entirely disappeared from modern watchmaking. Grand Seiko are probably the last volume producer of watches that still has those skills and uses then on production watches. As a result, Grand Seiko makes the most accurate and precise regulated balance movements in the world.

You may not care about the things that make Grand Seiko's mechanical movements special, but they certainly do exist.

There's a difference between grey and second hand. Grey is either stock an AD couldn't sell in store so they get rid of it on the grey market, or it's simply an online store that doesn't have a brick and mortar presence so can reduce the commission. However you will certainly not get the real guarantee from the manufacture as that's restricted to an AD sale.

> do you get the one in the window that you've tried on or do you get one all wrapped up and boxed? I don't want a watch that a bunch of other poor people have had on
Depends. If the store has several in stock you'll get a non-display watch but if it's the last one ...

> Is going grey a bad idea?
It's a judgement call. Buying grey can save you thousands on a new watch. Buying from an AD means you are 100% sure to get the real thing with no risk and a full set of legitimate papers and service guarantee. Also if you keep spending with the same AD you'll build up a relationship and possibly get preferential treatment acquiring the latest watches.

Personally though I think second hand is the best option if you can find a good dealer.

Niggers and that guy who bought a fake black bay fall into this category and they aren't people. The vast majority of people who don't care about wristwatches are in the middle.

Well, GS doesn't do any machine applied anglage, heat blued screws, or pearlage such as Zenith, Rolex, and JLC at slightly higher prices, and which Nomos does at lower prices (but with other significant trade-offs).

As I noted above though, Grand Seiko does a lot of functional finishing and hand adjustment on their movements that isn't cosmetically obvious but pays functional dividends.

I really hate Fashion junk like Michael Kors, Diesel, Polo, Fossil, Ice, etc.

Why don't they call them "costume" watches. That's what they call the crap jewelry.

Now days I find it beyond extremely rare for anyone to notice that I'm wearing a real Rolex, or to even bother asking if it's real..... even in jewelry and watch stores.

Before some turd says something in a squeaking annoying voice like "if you bought a Rolex to be noticed, you aren't a real watch guy", I say get bent.

If I wanted something to keep perfect time, I'd buy a quartz watch. I bought my GMT because I could, and hell yeah it would be ok to be recognized once in awhile... I'd even respect someone more for noticing it and knowing something about watches.
