Decided to ignore that haters a few weeks ago and do not regret it a bit. You get the cedar and the leather right away as well as some black tea. Despite the wood and leather it wears fairly fresh. I guess you can wear it ins summer if it’s not too hot. But that’s something I actually wonder about.

Probably gonna want to add one other summer fragrance. Thinking about TdH Vetiver Intense or AdP Chinotto. Does anyone have recommendations that complement my collection?

Kind of reminds me a bit of a mix of Dior Feve Delicieuse and TV. Very much worth trying, but also very much a winter scent. Quite heavy and very good longevity, as well.

No, it just had its moment in the sun and is part of the furniture now, just like how you don't have people constantly hyping Habit Rouge.

The formulation is fine, in both concentrations they are very nice, balanced scents. I prefer the EdT. The EdP can be a little heavy when the weather starts to get warmer.

I have Bois Marocain. It's a woody incense, spicy and smoky, lots of cedar and cypress, and a pleasant vetiver. I've never smelled it anywhere other than on me.

I did not like Dress Code. It's a ham fisted attempt to modernize Habit Rouge and still stay true it its DNA.

The vetiver in Encre Noire was fine, it was the ISO E Super and cashmeran overdoses that make it intolerable for a lot of people.
The vetiver in Bois Marocain is very clean-smelling but still earthy/rooty. It goes well with the incense and woods. Grey Vetiver uses an extremely light and fresh vetiver. If they'd used an earthier vetiver for GV is would have smelled out of whack.

I like the Guerlain over the AdP's on their own merit. The Homme EdP has a really unique rhubarb-lime-mint thing that's perfectly fresh and summery and doesn't have the same neroli-citrus-bergamot that every summer cologne-type fragrance has.
And even if you want a cologne-type, Mugler Cologne is a lot more interesting.

AdP's colognes are generally balanced and natural-smelling but they're just not that interesting to me because they're based on a style that's centuries old at this point.

I'm very into fragrances and have been for many years and get opinions from all kinds of women. I've never heard anyone described a fragrance as sleaze, nor would younger girls know to even associate a fragrance to the 80s.

The whole 80s sleaze thing is a meme. Yeah I can imagine some 55 year old women saying that if she was around at that time and some guy hit on her in a club wearing tons of it but other than that, nope.

There are niche frags shilled here all the time based on the niche status and price. yes, Tuscan leather that smell 100% more cigarettes than Drakkar ever could.

Lots of niche frags are not mainstream sweet/aquatic and don't have mass appeal so technically they would be in the same category as Drakkar but people put them ahead once again based solely on the "niche" status of them. It's not based on anything other than that.

Lots of popular frags have 80s era Drakkar roots too and new frags can have much older inspiration (i.e. basically a copy) which all adds up to the "Drakkar smells like sleaze/old man etc." being a meme.

Drakkar was a joke on Family Guy, so every zoomer makes fun of it without ever smelling it. I used to wear it to work a lot when it was cooler out and a slightly older woman always said how good I smelled and that she swooned for guys that wore Drakkar when she was in high school. I might wear some today desu, but I’ve been really enjoying Pino Silvestre since I got it with Yatagan yesterday so i may just wear that instead.

To be honest, Drakkar Noir then and now is not the same scent. I had a chance to try out the original formulation and it was insane, so piney and masculine, it had a real aftershavy smell if that makes any sense. I bought a new bottle of Drakkar and now it just smells like shaving foam and it doesn't have the longevity.

Yeah it's been reformulated BUT it's so cheap nowadays that there's no reason not to own it. I only have the newer version. For the most part, trying to get vintage bottles is useless IMO. You have to go through a minefield of fakes, ripoff price gouging, etc to finally get a cologne that just smells old with dissipated top notes.

I was wracking my brain for the last few months trying to find a vintage Fahrenheit, only to finally sample it and realize that my 2016 bottle smells better and fresher since the top notes are actually still intact. Vintage hunting can be fun but ultimately it's a waste of time and sanity.

and lol, when has piracy ever had that effect?

anyways, most notable clones are copies of high-end niche perfumes. those are luxury items, and their intended market is not the guy who would have second thoughts dropping $250+ on a bottle. those prices are not coming down.

Dylan Blue actually has some interesting accords (patchouli, incense, fig, violet leaf), it's basically a stinky 80s fougere masquerading as ambroxan fuccboi shit. Save your money and get the Dylan Blue.

If you want the real version, just get Kouros and stop fucking around with zoomer frags.

Last time I tried Eros was about 2 years ago, in the middle of August (it was on display and the bottle looked nice) when I was starting out with frags.
I found it powerfully sweet and a little nauseating, however thinking back on it, it's something i'd like to rediscover.
Do I sample on skin at the local perfume store, or since I know the scent is it fine to just buy a bottle and use it when it won't be cloying?

Are there any vintage fragrances that don't smell like old man frags?
I'm talking about stuff, for lack of a better term, for the well-dressed gentleman.

I've tried Guerlain's Heritage, Caron's 3rd Man, and Creed's Bois du Portugal but they all smell like a grandfather. Not bad, mind you, just out of place on a guy in his late 20s.

Try Pour Un Homme de Caron. It's from the 30s so it's as vintage as it gets. It actually still smells kind of modern, since it's a fairly simple formula.
It starts with a sharp, bracing lavender and settles down into an ambery vanilla. That's about it.

It's got none of that patchouli-tonka-cedar base that you're probably equating with old-man fougeres.

>Are there any vintage fragrances that don't smell like old man frags?
Honestly, no, not really. Modern fragrances _tend_ towards soapy freshness, even heavy fuckers like first formulation M7 have a clean-smelling amber accord to offset the (strange for the time) medicinal oud scent.
Old fragrance formulae generally don't have that.

Based on what you've tried though, I think it's just that you maybe don't like old style aromatics/fougeres. (sample Azzaro Pour Homme or Paco Rabanne Pour Homme and see if you get the same reaction from them.)

That said, though, >>14236339 is a pretty good idea. If you're comfortable with its dandy-ness you may also want to try Habit Rouge, which is similarly vanilla-heavy but has a smoky, leather thing going as well.

I get better performance out of Mugler Cologne than I do NP. It’s a shame how the TFPB fragrances like Tuscan Leather and Oud Wood are among my favourites of all time, and yet the clean, fresher fragrances from the same line are the worst performing fragrances I’ve tried.

If you’re curious, the original Colonia is good too, but it’s quite dated. If you like the idea of smelling like a 50s barbershop/Cary Grant looks love it, but Essenza has a bit more depth and feels a little more modern. I’d still recommend trying both though. Colonia has been popular for 100 years so it must do something right.
