I have an event at the horse races coming up in May. I initially wanted to go in full morning dress, but apparently that's only being done at the Royal Ascott in the Royal Lounge. I was advised to choose something more comfortable and informal, in similar vein to a summer suit.

What would you guys do? I'm perfectly willing to hash over the money for a new suit, but I'd like to be able to use it besides this event. So I'm thinking about a double breasted suit, in either blue or white. Blue would be ideal because I'd be able to use it for casual Friday. I work for a bank, so dressing down is a relative thing. The white suit would be a big no-no, but might be ideal for summer weddings?

I went for country attire last time I went to Cheltenham but I don't know shit about how you're actually meant to dress, I was there in a semi professional role. What I will say is this, there will be people more important than you, they will look like complete shit and it will be annoying. Just try not to think bout it. Of what you posted, get the blue. If you get the white some slag will have a hissy fit about you wearing it to a wedding and you'll probably just end up getting horse poo on it.

Jokes aside, it's way more common in Europe to 'dress up'. For me this started with the parties my parents gave and afterwards rowing in university. And now, working in finance, I'm forced to dress up for the rest of my life. Although I had a meeting with our NY counterparts last month, and they all had the midtown uniform of brown loafers, weirdly pressed slacks, and those ridiculously hideous vests, so I'm afraid you'll have to move to Europe.

Has anyone here been dressing prep for a while and is reconsidering their approach to it?
I've been "officially" dressing prep for over 5 years now. I've grown to dislike the overly clean cut and "preciousness", it now screams corporate drone tory cunt to me. I remember it didn't bother me at first, so it is probably just a reflection of the changes in my personal and professional life.
Nonetheless, I've been striving to achieve a more relaxed, minimalist, rugged look, while keeping the same clothes I had before (I've built a pretty solid wardrobe over the years). In concrete terms, that means:
- Embracing worn out clothes (frayed shirts and pants, loafers in dire need of a good shine, mended shaggy worn out wool sweaters), helps attenuate the squeaky cleanness
- Improbable combinations (beat up white sneakers, pressed grey flannel pants, white ocbd, puffy down jacket and beat up backpack)
- Resisting the urges to buy useless clothes (that sweater can be mended yet another time, those sneakers can still hold up a few more months), it's a waste of money and the fashion industry is very polluting
I don't know if there's a name for that. Poorfag prep? Hobo prep? Modest prep? Rugged prep?

Goal of all that: don't look like that pretentious "my daddy will sue you" twat most people know, support a more economically and environmentally viable fashion, look better.
I rest my case.

>> No.14175576

>>14175573
no that is exactly what it is. that is true prep.
it is about frugalness, well used clothing, frayed collars are just about the most prep thing there is.
if you get raised in the clothing than it is not a hobby to you, it's just what you wear. you wear it because you've been raised in it, so among true upper class people you'll see a lot less clean cut shit and more well used stuff and also in my expierence more faux passes (when there is no dress code of course, when there is they'll definetly adhere to it). that's just how it works

so basically you discovered true prep but for a wrong reason.

and to continue on that, i've been raised in prep clothes and for a long time i didnt really care about it. just wore what's in my closet. and that is really when you pull of prep the best, i just wore shirts and chinos and boat shoes because i didnt know otherwise, just always been that way same for my friends. it was never 'neat, tidy tory cunt' like you are describing

i still often wear the basic loafer+khakis+oxford shirt combo because it just looks really good and it is what i've been raised in and is what is most (mentally) comfortabally to me, but lately i've been venturing out.
i dont treat it as a uniform (i never really did but still). like sometimes ill wear a shetland with just an undershirt instead of a shirt, lately i've been also geting really fond of '80s dadcore, like pic rel. George Costanza has also become a big fashion inspiration for me, unironically. I also shop a lot at LL bean and Lands End getting basic dadcore stuff, i just like it a lot.

one thing ill never do though is wear sneakers outside of sports/deep summer. just cant get used to it. dont think they look good, and i think they're the epitome of lazy and always just look bad

probably the most illuminating post ive seen here in a while. was expecting this thread to be cringe.

to put it in other words, real old money WASPs were actually quite frugal and also outdoorsy. their style was just an american take on the traditional british bourgeois country styles which still exist today. earthy colors, and worn-in clothing that they take care of. white shirts, brown/khaki pants, and beige sweaters

then you see all these people trying to ape the rugged sophistication of the old WASP chads by wearing brightly colored chinos and pink polo shirts. the modern dudebro outfit you'll find in large frats. it just screams urban yuppie who loves to spend daddy's money. if you don't want to look like that, it's important to bear in mind the rural and (at most) suburban roots of these styles and don't let yourself turn into an urban fop s o y boy

No and I'll tell you why. Those trousers are way too slim fit and the stretching and warping make them look like pajama pants when you stand like that. Also clownshoe tier feet due to the same issue.

The norfolk looks like it's about two sizes too small, the way it hangs makes it seem like you couldn't even button it if you wanted to. In any case it's way too short both in the sleeves and skirt. If you insist on wearing it, get green cords or something to go with it, not charcoal marl sweatpants.

Jumper's solid.

Np, the trousers colour honestly depends entirely on the colours in the check, gun club checks can vary immensely. If we assume a basic rust/brown base, maroon trousers will look great, whereas if it's a lighter, tan base with some red and green in the check, you might prefer a brown trouser. Cords are a good choice either way. On the other hand, if it's a stark white/black/blue check you'll probably prefer a charcoal flannel or the like, something a bit sharper.

For the look of the guy in the pic, which is already flamboyant (Regency cravat, come on) I would probably go with the first of those options, really relax into the warm colors and maybe lighten the waistcoat from what he seems to be wearing into e.g. a tobacco brown. Also I can't stress enough that with this look you /have/ to do a white shirt, any color or pattern will look mad with that cravat.

Oh, and sorry about the slow reply, I had shit to do.

For dress socks, I wear over the calf from Marcoliani and Pantherella. I also have a few pairs from Etro, but that isn't really a sockmaker. I've heard good things about Sozzi socks but I've yet to try a pair. For more semi-dress socks, I like Corgi and New & Lingwood. I call these semi-dress because the patterns can be a little too spicy for really formal use. For these and the previously mentioned over the calf socks, I tend to buy a bunch in sales periods where they often can often be had for 50% off.

For casual socks, I really like Japanese Chup socks. Top quality stuff.

For a long time I basically dressed exactly like Goose's character from Drive, minus the autistic scorpion jacket. I would wear boots, dark jeans, a plain colored shirt underneath a denim jacket.
Lately I fell in love with prep and how good and comfortable it is.

Is there any way to integrate my boots and denim jacket into a prep style? I like both and want to continue to wear them

Try a local menswear store. Why? It's better to try clothes on instead of buying them online. It's better to support local businesses than buy online. Develop a good rapport with local providers, it will be worth it. Good luck.

That sportcoat is a size too small for you and it makes you look like you have groin gigantism. Despite what the other anons are saying it's actually not the bags that are the main problem (although I agree that you should iron them), it's that you fell for some slim-fit shit for the coat. Looking at this photo it's obvious that the gorge is too high and the skirt is much too narrow for your body (even if unbuttoned, the bottom buttonhole should overlap or lie close to that button), moreover the waist of the trouser is decently high and yet you're getting a pleb triangle.

Size up the sportcoat, get a looser cut. I actually like the color of the trousers, good spring tone.

Just had a sobering experience. I went to see a play in what I thought was acceptable clothing (jeans, tshirt, overshirt with rolled sleeves, and sneakers). I was proven incorrect. I didn't know it was possible to feel so much acute pain from being out of place, and I've been mentally kicking myself in the ass over it for the past two days. I never want to feel like that again; problem is, I'm (as you could tell by the clothing listed earlier) fashion clueless.
I did some googling and found some inspiration pics. This is one of my favorites, and I'm going to try to emulate it as I have roughly the same body. What kind of shirt, pants, and shoes would this be, and would the belt be an essential piece? Note that I know this is more of a casual piece; I want to "work my way up the scale" from casual to formal.

>> No.14184781

>>14184743
Oxford cloth button down shirt probably, but it looks sort of wrinkly so it might be linen. The pants are 5-pocket pants. The jacket is probably a Harrington. The shoes are some awful Birkenstocks, please don't wear that shit in public.

A plain brown leather belt is pretty essential, it looks goofy if you tuck in a shirt with no belt. If you really want to start with the basics then oxford shirts are good but start with light blue and white before you add more colors. Get pants in khaki and greys or blues or other basic colors before you get white. Regular chinos are slightly dressier than 5-pocket pants but 5-pocket is more similar to jeans which you may be more comfortable with, personally I don't like them.

What is the best Harrington?

Baracuta was always down on my to-grab list, but there's rumblings on the ivy style forum about how they're 50% polyester (which I found to be true), and that the QC in general has dropped in recent times.

I looked into Grenfell, which is 100% cloth and actually works out cheaper than Baracuta ($460 vs $570 AUD)

So, I have some questions:
1. Is Grenfell's house cloth actually water/wind resistant?
2. Is there any dirt on Grenfell? By all appearances they are a top notch product and actually cheaper, but I thought the same thing about Baracuta too until I looked into them.
3. Does it get any better than Grenfell?
4. If Grenfell, should I go the Golfer Jacket, or the Harrington? The Harrington has the back detail, but the Golfer doesn't have the bomber jacket esque ribbing, which I think I'm not such a big fan of.
5. What is the classic colour way for a Harrington? I like beige, and in fact already have a Ralph Lauren semi-Harrington in beige, but I almost never get to wear it because it's the same colour as my chinos. Is it actually acceptable to pair them? I wanted to get the racing green baracuta before I discovered their dirty little secret, and unfortunately Grenfell only offers fairly neutral colours. Navy?

Sorry for the long post.
