Ever since I got out of the military, I've been trying to grow my hair out to get (pic related) haircut.
It's been exactly 14 barbers, and not one got even close. Of those 14 cuts, 6 of the barbers literally said, halfway through the cut, "hey man I'm so sorry no charge for this" because they fucked it up so bad. 4 of the cuts were so bad I had to borderline shave my head down to a 3 afterwards.
It's like the universe doesn't want me to have my hair the way I want it. And it's not like I'm being picky, and don't understand that everyone's hair is different. Not one person has ever even gotten close.
After finally growing it out, and showing my last barber several pictures and angles, and explaining I've been growing my hair out for this cut, the first thing he did was scissor the top down to about 3 inches and asked "so is this short enough??"

Consider looking for someone who offers a "DevaCut" (as silly as it sounds). I (pic related) have gone to tons of different barbers and the best cut I've ever gotten was from Jessica at Infinite Salon in Portland.

The big distinguishing factor was that she did two passes, one rough pass on my dry hair, as I came in, and another with my hair wet and shaken out, such that the hair that should naturally curl together is stuck together in bundles. Then she cut each "curl bundle" indivudally, rather than doing that thing where they grab sections of hair, align against a comb, and cut.

A lot of how it looks is still up to the luck of drying / how much patience and time I have (neither attached pic is perfect, IMO), but I think I have a pretty good routine down now.

I've been wearing my hair like top the pic (that's actually the one I showed my barber at the time) for a good part of the past year.
I'm kinda getting tired of pulling it back (also, my hair likes to part itself in the middle, even with wax), so lately I've been wearing it parted to the side, like the bottom pics.
I know it looks nothing like the top pic now since the sides are so grown out, haven't really had the time/bothered to go cut it.

Everyone is telling you to get it cut because it's at an awkward in-between stage.

If you decide to keep growing it then just make sure you consider how it looks from all angles -- don't ignore how your hair might look from the back/sides etc. Missing out on that kind of balance is usually what makes hair of your type look unkempt.

Best practice would be to get short trims as you're growing it to keep the ends clean and remove splits. But that's optional. For general care I recommend to rub a few drops of oil (personally I like argan, I encourage you to try different oils and see which you like best) into the ends while your hair is damp (5-10 mins after showering). No need to do this every day. Three times a week is a good routine. Avoid applying oil to the roots because they receive a lot more natural oil than ends do.

Why the fuck does hair part so easily? If I have it long and sweep it to the side there's a clear line down the side of my head and if I have it shorter and wear it forward it always ends up parting at my crown and sorta falling either side of my head eventually.
