Power rangers are cool but ok.
You need to at least wear a long sleeved jacket, helmet and gloves. Go for a jacket color that contrasts with your bike like a lightish brown and a non vibrant 1 color helmet that isn't sharp looking in shape (no visor maybe) and some dark or neutral jeans.

According to IIHS, 40% of crashes are single vehicle, 60% are with another vehicle. The safest year were the mid-90s, and deaths have almost tripled since then. Most people dying now are older riders who tend to ride big, loud Harleys. I know a few, am related to a few, and they tend to be stupid as fuck. The bikes the almost died on are huge engine touring bikes and crotch rockets. Touring guy was drunk, mean, his eyes were bad due to age, and we wore minimal equipment. No helmet, jacket, boots and chaps. He got into a wreck and it fucked him up proper. Leather alone is shit. The other guy is fat, young, and zips around on the highway on this crotch rocket. Looks like a bald bear propelled by his own farts. He's not gotten into any accidents, but he's still a retard.
For the time of day, night fall to midnight are the worst times.

The human body is basically a series of tubes and joints. If you can shield the joints and extremities, you tend to be fine. So, you're going to need
>helmet
>kneepads
>gloves
>boots
>elbow pads

You can wear the elbow kit under the jacket if you're self concious about it, and store your knees on the bike. As long as your jacket and boots are leather, they tend to be good Go with full gloves, not that fingerless shit.

So go slow, be defensive - not offensive to others, don't drink, don't drive at night if you can held it, and don't be a fat old retard on a harley.

Thick leather jacket and workwear-esque pants is about as much protection as you can get on a bike. Obviously helmet and boots.

ps - of the gear, if you're worried about gear as fashion, worry about boots. All of it just comes right off, but taking off your boots is dumb. Don't worry about the rest, because it's better to safe than dead. I was doing yard work only yesterday, and a thorn went right through my gloves. Leather might be scrape resistant to an extent, but it peirces all the same.

In total honesty, a 50cc scooter. You're going to go only 30-40mph, but they're very cheap [$700], easy to use, your area may have relaxed moped laws, cheaper to insure, and they get better mileage than virtually any other vehicle. You probably aren't going to drop it, but if you do, walk backwards to lift it, and it'll probably be fine. If you don't like it, sell it, and upgrade. If you find bikes aren't for you, sell it and count it as a lesson.
plus, women fucking love them.

If you can manade it, consider a leather vest under your jacket. Most of motorcycle injuries used to be head/neck based, but since the helmet laws started to spring up, those injuries have shifted to the lower body, and to a lesser extent ot the back and shoulders. Your feet and ankle bones are delicate as hell. Conchos, while they might make you look like a rhinestone cowboy, can be helpful of you get road contact. The metal created a distance between the pavement and your body. I think there's concho fitted straps which wrap around the ankle of a pre-existing boot. You could even make your own if you want to go that route.
Remember to get books that are tight, and lace, buckle or zip. No slip ons! Those are coming off the second you twist.
A leather vest can be save your spine. Your abdominal/oblique area isn't in so much danger due to the way the body is just reluctant to bend backward. The fat old retards will leave their vests open to show case where their abs used to be once upon a time, and that's stupid. Leather might be tough, but it folds, and if you give it a chance, it will flop over. Buckle, button or zip the vest closed.

Consider thrifting for a jacket. A friend got a Schoff bros. A2 repro for $8 a few years ago. Shit's goatskin and cozy.

One more thing about boots; If you're looking for style, wear brown leather. Brown just goes with so much more than black, and doesn't look like some try-hard crap. If you simply cannot find boots that are in your budget, you might consider making a try to either a saddle/horse tack shop and seeing about concho straps, or spurs [with the tails cut off later], or to the hardware store, where a length of chain can act as a substitute ankle guard if rigged right. You can use leash clapse to hold the rig as one, then secure them with lok-lite, or possibly WB weld.

For style, you can clip a gremlin bell onto your jacket. But don't clip one you've purchased onto your bike, as that one must be given to you.

You wear the best, most protective gear you can get. Don't fuck around thinking you can be cute in a tit-high denim jacket, white tshirt with holes in it and skinny jeans. The road will eat you alive and spit your bones out the other end. Youmight not get your brains smeared across the tarmac, but you will definitely lose most of your skin and some of what's underneath.

Don't fuck around. Get the right gear.

Honda Rebels and Nighthawk are 250cc bikes that are often recommended for beginners. Not the most beautiful bikes and they're starting to show their age in terms of performance/design but the engine is reliable as hell and they sell for pretty cheap on Craigslist. Aside from that, Ninja 250 is the other meme bike for cheap. 250cc is p much the smallest you'd want in the US, can't get you on the highway but good bikes to learn on and resell pretty easily.

one bit i've heard of is pocket inserts. Notice the way your joints naturally move. The outside of your elbow, your knee caps, toes, hips, butt, shoulders, hands, upper back, outside of the ankles, are all going to be the first things to get hit by pavement.
These areas are tricky to protect;
>shoulders
>butt
>upper back
Alot of good bike jakets have padded shoulders. It can look neat with a shorter jacket.Sort of 80's Akira-esque. You can sew in, or even rivet in, some extra leather. [fabric stores, thrift store wallet, taxidermy places]
Your butt is really tricky. This is wherechaps fail 100% of the time due to no butt cover. Chaps were intended to fend off sage brush and thorns, not pavement. Bikes who wear chaps instead of knees guards are idiots [aka Harley's customer base]. So, chain belts, pocket plates, are known.
Your upper back is saved by a leather yoke in the jacket.

>>14174576
the smallest you'd ever want is a 50cc scooter - which is fine for cities and suburbs. You'd not want to go 30mph on a highway as a safety issue and because it's a dick thing to do to other drivers, but they're as practicle as anything. Most of the world used 125cc. Anything over 250cc is purely for the US market. America's bike world is weird in many ways. Right now in India they buy 10 bikes for each single car, and the Honda Activa is their best seller by far.

They're all about the same, provided the configuration is the same; eg. don't compare a shell type to a full helmet with a guard. The only thing that matters is DOT certification. Never get used, and change your shield out every 9 months to 1 year. Plastic goes through constant physical change, like bending copper. The it's used, the stiffer that coper is going to be. Eventually it snaps. If your shield gets chipped, nicked, cracked, or discolored, regardless if you just bought it - change it, it's functionally broken, and if you crash, it can/will blind you.

...oh. It depends on your bike. Your want to match era to era. For the scooter design picturered here, go with the Bullitt. The retro look and bubbled visor compliment the round headlight, and overall profile that most people associate with France/Italy in the 60s, and Vespa.
If you've a standard bike, get take a hard look at the seat, light, and overall look. The scooter picturered here is very modern, and would compliment the lanesplitter.
If need be, you could paint the helmet to maych the bike, but that would be decorative. If need be, go with white or seafoam, not standard black. A white helmet goes with anything due to being stand alone elment, esp. a brown perfecto.

I was using the scooters as depictors of design within time periods. Have you considered a open-face with a brow rim? Pair it with goggles and a face cover [eg. scarf], and it would match the bike really well. You're not going to get the same protection, but if it's aesthetic you're chasing, that'll do it.

Am I too much of a faggot and should stay out of the scene if I want to get into bikes because of Akira?

Nah. Just don't be a faggot. Asking in this thread is not a good start.

not at all. there are like niches within overall bike culture. They include;
- harley riders; retired, obese, sometimes lucked into money, chip on shoulder, dumb as a spool. They tend to join bike clubs.
- motor sports; younger, hardly anyone over 25. Not much for conversation.
- scooter people; probably the most knowledgable, calm.
- vintage riders; when motor sports people grow up but still have money.

We all get our feet wet somehow. Akira was like 1980 something, and horrifying. That's deeper than alot of rider's introductions get. Depending on your niche, or even if you have a niche at all or even seek a niche, you might not socialize with other riders that much. It's variable, but one thing you're not going to find useful is seeking other people's opinions about your thought process.
