Went to Schramberg, just a .5 hour drive from where I live. It was on display for retail (497 €) but the lady granted a 20% discount so I totalled at just below 400 €. That's cheaper than anywhere on Google shopping so it's fine.

(I was two months late to cop the Meister Telemeter for <1k. They sold it below 1k during Christmas time)

It's a nice looking watch, I like those blued hands. Though it's a dress watch, I'd want a sportier, more rugged watch as my daily wear, only watch, but that's me. Also it's a bit pricy, in my opinion.

>> No.14165421

Stowa makes quality stuff I think. From what I know, the finish on their movement is good so don't cheap out on the movement finish. They also heat treat their blued screws and hands as opposed to just painting them like other brands at that price point.
Although a few anons on /wt/ have been spamming lately that their cases were made in china and finished in germany. If you care about that stuff, you might want to rethink. But to be fair, it's very difficult to find watch companies that don't import from china at that price point.
I would also recommend checking out sinn and damasko, but I don't think they make marine style watches.
Personally I never owned a stowa, but I used to own a steinhart flieger. While the construction is solid, the gold colour coating that they use for the movement fades after two years. But stowa is way better than steinhart so there shouldnt be a problem.

I don’t get why people recommend stuff like stowa. It’s like over 1 grand for an ETA movement right? No complications, and shitty water resistance that won’t withstand anything other than light rain for muh heritage.

If you’re thinking about spending that much why not just save up for a used or new Rolex/omega/GS and get something cheaper to hold you over until then?

And also wtf does finishing the movement mean? Like can any of you explain what goes into that process?

Honestly watches as a hobby is pretty shit now that I think about it. Like if you browse the front page of reddit right now you see some fag who owns some shitty seiko (no hate on seiko) and a 2001 POS jaguar because you KNOW he’s a consumerist whore who wants to look cool but doesn’t make more that like $45k a year. Good luck fucking dumb fat chicks for the rest of your life.

Also there was some kid who spent $30k on a patek and if you look into it he’s 22 and makes like $100k MAX. Like yeah I could blow off saving for retirement or a house too and buy one of those after a year but Jesus that would be a dumbass move.

I'm pretty sure that this is the watch on the market today that I want the most, the only problem I might or might not have with it, is that along the way it might become "outdated" or "out of fashion" somehow, because of some newer design on that dial. On the other side, Patek's Nautilus has those horizontal patterns too, and that one is never "out of fashion". What do you think? Can you wear an AT with this design for many decades to come?

>> No.14165502

>>14165496

While I like the design, I do feel like it will look quite outdated in a decade or so. This is one of the core problems of Omega : they don't have any good designs in their repertoire besides the Speedmaster.

The Nautilus is exempt from being outdated because it's a one of a kind piece.

Not sure what you mean by that, you can say that about AT too. I guess if Omega stuck with that very same design then it would become more timeless eventually. Maybe it's in our heads, we see updates to a design or entire changes to a design, and then in our heads the last one is "outdated". If they do not change it, then it will not seem outdated but rather timeless? Maybe I'm onto something? What do you think?

I mostly agree with you on this, that people who overspend on watches compared to their own net worth looks pretty dumb. I'm kinda confused on some of your points tho:

>you see some fag who owns some shitty seiko (no hate on seiko) and a 2001 POS jaguar because you KNOW he’s a consumerist whore
Do you mean Seiko is too expensive for that guy earning $45k? I think most seiko watches are pretty affordable unless you buy GS?

>I don’t get why people recommend stuff like stowa. It’s like over 1 grand for an ETA movement right? No complications, and shitty water resistance that won’t withstand anything other than light rain for muh heritage.
First of, ETA is great btw, and the realibility is worth the money for sure. I think you are dead wrong/ignorant in calling ETA out as a negative thing to put inside a watch.
Water resistance on those are just the same as other watches are they not? If I'm wrong about that then I guess I will agree, a watch should at least have 30m resistance imo, preferably 50m or more.

I don’t think seiko is too expensive, it was a jag branded seiko and the jag he owned was the equivalent of an average dude buying a used Porsche boxter or leasing a cheaper Maserati to look cool. Just hating on that guy and guys like that who tend to be into luxury watches.

Nothing wrong with ETA, just that there seem to be better values with the same movement like another poster mentioned above. I think the marine series OP posted has intentionally bad water resistance to be period accurate.

I legitimately don’t know what finishing an outsourced movement means. I just started learning about mech watches because my dad gifted me one recently. Wasn’t sure if anyone really knew what it meant or if it was some sort of marketing hoo-ha

>I legitimately don’t know what finishing an outsourced movement means.
Movement finishing means how it's crafted to look good. Some movements are barely finished at all, and they will look like a very basic movement with nothing much to look at but the basic engineering of it, made in a facory with little to none handcrafting. Then there are movements that are finished more nicely, still done mostly by machines and without much handcrafting if any. These sort of finishes can be somewhat nice, or even pretty damn great (after all machines are able to finish a movement quite well if the producers want them to). Then there are movements that are finished by both machines and hand, they tend to look even better because the human element is in the details of that finish. And then there are movemnts on the extreme end that are pretty much 100% handfinished. They tend to look the best. The better finished a movement is, the nicer it is and also the more worth it is to the consumer. It is also obviously more expensive to produce due to all the manhours spent on producing it.

Yeah it's a very simple concept to grasp, and that's what people talk about when they larp about how well finished a movement is, but also very simplified in my explaination. On the topic of handfinished movemens though, honestly I have thought about this and I don't know if I think an enitely handfinished movement is worth 30 or 50k usd. Sure the hours spent on it make it a more pricy object to produce, but its actual worth as a completed product is what you are willing to pay for it. I mean, the difference between that and a partly handfinished movement costing 6 or 10k, is not that big to your eye, maybe you won't be able to see it at all. You can look at it through a loupe and start to notice of course, and use an even bigger loupe if you want to really look at the finer details in the 100% handfinished movement. But... is that worth as much to you as the cost of producing it was? Not really (to me). How about just getting a really damn great finished movement to your naked eye and pay 1/4 of the price instead? I think I will opt for the latter, unless I become super rich and don't give a shit about cost anymore. But that's just me, personally.

There's been a shift, previously watchmakers strived to make watches lighter and thinner, because it showed off their mastery of the craft. This solar tuna ticked all the boxes I was looking for in an analogue quartz watch I could wear in a workshop environment and not worry about banging around. This will be doubly so when I upgrade the shroud to stainless steel.

>>14166467
It's the stock bracelet and clasp. I'd been planning on replacing them since I have a straight end strapcode 22mm oyster kicking around and good milled clasps, but the stock bracelet fits me so perfectly that I'm just going to leave it and only upgrade the shroud to brushed stainless.

I see many of the larpers tried to tell you what not to buy. Surely they do not lie when they say that the usual suspects of Rolex are those most people prefer, surely JLC is better than Cellini, but that does not mean you need to prefer them. You buy the watch YOU think is best, and buying cellini is not a bad choice at all. Quite expensive, but if you got the money and you think this watch is the one for you, then go for it! Anyway, you may want to try on some watches first. If you only saw this watch in pictures then I think there is still a way for you to go along the road of choosing which watch to own.

>I believe it's a feature not a fault and here's why. I have two Grand Seiko bracelet watches and both have some wiggle room on the end link fit. I believe that this is a practical choice as much as an aesthetic one, as it facilitates easy fitting of the bracelet. Other people have commented upon Grand Seiko bracelet end links not fully filling the lug space and my belief is that like many Swiss brands, it's an aesthetic choice to allow the wearer to appreciate the form of the lugs. Seiko have demonstrated their expertise on the fit and finish of other aspects of the watch and could if they wish have had a much tighter tolerance and an end link that sits level from lug top to lug top à la Rolex.

Jesus Christ GS owners are delusional. The quote is from a watchuseek thread about the lug gaps in GS.
