Jewelry's value should only ever be the cost of materials plus craftsmanship. The materials are precious metal commodities after all, we know what their worth.

This thread reminded me of a coworker of mine who is getting married soon. He already wears his ring and it's something black, i think it's plated black tungsten with a red carbon fiber inlay.

I'm not going to count the shitty fad metals so popular with a specific crowd these days.

Gold or Platinum?
If gold, then which alloy?
Basically, it comes down to your complexion.
Some people look better with the yellowy golds (yellow or rose), and others look better with silvery metals ("white" gold, or platinum).

If yellow gold, what karat?
Closer you get to 24 the more yellowy orange the metal looks. This may or may not suit your skin tone.

If white gold, and if it's not some proprietary fancy alloy that I've been told only exists in a few very expensive jewelry houses, then all you're seeing is the Rhodium plating.

You buy a gold ring, and because white gold naturally looks like piss colored metal, a lustreless, dull silvery gold (except for the aforementioned special blends), it comes rhodium/palladium plated to give it that chrome look it's missing.
Platings don't last. They always come off with wear. A lifetime ring like a wedding ring has to be continually re-plated.

If pink/rose/red/russian gold, then it depends on how "rosy" you want it.
The further you get from 24kt, the more "reddish" the alloy becomes due to increased copper content, with 9ct gold being very coppery compared with the rosy tinged 18.

IMO, if you really can only look good with the silver metals, avoid white gold. It's basically just plated pissedmetal.
Platinum is the choice for you.

I've heard that good looking unplated white gold exists, as I know that Rolex use them for some of their models but their alloy uses platinum and some other metals not commonly used to create a white gold alloy, hence why those rolex models don't need plating yet look like what people think white gold is supposed to look like, and not what it usually looks like unplated (ugly).

I think Tiffany might use a platinum alloy, un-plated white gold but I've never checked.
