Well, you are an exception. But even for you a 38mm dial watch would fit perfectly. It's a lot easier to pull off an undersized watch than to pull off an oversized one.
Also, smaller watches are nicer to look at because of better proportions, imo.
Great example is a sinn that i saw recently. I hate sinn and but when i saw their 40mm crhono, i didn't want to puke for the first time.
Never understood what was so off about sinn watches, but now i do, it's the size that ruins proportions for me.

Is it good/okay to wear a dress watch combined with casual wear? Imagine something like pic related, but combined with a plain T-shirt/other type of shirt, some slim black pants and normal sneaker-ish shoes?

I know that generally the rule is: metal band for casual wear and dress watches for formal wear. Just curious if I'm mistaken and/or if there are exceptions.

Apologies to those who've seen this kind of question before, but I'm still narrowing down my choices and I came across one in person in a shop and I'm curious.

For the past 6 months I've been thinking seriously about getting a pocket watch. Waltham and Elgin always come up, but I can't find much literature at all on what is worth going after. Recently, I came across a Waltham in a shop that I really liked, but I haven't had a chance to look at it close up, or to see the condition of the movement.

So, to the pocket-watch Anons who know:

Is there any reason to avoid vintage Waltham pocket watches (open face)? Are Elgin's really just a step up from them?

My plan is to only get 1 pocket watch, and I've been recommended the Railroad grade ones from Elgin. It all makes sense, and I can find them on Chrono24 no problem. Basically I'm just looking for any ideas you Anons might have.

Incidentally, I'm not opposed to getting an Omega pocket watch, or any other one. It's just that the Elgin ones seem to be from the period when people still used them for 'accurate' timekeeping. I know it probably won't be within COSC or anything like that....but I don't really want a pocket watch from the 1950's either...it seems wrong somehow.

Anyway, thanks in advance, and I look forward to your thoughts.

They're fun watches, very easy to customise. The accuracy does vary between individual units, mine is very accurate to the point where I don't re tune it for two weeks and it's still on time. Only downside is they're absolute scratch magnets, however they're soft enough you can buff the scratches out with swatch, or even toothpaste and a cloth.

prices on SKXes are pretty steady, you might be able to save twenty bucks here or there with some sale, but there's never going to be a huge blockbuster sale on them.

In terms of quality, the SKX pretty much offers toughness, with very little in terms of fit and finish (e.g. painted indices, instead of applied). Its movement, the 7S26, is seiko's cheapest automatic, and lacks the features and fineness of those of other manufacturers. Also, most 7S26s these days are made in malaysia, if you don't want to pay the premium for a japanese-made model. It does have a nice caseback, though.

Really, the SKX is the most tooly of dive watches at its price point, and you're not going to find anything else from Seiko that fits into its particular niche. Their other offerings are going to cost more, and tend to be nicer, better, more upmarket, and less tool-esque than the SKX.

Each series have minute differences with them from the number of tapisserie squares to the position of the AP logo with the AP @ 6 being more valuable. The tooling for the Venus 175 was sold directly to the Chinese Govt in the 1960's due to their intent on creating a pilot's chronograph. They simply set up shop with the same equipment used to create the original Venus 175, and started producing watches with their own branding and so forth. The modern Seagull iteration of the Venus 175 is essentially identical, though it'll have some typical Chinese modifications, the purpose of which is to reduce costs in production.

It's not a chink copy in the way that we think of chink copies (IPhone vs. Chinaphone); they didn't reverse engineer anything. As I have said in the past, if the movement is well oiled and regulated, it should perform as any other Venus 175 does.

In terms of merit over the usual 7750...those are two radically different movements. In general, the Venus 175 is column wheel, manual wind. The 7750 is a cam operated, automatic wind chronograph that can be manufactured to COSC tolerances in terms of performance. Also, it can handle a day/date complication, which as far as I'm aware, the Venus 175 couldn't (though I think it could be modified to have a 3 register instead of the normal 2).

The two are entirely different beasts, but the 7750 is obviously better technologically.
