This thread is about the appreciation of watches, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a functioning timepiece.

Is the strap width for the casio F105W the same as it is for the F91W (18mm)? It should by all logic be 18mm, but Amazon's product listing says its 22mm, but that sounds wrong to me.

This is my watch, I love it. It suits my ethos and aesthetics, and no one in my office thought about rocking it. They’re either ignorant about fashion or tryhard hipsters with DW-like watches. I’m like, here I am, a non tryhard, with non tryhard music taste but still patrician. Like, I look like I don’t have to tryhard to be cool, cus I’m already cool and chill without having to think much about it. But I’m also not ignorant about fashion. I wear regular fit shirt, slim black pants (cropped), and black sneakers. Usually, the higher the shoes, the higher I would roll the pants. The bottom of the pants shouldn’t stack or cover the top of the shoes. So imagine rolling the pants and wearing high top black chuck taylor, black pants and shoes, with buttoned shirts that has unique color. Nice. Not too tryhard, not too snobby, but enough to make people categorize me as one of the cool people with cool solid non tryhard taste.

Yet I still have no friend and am a virgin.

you can get one for way under 20 bucks, they will last, are watertight, batteries last, they don't have a light and the buttons are hard to access unless you are a chick or a kid or n posession of a pen. It's gonna have the usual digi clock functions as well as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Nothing you couldn't come up with on your own. It's kind of obsolete since smart phones make any calculation much easier. On the other hand it is really cheap, looks interesting if you are into the alien movies and lasts on you/disposable enough to wear it all the time.

But be aware that npc's will start asking stupid questions about it.

"What is that"
"What are the buttons for"
"Why do you have that"
You know, just the most basic NPC questions.
I mean don't be fooled by the fact that it looks like a calculator watch from like 10 meters away, they won't puzzle that together on their own.

I personally hate to be that guy explaining a gadget and like I said it's kind of obsolete by now.

But that's just my personal experience and I'm really allergic to pointless conversations.
It's a good, cheap casio after all.

Not that anon, but it's happened to me twice with different watches.

Both times it happened while they were on leather straps. If something tugs on the strap at an angle hard enough it can pull the spring bar far enough to pop out.

Can't imagine it happening if the watch is on a steel bracelet though.

It depends on your interests, but most of the popular sport watches have a lot of replacement parts floating around on the grey market. If you get a complete movement then you just need a handful of parts: dial, hands, case, crown, etc.

It doesn't take that much skill or experience to put a watch together, just watch some YouTube videos of people servicing watches. You just need patience and the ability to deal with some small parts. The hardest part is probably fitting the hands perfectly but there are tools to help (which I never use lol)

Pic related is my 50s Tudor that I gradually acquired parts for. People would call it fake but an original of this reference is a six figure watch, radioactive and probably beat to hell. So I'll take my fake that I can actually wear every day, dive with, and not worry about.

Lots of people make reproduction cases and they are usually based on popular real world watches. >t. living in European state with some of the best social security on the world.
while I agree with your post, it's also important to note that the reason US social security sucks is because of defense. due to NATO/UN allies, the US basically has to be the world's policeman - and has done that for 70 years. despite expecting a couple % of GDP per member nation to be spent on defense, all but like 3 countries fail to follow this rule, and even then the ones that do so, do not add much capability to the coalition.
the reason euros can afford socialism is because they don't have the massive money furnace that is defense spending. dollars to donuts, if the EU had to defend themselves, at least 50% of that socialist shit would go right out the window. it's a shame about the US, we do deserve better social safety nets, but you fuckers don't pay your bills.

'defense' of what, is the real question.. 'Interests' is the answer, but all that does is pose more questions.
>due to NATO [allies]
If anything it's the US that always pushed for NATO. Stated by a US-lead commission, with forming a strategic block against the Ruskies in mind. Basically NATO-turf is prime tactical real estate for situating prime tactical Nukes on right on the USSR's border (and later Russian Federation)
>/UN allies,
The UN consists of almost literally every nation state or what passes as or pretends to be such. Calling them 'allies' is a stretch, even for the US.
>the US basically has to be the world's policeman
*wants
Leaving aside if it has positive effects or results, lets not pretend that there's anyone forcing the US to do anything.

>and has done that for 70 years. despite expecting a couple % of GDP per member nation to be spent on defense, all but like 3 countries fail to follow this rule, and even then the ones that do so, do not add much capability to the coalition.

While I agree that everyone should be meething the 2% norm (we're currently at 1,2% or some shit IIRC), even if all members DID meet that 2%, the bulk of NATO spending would still be done by the US, more because that's just what the US government does than for any other reason.

>the reason euros can afford socialism is because they don't have the massive money furnace that is defense spending.

Can't speak for all euros, but the main reason the Netherlands could fund it is because we sold natural gas. But that's being stopped as we speak, because earthquakes. Oops.

>if the EU had to defend themselves, at least 50% of that socialist shit would go right out the window.
Remember that it's socialism that NATO aimed to defend against

Yeah I'm not going to reply point by point in a thread for talking about watches, but I'm a classics major and I've read Adam Smith. His ideas are a great way to organize an efficient society and bring the standard of living up enormously, but it's not a permanent solution and the problems we see it causing, which pretty drastically affect quality of life in myriad ways (not just poverty), are only going to get worse. Which is exactly what Marx says, by the way.

Ran out of characters, but I cannot emphasise enough just how obscenely high taxes are in this country. 21% sales tax, 30-40-50% progressive scaled income tax, 78,5 cents tax per liter of gasoline. (fixed amount. and that 21% sales tax earlier? also applied to that part of gas price.. over 50% of the actual price of gas is taxes).

I could go on, but I'm feeling sleepy all of a sudden tbqh.. tl;dr: If you think Euros are living cheap and easy due to US defense spending, you're sadly mistaken.

Society deems things to be virtuous or not based on our cultural character which is largely shaped by the laws. 500 years ago usury, lending money at interest, and avarice were legitimate crimes. They have now come to be the main tenets or our economic system, and thus individual virtues.

The "state of nature" is obviously based on self interest and the point of human government is to remove us from that state, so I believe it should do so as much as possible instead of merely translating "survival of the fittest" into an economic arena, which is what global capitalism has done.
