That said, I wish I was the owner of a bigwig company so I could send out rejection letters to these posers saying, "We're sorry, but wearing a fake watch shows a level of dishonesty which would not fit in with our company culture. Thank you for taking the time to interview"

hello, dont know much about watches, asked over at /diy/ and got sent here

I'm looking for an analog tool watch, a good hard beater that can survive years of working outdoors. I need it to be quartz, the kind you just put on every morning with no clockwork to worry or fuss over. I strongly prefer a small one, maybe 36 or 34 millimetres, with a black face. Fashion is not important.

budget around two hundred would be a real sweet spot. Thank you very much

Rolex has objectively put out beautifully designed watches, with an emphasis on ruggedness, reliability, precision, and a very masculine yet distinct aesthetics. Whereas other big names flexed their muscles on autistic and fragile complications, Rolex was meant to provide timepieces to men of action.
Obviously a great deal to its fame is due to consistent and well carried advertising endeavors.
This said, I don't like current Rolexes. The design now sucks. Prices are way too high. Older models were objectively more beautiful than current ones, with very few exceptions.

Well modern ETA movements are just as sturdy and reliable as any Rolex movement. Anybody could assemble a watch that performs like a Rolex nowadays, with less than $500.
You don't buy a Rolex today for the same reasons you'd would in the past.
Today, it's really about having a luxury timepiece that is also widely recognized by the uneducated mass. It's the brand of choice of people who like to brag about their shit among poorer folks.
Most of the ones who hate Rolex nowadays actually hate the person who usually wears it, not the watches themselves.

Need some opinions /fa/. I have in my possesion my late uncles Seiko Bell-Matic 17 Jewels. It is heavily rusted on the band, the glass is scratched, but not heavily. The watch operates but I'd assume it needs a service regardless. It does not hold a large amount of sentimental value, yet still some. It is gold, vintage, and overall a nice watch, but I am unsure if i should spend money replacing the glass, band and servicing it, will its flaws outweigh the value? I'm stumped.

Which value? Resale value? Yes, you wont sell it for a profit. Bu if you like the watch then fix it and keep it for you.

Don't change anything. Just let it service and ask what to do against the rust. For me it doesn't look like rust, only a bit and the gold plating is peeling off. Clean that up, polish the worst rust spots and wear it. Looks fun with that used aesthetic.

Do not make your hobby your profession. You most likely will end up in some mall and be miserable for your whole life, changing batteries. Do anything else, do fine mechanics if you like that and do watch servicing and reselling them on ebay and if you are good, put a camera on that fucker and make a yt channel as a side gig. I've finally got the money for the watch I want, a 90s Rolex Explorer 2. I've never seen one of these in person and any local authorized dealer near me doesn't have any of the 42mm ones in stock (shocker)

Would any of you buy something like that sight unseen from somewhere like Crown and Caliber? Would hate to spend so much money and not like the thing IRL

No more than mechanical watches as a whole.

This is about an "endgame mechanical watch", meaning the watch that gives you the peak experience of whatever the fuck it is we like about mechanical watches.

This is really about quantity vs quality.
A decently finished chrono (tons of parts) vs an extremely nicely finished three hander (few parts).

I got this as a first mechanical chrono. Nice and cheap.

I really like the case/hands/acrylic crystal. The movement is satisfying to wind and actually pretty fucking accurate, but using the chronograph beyond 30 mins stops the watch which I'm pretty sure is a fault with mine?

The dial I'm not happy with. 50% of the time you look at it, it looks gorgeous pic related. But the other 50% the light just isn't catching it right, the dial turns silvery white and the gold turns into this cheap looking and faint yellow. When this happens the watch looks pretty cheap.

But nah, fucking love it. Only weights 45 grams.

Yeah, project "aware of dogshit", motherfucker.
I like the rice bead bracelet, these are getting popular recently, also like the bezel edge, the rest is not very interesting and that thing is probably oversized like any modern watch.

>but it needs to be big when you want to dive with it
No serious diver would dive with only a mechanical watch today. They will always have a digital dive computer and this watch maybe as a backup. You can see a smaller watch just fine, gf's dad wears an old, smaller (about 38 mm) citizen diver for his recreational diving and had never any problems.
Pic unrelated, that's just some dude that refurbished a 32mm diver for his wife. That little watch looks so cute, i want it.
