I got the larger version, and I'm pleased with it. The dial has a lot of nice texture. My only issue is that its big. This picture is not mine, but its way too big on this guy's wrist, and luckily it fits within the width of my wrist, but if it were any bigger I couldn't wear it.

Dials aren't going to shrink back to vintage sizes. It's easier and cheaper for brands to manufacture and service larger movements so they have zero incentive to change. Despite what you may think it's also why most womens watches are quartz.

Also, It's not any easier to service "larger" movements, they are and have been pretty consistent in sizes for quite a while now, the movement for a 36mm rolex fits a 44mm rolex, eta-base movements go in hundreds of watches in different sizes, so what's you point?
