At least someone who is not a braindead consumer goy. I wonder why good reps are not discussed more on wt.
This board is somewhat redpilled about the watch (((industry))) and their overpriced trash, yet nobody has the balls to pull a good fake watch off.
As long as you tell people that it's a fake you can wear all you want and those people that hate you because of a fake watch, well they are retarded anyway.

Good article. Also about fashion watches in general. Take Longines for example, they sell millions of watches in a year and are thriving as a business. When people complain about them not being what they used to be they are just melancholic. Longines is still alive because they adapted, and even then they have their Heritage line for which that beautiful CEO with the bushy eyebrows has to fight with the pencilpushers at the financial department every time they want to release something beautiful to preserve and remember their history.

The good thing about buying a vintage datejust is that the value is very unlikely to go anywhere but up. I'm not trying to convince you to spend money on something if you really feel like it wouldn't be the right decision for you but in theory you could buy a vintage datejust and if after 6 months you're regretting the decision you could most likely sell it for what you paid for it.
It's certainly a more sound decision objectively that a lot of other things you could buy for 3-4k.
I once bought a car for 4500 that barely got driven, then had a bunch of mechanical faults and got parked. After I'd moved onto other cars and it sat for a few years I sold it for $200. I lost 4300 bucks on that car (fuel and maintenance not even included). Do I regret it? Strangely, no. If I had have bought a Datejust instead could I have got more than $200 back? Yes

I'm not sure whether this is more about not being afraid to buy a Rolex or to not overpay for shitbox cars.

Fortis has neat history. Other than that they are basically the same as the other 100 swiss brands in their price range (See: Tissot, Mido, Hamilton, Certina, Glycine etc.)
Decent quality, ETA movements, you know the drill.

As for water resistance plenty of watches are up to 100m water resistant without screw down crowns. Your dad is either misinformed or a cuck for high end brands and trying to make Fortis look bad
As long as you arent at significant depth or subjecting the watch the significant pressure, and you dont pull the crown out while its underwater its fine

The Sinn 240ST GZ caught my eye and was the only watch I wanted but I saw a youtube review of it, and the tide complication seems kinda fucking dumb if there is no lock. I'll have to set the tide every day for it to be accurate and any twist of the crown will move it.
It's not like you have to be super accurate on tides or anything but if I'm gonna spend that much on a watch I want it to make sense.

Oh yeah I'd look for a screw down if you're surfing. Moving water = higher pressure and surfing is basically chasing moving water. Also you're more likely to accidentally bump the crown out.
The BC3 looks pretty good, the Sinn isn't to my taste personally. I'd maybe check out some of Glycine's watches (specfically the combat sub) for a swiss tool watch that isn't massively expensive and has good water resistance

How are watches a hobby?
Any richfag with millions could just buy a couple of luxury watches worth tens of thousands and he'd be considered a better collector and a better watch enthusiast.
Even if I learned how to service watches and knew all the history of all the brands the man putting the most money on watches still "wins" in this "hobby", how is this real?
This "hobby" seems no different than those autistic card games we played when we were kids, it doesn't matter how well you play, you just have to buy hundreds of cards to have a decent deck.

Why does it matter who 'wins'
You seem stuck on the idea that watch collecting is a competition. That somehow anyone gives a fuck how much your watch cost, and if you have more valuable watches you are a better collector.

Truth is no one gives a fuck. Watch guys know how much your watch cost and don't care because most of them will like an assortment of both expensive and cheap watches, and normies don't know how much your watch cost in the first place.
Your argument is flawed from the start. Me, and I'm sure many others, would be just as interested in the Lange on one dudes wrist as the cheap shit vintage Seiko penis quartz on the next.

USSR and communist chinese watch collectors are a community that exist, and 99% of these watches, even the ones that are sought after, are all very cheap to obtain.

your argument is like saying that people who buy a shit load of rare supercars will "win" over the guy who built up a honda to make 700hp, and its true for the mainstream, but for enthusiasts, probably not.

Rolex REALLY need to step up their game.
Their watches are unironically so basic in terms of finishing that it's getting extremely hard tell real from fake.
This is simply because pretty much all finishing is done by automated machine, so there's not much apparent quality left.

Rolexes sports watches were never all that intricately finished, but at least they had a bevel here and there.
