OP you can't develop your own style without experimenting, don't listen to this retard, you have to experiment a lot, if you're really afraid of buyer's remorse, I'd recommend thrifting, you might make a few mistakes if you don't have a good fashion sense yet but it will pay off, you'll get good looking, often "unique" clothes and you'll be free to create fits without breaking the bank, and once you have enough pieces and a little bit of experience, you'll find yourself mixing and matching and creating something quite personal, and you'll see that it is very rewarding.

Also, like another poster pointed out, lurk a lot, and start paying real attention to what people outside are wearing, figure out what it is you like, what you don't like, go into clothing stores, even the ones with the outrageous prices, look at what's in them and find ideas, the more proactive in your observations you are, the sooner you'll develop a good fashion sense and be more likely to make purchases you won't regret and develop a more personal style by mixing the different concepts that you like and that you think look good on you. Just remember the most important thing: BE CONFIDENT. If you really feel stupid in an outfit, don't go out with it, but despite this, don't hesitate to go outside your comfort zone every once in a while, if you're not sure about something, wear it around the house for a day, and look at yourself in the mirror often, that helps me a lot.
