Where's a niBBa supposed to get a 6538 Sub homage for that vintage Bond aesthetic? All the various Sub lookalikes you see on eBay are patterned after more recent models.
I've considered getting a Black Bay homage and swapping the hands, but there has to be some option that doesn't involve modding.

I get the thing with the tickign complication. But why would you care if somebody tought that your super thin mechanical watch was quartz? If you like watches you buy it for yourself and not to be complimented like a pleb.

it's a sound assumption. The CEH is from 1967 seiko had been working on quartz watches since 1958 and released it in 1969. You'd have to be pretty dumb to think seiko didn't have any prototypes before 67.

The last time I wore a wristwatch, I was still in elementary school. I mostly stopped wearing it because it was uncomfortable, but I also didn't like how the black kids would constantly ask me if I "had the time," despite there being large format wall clocks in every single classroom and hallway. When I started high school, I got my first cell phone and the watch went straight into my junk drawer.

I am now 33 years old and reevaluating my EDC. As my smartphone has increased in size, I've found that a lot of times it can be pretty hard to extract it from my pocket just to check the time. Sometimes, also, I would rather not show off a $400 smartphone in public (again, this is 100% because of black people).

What is your rationale for wearing an archaic piece of technology on your wrist that is duplicated in your smartphone's basic functions? Pic somewhat related. I sometimes get the feeling that people who wear watches in 2019 must have deviated somewhere alone the correct path of human evolution.

>What is your rationale for wearing an archaic piece of technology on your wrist that is duplicated in your smartphone's basic functions? Pic somewhat related. I sometimes get the feeling that people who wear watches in 2019 must have deviated somewhere alone the correct path of human evolution.

What's the rationale behind any non-essential consumer decision? Because you like it and it develops your personal brand, distinguishing you from other people. This is the fashion board, right? Watches are one of the few accessories acceptable for men to wear. We have far fewer options to express our interests and tastes than women.

On some level watches signal wealth and professionalism. People trust and respect professionally-attired, well-groomed people more even if they themselves don't value those things.

They are also advantageous on a practical level. You have to fish your smartphone out of your pocket as >>13987021 says, and they have to be charged constantly. They are at risk of being dropped, left behind or stolen every time you take it out.

rubbish, I wear anything anywhere. Wearing a daytona or a sub to the lecture hall is perfectly fine and it shows you have worked hard and treated yourself to something nice.

It is also money in the bank so don't be afraid to buy a Rolex. YOUR MONEY STAYS MAN or even better you MAKE money.

I also think Ceramic Daytonas look nicer than preceramics, this is the only exception to the rule because I usually like pre-ceramic Rolex range.

At the technical level, Micro Artist Studio is definitely superior at finishing compared to Lange.

Compare the flatness of Lange's anglage to the rounded fullness of MAS's anglage.

Good morning wt

The new junghans Meister is a watch with both a haq movement and radio sync. It has a map on the dial with the current radio stations (I suppose it might become out of date if wwvb shuts down). It has an independent time zone adjustment that includes the half hour and quarter hour time zones. The hand motion is fairly unique - the second hand is advanced twice per second, and the minute hand advances from one minute to the next only at the top of each minute. Obviously, it has a fly-by-wire crown. The quartz movement is supposed to be good to 8spy without radio sync, though the mechanism by which it does that is a little obscure. Junghans has confirmed the watch is not thermocompensated. Instead, it has an unusual 32670hz crystal and an 8-minute inhibition window. I'll be testing it and my other haq pieces in my incubator soon for a couple months so we'll see how it does with its radio sync turned off.

I’m pretty much echoing Dufour’s sentiments on the matter.
Reputation and heritage are built upon craftsmanship, and much of the Swiss watch industry is resting on its laurels in this respect, while the Germans and Japanese are forging ahead.
That said, I personally also buy into the Swiss/European cachet aspect, and the very top of the spectrum is still largely Swiss.
At the 4-10k price range however, Grand Seiko is largely without peer in the craftsmanship craftsmanship department, and Seiko’s top watchmaking division is very much up there with the absolute finest in key respects.

Nah, took one or two in the boutique but it felt awkward when I did so they were massively rushed. I went with the intention of getting a Master Moon, or at least confirming I’d buy one at a discount later on if the opportunity presented itself, but I have thic wrists so it just didn’t work. Tried on this Chronograph and it was real nice though.

I’m the guy you keep arguing with but let’s agree on one point, they have good finishing for the price but they lack prestige. At the end of the day there’s Seiko on the dial.

Pilots and mirrors.

An extract from the “Aviator Watches” section of Reinhard Meis’s excellent book on the watchmakers of Dresden indicates that the backwards seconds on the inner part of the dial meant that they could be read in a mirror when mounted in navigation equipment. When flying by waypoints, as pilots had to do in the second world war, being able to read the seconds accurately was crucial.

Being able to measure the seconds accurately was more important, of course, and the calibre 48.1 movement used in this watch has a history all of its own, having been developed specifically to Wehrmacht specifications that required accuracy to within less than one second per day! It also has a stop-seconds function that was at the time patented by Junghans, which meant that A. Lange & Söhne had to pay its German competitor a licence fee so that it could produce these urgently needed watches.

Good finishing is where the prestige comes from.

But you're right that a European name and house has a certain cachet, it's where watchmaking as we know it arose, at a time when Europe was at the pinnacle of world domination, thanks in no small part to timekeeping in the form of marine chronometers.
As a Euro, this is part of my heritage.

That said, the Japanese have themselves a very long and distinguished history of eminent craftsmanship, see pic for instance.
Plus, the Japanese have so far resisted the call to mass immigration as one of the very few affluent countries in the world, so I'd wear a high-end Seiko with pride as a badge of aspiration.
