Reminder that the Grand Seiko movement in pic related is the work of a micro studio staffed by 10 men who only put out 30 watches in a year.
That's more "micro" than the likes of Kari Voutilainen.

This kind of movement finishing is the absolute pinnacle of haute horology, up there with Philippe Dufour (who helped train these 10 men).

Even the undersides of the screws on this movement are finished.

>>13982111
By comparison, Lange movement finishing is much more ornate, but clearly inferior at a technical level.

Compare the flatness of the mainplate anglage to the plump, rounded fullness of this GS: >>13982111

Don't get me wrong, Lange's finishing is still magnificent, especially considering the often intricate structure and sheer magnitude of parts to be finished.
But when you look at the technical merit of the finissage, the Grand Seiko is clearly a step up.

One of the guys from the 10-man studio who made this >>13982111
was asked how much time he spends finishing a single screw.
He said "45 minutes, 30 minutes on the top and 15 minutes on the underside of the screw head".
He was then asked "why the underside? Nobody will see it", he replied "I see it".

And you can change the battery yourself. If you just flip the battery over, you can get another year of juice out of it since it tends to accumulate on one side if you don't flip it over.

It's called having a design language.
Look into the GS history, their design language has been a key element for Grand Seiko since the very early years.

Once you know what to look for, the individual case design categories are identifiable from a mile away, like the 44GS cases.

Grand Seiko was always a separate entity from Seiko. Always.

And it was always deliberately kept small to keep the quality high.
Meanwhile Rolex keeps finding new ways to automate their production, even ceasing the application of any kind of case bevel like you still find on vintage Rolexes. See pic.

It's not hard to believe he's paid by Squale and some of the smaller brands he always talks about. In his recent state of the collection video he spent 5 seconds talking about his rolex sub and 5 minutes talking about some shitty microbrand. It was a totally unoriginal design and looked like a $50 mall watch but insisted he was "having lots of fun with it". Off camera I bet he just wears his sub

These aren't the kinds of things you spot right away. There's a whole watch to take in before you start looking for print defects.
This is the kind of flaw you notice by accident, and then can't get out of your head for the rest of your ownership period.

I have some questions sorry if it sounds weird. Can you just go to an AD and ask them to look at watches? Do you know the AD or have you purchased from them? How closely do they let you look? Can you ask them to let you look at any watch?

>> No.13985351

>>13985337
Unless you look like a slob I guess any AD is willing to show you a watch. Otherwise they wouldnt be selling a lot of watches. Yes, I do dress well and present myself in general politely, so Ive never had anything wierd at ADs. Sometimes I even tell them about my powerlevel in watches, and they just stare like deer. Funny. Yesterday I was looking at the Bambino, and i told the salesperson that Orient is owned by Seiko, she got really flustered and thought I meant it as a bad thing lol

>> No.13985360

So you don't already have a relationship with the AD? I imagine you also go there just to look and don't buy anything, they're ok with you just looking at watches and then saying "bye"? Do you go to the same AD multiple times? Are the clerks/salespeople knowledgeable in watches or are they just there as "cashiers"?
I apologize in advance for my autism.
