My new watch, The Citizen CTQ57-0954. Took me nearly two years to find a nice used example on Yahoo Auctions Japan, but I'm happy I finally found one.

Titanium, perfect size at 37mm x 10mm, Grand Seiko -tier finishing, excellent lume, the greatest quartz caliber in the world in A660, rated +-5s/year, perpetual calendar, independently adjustable hour hand. Simply the best daily watch there is in my opinion. And the lacquer-like blue dial is gorgeous.

My friend... It doesn't seem like my posts are going through to you.. It's not really hard to understand is it. Only 6 companies make watches, the rest that you inaccurately consider to be watches is a long running gag that has been going on for centuries in this world. You technically don't own a watch unless it's one of those 6 earlier named.
A Grand Seiko, Rolex, Omega is NOT, let me reiterate, NOT a watch! I know this is hard to understand, but bare with me! I've included this easily understandable (even if the person has a learning disability, which I think might be relevant in your case) picture to understand what a watch is and what isn't a watch. This is essentially a very hard redpill to swallow, especially for supplicants and other guttersnipes of the lower class, but that doesn't make it less true does it?

Happy new year!

My good friend. I see that you have a problem understanding reality. What I first thought was laziness while writing the first posts is actually what I feared but didn't quite believe - until now. You suffer from delusions. All the mentioned manufacturers make watches. This is not a joke and I am not trying to fool you. They are all watches. Grand Seiko, Rolex, Omega all are such companies that make watches. I know this is hard for you to grasp, but let me just show you this image. It is a mechanical movement that are placed inside a metal case and will move some hands on a dial that tells you the time, and even ables you to use pushers to use it as a stopwatch. Oh gosh, if you only saw this in real life in front of you, you would believe what I'm saying, they are actually real. You can, with your own hands, hold one of them, and look at the seconds go, look at the time being told on that dial. It is a watch. I wish you would believe that it is real, and maybe, just maybe, you someday get to see it for yourself.

It's not a 'deal', it's that Chinese watches are now competitive for their price, and they will be branded at times with the commie star. This one is a reproduction of the 1963 Chinese Pilot's Chronograph, which uses the Venus 175 movement which is now only made in China.

A few anons here have one; they're fun and affordable.

They are a very underrated brand. I have the master with the blue dial and alligator strap. The conquest heritage is also nice. If vintage is your thing, Longines can be very affordable. They also have the hydroconquest divers range.

china isn't like japan. I wouldn't ever consider something built in china by a chinese company competitive unless it's a category of product that's intended to be disposable. I couldn't trust the chinese to make a reliable car engine much less something with hundreds of microscopic parts.

I understand that completely. There is a difference with this particular watch however.
1) The movement is the Venus 175, not a Chinese clone. Venus sold the tooling to make the movement directly to the Chinese govt. in the 1960s, and the only things that have changed are very small minute changes to make it cheaper to manufacture. In terms of reliability, the Venus was a workhorse that was relied upon by many brands; if you get a new 1963 chronograph, if the movement is clean and well lubricated, it will perform to the same standards.

2) The areas of question always relate to the casing of the movement and the finishing and final shipping. The bottom line is that this is where errors and problems can creep in. That's why if anyone says they are going to buy one, I always recommend that they have their watchmaker have a look at it when it arrives, so that if anything is strange they can take care of it immediately and then wear it without worrying.

3) I understand not liking the aesthetics of the watch or the communist symbols. For me, it's an historical curiosity that is (in my mind) new-old-stock. To each his own.

4) The real-world performance of mine has been very good (it's currently holding at 0.5+ per day), and I've had it over a year. I have no concerns or problems, nor do I see it as particularly unreliable. I wouldn't get it near water, but if I had a Speedy I wouldn't get that near water either, so that's that.

5) Finally, it's a column-wheel manual-wind chronograph that is under $500. There is no competition for this in this price-range, and most chronographs that are less expensive are cam operated (which isn't necessarily bad, just different and easier to manufacture). If there was a comparable movement in the same price range made by the Japanese, then I'd agree with your sentiment...but there isn't, so I'm happy with mine.

Happy New Year!

Longines I feel is moving back more into the luxury segment of watches and prices will rise sharply over the next 10 as swatch pushes Omega up in price to match rolex. Longines definitely has a unique style and place in the market as a luxury Swiss automatic watch with enviable heritage that is less than 2k

Anyone got any watch recommendations for Hedi Slimane’s style? Both dress and casual. Preferably minimalist or bauhaus style as well as being in the 100-300 usd range

I generally don't recommend watches in the 100-300 usd range. Not because I'm a snob or anything, but because I firmly believe that the quality is quite poor in that range. 300 is bordering OK, but it will almost always feel and look like a cheap watch. And that is not enjoyable.
