If you want specifically Rolex then Bob's Watches is pretty good, I bought from them and was very happy. The prices are mostly fair but a little higher than what you could maybe find on ebay, but it seems a lot less risky to me.

Chrono24 seems to have a pretty large selection but I've never bought anything from there.

Ebay has the largest selection of all, but you better do lots of research and be very careful so you don't get screwed.

It's a good watch, but the Rangeman does everything the Frogman does and more, that's why I got it.

I had a specific reasons for getting it though, as I was a soldier and was doing some pretty crazy stuff, I actually used the compass feature to plot an azimuth for my map, and the sun rise and set feature was invaluable for letting me know when I needed to get my night vision ready.
Outside of a hardcore outdoorsy type or military or law enforcement, I can't see people using these watches as they're huge, bulky, ugly as sin. Doesn't seem an everyday watch though.

The blued hands pop off the dial in pics and in person far more than the gold. Furthermore, the reason the blue is better in the long run is that the champagne dial is what reflects in low light situations, so you want contrasting hands to tell the time easily. e.g. With a black dial, you want white hands (think Speedmaster), and with a white dial, you want black hands. With the reflective face on this watch, you want darker hands to contrast, so go blue for the long run.

The Gold tends to look really good on the black face version. Is this the same Anon from last week?

No problem Anon. I'm very happy with mine, though I got it from watchunique (based in Netherlands I think). As I said before, HKED has a sterling reputation, so it should be fine when you receive it.

Usually they come on shitty straps, so be prepared to buy a better one if you feel the need. It's a surprisingly light watch (as in, not heavy), and the acrylic crystal bends the light in a really cool way (I'm used to sapphire crystals, so this was a cool gimmick I wanted to experience, like with the Speedys).

Also, if this is your first mechanical winding watch, then you might experience what I did when I got mine. Normally I have a tiny moment at the end of the day when I think to myself whether or not I've worn my automatic wind Omega enough for it to survive the night and keep time. With the manual wind 1963, there is no stress at all...you wind it up when you want to use it, set the time, and off you go. If it stops after 2 days and you're not wearing it, that's no problem...you just let it rest until the next time you want to wear it.

I don't know...it shouldn't be stressful, but I've come to actually enjoy manual wind watches a lot lately, and I definitely will never get a watch winder...but these are the random things of life.

The watch is actually quite thick, so I've found that having it on a nato actually doesn't work for me too well.

That being said, there's lots of potential for colours. Red and blue work because it makes the hands pop. Traditional brown works because of the face, and of course black always. Hell, even bright yellow or gold works (because of the indices); it's a very versatile watch in terms of dressing up/down.

Hope you can sleep Anon...I was excited as hell for mine for two weeks straight...

It's been a year, and mine is still holding to +0.5 per day. It's possible your information is out of date or simply inaccurate. If you look on the WUS forum, there is plenty of room for people to complain about the watch if it was a complete unreliable shitter. But given the numbers of satisfied vs. non, I think it's safe to say it's like any other low-budget mechanical. If the movement is well oiled and clean, then the watch will run as well as any Venus 175.

Today a customer brought me a late-production Bulova Accutron he bought on Ebay for examination, whether it works or not. Looks like he didn't even know what tuning-forks were.

So I replace the West-German (obviously dead by now) mercury-oxide battery with a new silver-oxide one, give the watch a light whack against the workbench and it starts right up.

He asked me whether it needs a service, I told him it won't hurt, but there's only probably one or two watchmakers in the country who can service tuning-forks, and I can't responsibly take it in for service, as I've never done it either.

Anyway it was the first Accutron I've seen someone have irl, apart from mine, a Citizen Hisonic clone, pic related. I've won two more Hisonics on Buyee, I'll be servicing those, so if I fuck up I'll still have a working one.

Thanks Anon; ignore the troll, it's not me. I find the Seagull to be an exceptional watch for the price-point. It's essentially 'your first column-wheel manual-wind chronograph'. The finishing is fine but ordinary and very basic, the hands look like they were cut using rather blunt scissors, and on close inspection with a loupe you do see how the movement is definitely a reliable workhorse but is not at all 'finished' in the way that even a basic Omega pre-co-axial movement would be finished (I'm thinking the older Speedy 861s or the Seamasters that use the ETA ebauche).

It almost reminds me of the 1960s, when a watch was something you could afford after a week of pay. This like that; a mechanical watch that is basic, reliable, and affordable, without bells and whistles. No selling points of 'heritage', 'tradition', 'craftsmanship', etc.. No selling points of 'social status' or name recognition'. Just a watch that tells time reliably and accurately, and is affordable.

I still think that if Seiko had the interest in this movement, they could produce a similar one with better finishing like their low-end mechanicals that we see here. That would destroy the competition....

I reached it a month or so ago. I came to the conclusion that money spent on a physical object (that isn't directly related to my survival) was money destroyed. That in truth it would be far better for me to focus on having my money 'work' for me through investments etc.

The worst part was that I thought I'd test myself, because watches really are the only other thing I would love to spend money on, so I went out to try a bunch of them on that I'd always 'dreamed' about. Rolex Day-Date, JLC Reverso, Speedy, etc. It was the most disappointing thing...the Rolex definitely wasn't worth what they were asking for it, the JLC felt so light that as my brother put it, 'it could have come out of one of those gumball machines at the arcade', and for whatever reason the Speedy looked awful on my wrist (for the first time in my life...normally it looks amazing).

I'm cured of the need to buy physical possessions just because they're there. As for visiting these threads...well, I come here because you never know what you'll see, and I enjoy bantering with some of the regulars about random stuff. Also, there's always an Anon who is coming across the Seagull for the first time, so I can at least let them know that it probably won't stop working if they clap their hands.

As for your collection, keep the chronograph...it's the only one that does something different. That's what I'd do. I have a few watches in my collection, but I only regularly wear 1, with a second one for when I feel like something different. Having more than 3 watches would be a nightmare for me....I'm the kinda guy who wants one for all time.

Omega Seamaster pre-co-axial (from around 1995) is my primary workhorse and diving backup, and I got it full serviced from Omega last January so it's like-new; the Seagull 1963 is the secondary, which I use for fun (and no water).

My first mechanical was a Rotary I bought as a student, and it uses a Miyota movement that is automatic winding. I never wear it, but I remember good times with it. I had two Panerais, and they're both with my brother now and he enjoys them. I didn't want to sell them, as the titanium with the bracelet is very rare now, and so I gave them to him because he likes those for their look.

Beyond that, I never bothered. Earlier this year, I was planning to get the grail, but once I'd achieved the capability (i.e. saved enough for it) I stopped wanting it. I don't know...something clicked in my head that made me think this whole thing was rather foolish. Not in a bad way, per say...just that now that it was no longer a grail, or nearly unattainable, the value of having it on my wrist plummeted. Then that feeling translated into lots of other things as well, and I began to feel like the value of something I own comes directly from the experiences I've had with that object through my life. That's what makes it unique. Now, if I didn't have a single watch at all, and I had to buy one, that's another story. But I have plenty of them....and the ones I wear the most are the ones that have been through great and difficult times with me.

I still like watch aesthetics and looking at beautiful things, of course. But the need, the feeling of wanting to own something has left me entirely. Such is life...

>Pic is the titanium. My bro loves it, so at least someone is wearing it and enjoying it, and it stays in the family. The two-piece bracelet was normal back then...now they do a simpler and less costly one-piece...that's why it's rare. I know people here don't like Panerais, but to each his own.

Seiko will always be linked to cheap XX$ watches, they’re trying to distinguish their Grand Seiko line but it will never work. Normies would laugh behind your back when they find out how much you paid for a “Seiko”, they try to hold back turning their noses as they say “nice Seiko”, WIS people act interested but deep down you know it’s always about the European watches. There’s no zing, there’s no oohs and aahs with a watch bearing the name Seiko on its dial. It all boils down to brand perception. It just looks so desperate when you go justify it with “but the finishing!!1!1”. Here’s a fact it’s the Japanese trying to compete with the Europeans and not the other way around.
