Good morning wt.

The Omega 613 was a manual-wind version of the 56x series. Omega put it on the relaunched Cosmic line (which used to be a traditional looking triple calendar). It is one of the earliest omegas with a proper date quickset; you pull the crown past the time setting g position to advance the date. It does mean you need to be careful setting the time around midnight; if you pull the crown too far, you can activate the quickset while the date change is in the process of happening (and it does have an instantaneous date change mechanism, and is this prone to damage from quicksetting while the date mechanism is engaged).

The moonwatch with the hesalite (acrylic) crystal is more prone to scratches than sapphire, but it won't shatter like sapphire could. Just get some polywatch to polish the crystal if you scratch it. As for servicing the movement it's about the same as any other mechanical movement. Every 5 years is recommended to get it serviced. It being a chrono movement will cost a bit more than just a standard 3-hander movement due to the complexity.

Tudor is actually owned by Rolex, they're like a sister brand, designed specifically to make watches which are well made but to a lower price point than Rolex.

They're not a Rolex in terms of prestige, and the finishes/designs are not what you'll see with Rolex (their dive watch is chunkier and less svelte than a sub, with no white gold markers, for example), but they make solid high quality watches with in house movements and relatively "fun" designs for a pretty good price in their segment. The Black Bay GMT is an especially good value, IMO, for what you're getting.

Tudor is innovating, they're coming up with in house movements, they're improving designs. Build quality is as good as anywhere. The BB58 is basically perfect size-wise which shows they're trying to be better and that's refreshing to see from a brand that was always just Rolex Lite. And they're cheaper than Rolex which makes them excellent value.

Rolex has been riding the same fame for decades and refuses to innovate and get better and instead relies on their name knowing boomers will always buy them because of it.

If you're rich, get a Rolex. If you're a young professional trying to establish yourself and want a watch that makes a statement without draining the bank account, get a Tudor.

I need a watch for several upcoming events in January I have to go to. The only one I have is a Casio AE1200WH-1B since I like the look but recently the plastic face cracked when I was on the job at the range.

I was originally going to just another one for like $20 but I still need one when I am not out in the dust all day being physical. I found pic related in a google search and was going to get it but turns out its a limited watch and is thousands of dollars.

Fuck me.

Since I know fuck all about watches, maybe one of you guys can suggest me something similar to pic related for under $200 or anything different you think is /fa/ approved.

Im going to a business event with international people from Asia and 2 weddings, one here in states and one overseas in South East Asia.

You might be able to find deals on the Timex Marlin at around that price. That's for a mechanical, 34 mm. Looks pretty classy, can be dressed down or up.

Also check out the Orient Bambino, lots of different dials and colour choices. These are automatic watches. The only caveat is the irregular lug size - he'll be pretty much stuck with the leather strap that comes with the watch. A bit cheaper than the Marlin and larger size, too.

If he's more of a practical kind of guy, get him a Citizen Eco-Drive instead. Solar quartz watches, a lot of options to choose from. I'm sure you can find something he'll like in this range.

None. Regulars can ignore my post from now on, as they've probably seen it a million times.

I received mine in perfect condition, aside from a chronograph wheel engagement issue which was easily corrected by my watchman. Currently it runs +0.5/day, though his timographer thing had it under 0.5 for the main orientations (crown up and dial up). It's been almost a year I think...and it's performed excellently.

Yes, it's thick, but that's what happens with this kind of chronograph movement plus acrylic crystal. Given that I bought it for the aesthetics (1960's China) and for the performance (if well regulated, it's an excellent movement), I have no complaints.

Yup. But it's also a column-wheel manual wind chronograph, which is perhaps the only one you can buy new for under 500$ in today's market. Normally a column-wheel chrono will run you at least 1500, depending on who makes it.

If you want your first mechanical chronograph, you can't go wrong with this. The only thing you need to do is have a trusted watchman look at it when you receive it, just to make sure everything is okay. Then you can wear it like any other watch. There's a meme about the watch breaking if you clap your hands...but really, it's like any low-cost watch: if the movement is in order (well lubricated, clean, well adjusted) then it'll run according to the quality of the movement, and the Venus movement was one of the most well-respected chronograph movements for its time.

For me it's a fun watch; not only used to time pizzas in the oven but also to wear when I want something with more pizzazz and fun-factor compared with my Seamaster. Also, it has satisfied my initial want for a Speedmaster, as the 1963 is essentially the same watch in terms of function (though obviously different in terms of aesthetics and build quality). In other words, I know what it's like to own a mechanical chronograph. Mystery solved.

>>13941198
Nope, mine is the 38mm, but I got it from the dealer in the Netherlands. There are tonnes of variants, but this dealer had the best price for my shipping location, and at the time had a very good reputation in terms of delivering watches that weren't problematic or in need of serious repair.

I initially wanted to get the 42mm, but then I noticed that the hands don't hit the indices because they're too small on that watch...it threw me off, and I hated it, so I went for the original.

Yeah, but here's what you're dealing with. In short, watches are separated into two types: mechanical (driven by a mainspring), and quartz (usually battery powered). Quartz watches will be in general far cheaper, and mechanical will usually be 120$ or so and up.

With quartz watches, you can almost have any aesthetic you want (tool watch, 'nice' watch, etc.) within a reasonable price range. With mechanicals however the prices become very steep very quickly depending on the aesthetic.

Perhaps Seiko or Citizen are your best bets for a 'nice' looking watch that isn't going to cost you thousands of dollars. Here's another Citizen that I personally like, though I'll try and find a pic of my favorite eco-drive formal watch they have...hold on.

If you go mechanical, you can always go Seiko as well: other Anons can vouch for them and give you more info.

Finally, just remember that in many situations, no one cares what watch you're wearing. If you're wearing a suit, it'll be under your sleeve, and since most people today don't wear watches anyway, it's not going to matter if you choose not to spend money on one. If you buy a watch, it should be something you want, not really something you need...at least in this world.

Well for work a watch is useful but I would never buy anything over the $20 I spent on mine since its likely to get damaged in a few months time and need to be replaced. But I would like to wear a nicer one when not at work and these upcoming events gave me a good opportunity to buy that nicer watch. I just didnt know anything. And that watch I posted here >>13941161 I only liked because it was the same brand but it had that nicer look and rugged aesthetic but the price was way more than I thought.

lol I couldn't help it...it's a a thing of beauty, so I posted it.

Tool watches are essentially like what you posted: watches built for ruggedness and function. Under normal conditions, one would not wear a watch like this for formal occasions like weddings. For formality, you would look for something that is very simple (i.e. telling the time only, and maybe with a date window), that has hands instead of digits, and is a valuable material (gold/silver). Something that doesn't stand out, but that is quietly respectable, dignified, and obviously somewhat expensive. Refined, in other words.

That's why I wouldn't recommend you going in that aesthetic direction that you mentioned (i.e. more like the tool watch kind that you posted in the pic). This is the problem. If you go in a different direction, you might not wear it outside of the events you have, which means it's kind of a waste of money. Getting an expensive tool watch in my view is a little stupid, because the whole point of a tool watch is that it's disposable and easy to replace. Granted, if you have the money and you don't care, then go for it. But even people with diver watches don't dive with them for fear of them flooding (I do, but I'm obviously in the minority for Seamaster owners).

>>13941293
>>13941300
Definitely consider the Orient. There are lots of variants, and it's affordable and the pics always look good. I've heard various reports that they're loud (the mechanical movement can tick loudly) but other than that, I haven't heard any bad things about them.

Go with what sings to you. Try them both on, see how they look on your wrist. Mine is the old version, the one with the modified ETA movement. The new ones have the co-axial, with minor changes like applied hour markers, a longer minute hand, etc. The Tudors are fine too, though they might have a bad rap just because it's been known as the 'poor-man's Rolex' for so long. But I've never heard a bad thing about the actual watches from owners.

If the price isn't the problem, then in truth just go try them on and see what you think. I was horrified when I tried on a Reverso for the first time because it was so damn light compared with any of my other watches....it felt like the kind of watch you get out of a gumball machine at the local arcade. Furthermore, when I looked at it closely, the finishing on the casing wasn't particularly impressive...and the JLC runs about double what I'd normally pay for a basic Omega, and that doesn't even count the pre-owned market.

I've never handled a Tudor, as the aesthetic doesn't appeal to me. But if they're Rolex engineered, then in all honesty I don't see any downsides. Most people today don't know the connection of those brands, so really just buy it for yourself. A snob will be snobby no matter what, but if the watch makes you happy, then in a sense that's all that matters.

In today's world, buying a watch for more than 2$ means you're buying it for more than practicality. In other words, aesthetics, beauty, status; all of those things become reasons why you're buying a watch that costs more. Because of this, it becomes more and more difficult to 'justify' your purchase to others...which means you simply have to justify it to yourself.

When you put it on, do you smile? Does it give you good service? Are you okay with it losing or gaining time? That's all that matters in the long run.

In my experience, what makes a watch special is what the watch (and subsequently, the wearer) has been through.

For one, those are nappy-haired, weave-wearing, ghetto-ass nigresses that should be working at TSA, not fucking Rolex.
I bet even DJ Khaled was like "the fuck are these apes doing working here?".

And as ghetto-ass nigresses, those nails are part of the uniform.
And when you have nails like that + a severe excess of melanin, you will be incapable of ably performing semi-intricate tasks like sizing watch bracelets.
Which is why she needs fucking pliers to position a bracelet pin for re-insertion; see >>13939847

I like the size, but cuck-axial, and the tri-dials just do not fit. They should have either made the dials smaller, or not made the watch at all.

When you do it yourself, or personally pay a reputable watch maker to do it for you. Preferably only on watches that already had fucked dials, or Bocтoк tier watches with especially shitty dials.

There's some cool Seiko mods out there with hand made dials and hands.

I need to try one of these on. Dimensions look perfect and all round looks like a great watch for £2300.
