The El Primero only still exists because of it's history, by modern standards it's not a good chronograph movement at all.

Look at second hand watches, not just new. You'll get a lot more watch and choices for your money.

At that price point for a mechanical chronograph movement it certainly doesn't beat a lot. It's probably on par with the ETA Valjoux these days.

Oh don't get me wrong, the El Primero was very good for it's time. It was an amazing movement when it came out 50 years ago. However it's not perfect, far from it. For example Rolex had to change 50% of the movement to get it up their reliability and accuracy standards and even then it was still a pain to service.

The reason it lasted so long is that making a new chronograph movement from scratch is *hard*. When ALS released the Datograph it was a huge shock to the industry as no major watch brand had made a completely new in-house chronograph movement in almost 20 years. In the shift to bring movements in house many more firms have produced new (chronograph) movements and they are much better than those made in the 1960's and 70's. Technology moves on.

Is the El Primero kind of like buying a new vintage watch? I do know that many new watches especially Omega, Rolex and the ilk all produce modern, reliable, highly accurate movements that are more robust than vintage watches.

The EP does have 36k VPH though

A better comparison is probably Breitling, they have have a new in-house chronograph movement that's very very good. It's in their latest Heritage models iirc.

That's an apt description. I don't think Zenith have changed the movement design at all and only improved materials and manufacturing.

Higher VPH isn't always a good thing. It puts more stress and wear on the movement and doesn't always mean increased accuracy.
