As a watchmaker my perception of collecting watches changed.

I see a lot of people praising certain watch brands or manufacturers and shitting on others. Or worse, shitting on people for enjoying watches of any kind, of any brand. These people need to fuck off.

Except that one person who likes Daniel Wellington. Fuck that person.

And fuck people who shit on ETA movements. A well adjusted ETA movement will last you a long time and give you a VERY good performance.

Hell, I've been eyeing a Stowa Marine classic roman for myself for a while now. Hand wound, ETA movement, polished up. Good value for money.

In the end i've seen many watches from the inside and i have to say that performances really vary, except for Rolex and ETA movements. Hell, we had A. Lange watches that ran like shit but looked pretty. Or Pateks who ran just okay and were not as pretty (movement details, etc), but cost double the amount of what the Lange would have cost. And then i had a Seiko 2206-A from 1970s or 1980s, which performed incredible for a watch that age, that price. Hell, even the movement had high tolerances.

Not everyone can afford a Patek. But you should be clear about what you actually want from a mechanical watch and its brand. Value? Big name? Design? Performance? Craftmanship? Pick your poison.

And don't fool yourself with "in house movements". It's open to interpretation. If you think "Oh well, In-House-movements are movements/watches that are made entirely in that manufacture!" then maybe you could be right - except every manufacturer buys stuff from third parties. Indexes, small frames for the date, hands, mainsprings, etc. And don't get me started on how many luxury movements are based on old ETA movements. So depending on how you look at things either there are no in house movements, or you have to compromise.

eBay is a fantastic place to buy watches, prices are most competitive there and eBay buyer protection is very strong. Sure beats my experience trying to deal with a traditional auction house (never mind the 25% buyer premium).

>They shit on the brands that extremely overcharge for ETA movements when other brands at similar prices produce unique in house movements.

That's true. Stowa for example has some nice classic chronographs with Valjoux 7750 or 7755.

Meanwhile Breitling charges double or triple the amount of what Stowa wants. For what? The cheap dials? They have sturdy bracelets and cases but otherwise you're just paying for the name in that case. It's just i heard some people complain about swiss ETA movements because they are "mass produced".

>>13915854

Chinese watches. It depends. There are good chinese products and bad chinese products. I had mechanical Fossil watches - for that price and performance it's okay. Some had quartz Miyota movements that were good. But most chinese movements or watches were shit. Luxury, or better, highly priced chinese watches? Can't tell you much about that.

I don't support replicas. The shop i used to work for absolutely declined people who showed up with fake watches. We had some high quality Rolex fakes, but there are always telltale signs and in the end you spend a lot of money you could have saved for the real thing in the long run. If you support the replica market you are basically helping in making it more risky for you and others to buy the real deal. Just remember: There is a reason why replicas are that "cheap". Most of the time its the material thats too soft. Inside the movement. Not good.

>>13916022
>>13916048

Beware of grey market dealers. Things to look out for:

>Is it an original?
>DOES IT WORK?
>Did somebody open it?
>If yes? When's the last time someone serviced it?
>Was it serviced by the original manufacturer? Does he have proof?
>Is everything still original? Strap, dial, parts, glass, etc.
>When did he buy that shit? (Important if there is still warranty)
>Original Box, Papers, etc?

Ebay is risky but can have good deals. Otherwise use chronext or chrono24.

Not the guy that you're replying to, but thanks for that insight. That's quite interesting.

One thing I've been curious about that I'm not sure if you have any experience on, is I've always suspected certain homage brands come from basically the same place as the fakes, they just slap a different label on to somewhat split the income illegally and "honestly". Has any of your experience with homage watches shed any light on whether this is the case?

Very valid points. Totally agreed. One needs to have good experience with luxury watches. And even then you can get fucked over on ebay. On other sites too, but the chrono pages you posted have a reputation to lose so they will check theirs sellers or offer good buyer protection, i guess even better than ebay.

It's a citizen 7370. The second hand ticks once per second; at the time this was made, dead-beat seconds were still considered a desirable complication in a watch, and emphasized the precision of quartz watches at the time. Unlike modern cheap quartz watches, high-end quartz of the 70s and early 80s had accurate dial printing and the hands hit the indices very well.

That's a really nice vintage collection you got there, anon. A good mix between curious, tasteful and special designs and brands.

>>13916075
Don't forget that some old designs were so common they never bothered to copyright them. That's the case with Stowa and Nomos. Both relatively old brands. Stowa got bought by another guy years ago, but they still honor their history and design. They have "Antea" and Nomos has their "Tangente". Both are very similar, if not completely the same.

If someone buys the rights to a name, or the whole rights to certain designs and movements of said company, then they can try to produce watches in ye olde style. If they cant match the quality or enhance it, it's shit and just sad.

But on the other hand ... in case with Breitling you have a Valjoux 7750 chronograph movement. Breitlang takes their dial, case and laser engraves the rotor/ the heavy rotating thingy to wind the movement (sorry dont know the name in english) and that's it. Now you own a Breitling.

Then you have Omega, who release new editions every other year and homage THE SHIT out of themselves until the point it becomes annoying.

Just remember, if the company just imitates another watch brand - thats ok, but they should do a good job otherwise you shouldn't give them your money. Companies who make replicas or fakes if they aren't allowed to can go fuck themselves.

Otherwise, in my opinion, companies that do homage stuff RARELY can be a blast for the collector (see the new Rolex Pepsi, holy shit) and sometimes just confusing and too much (IM LOOKING AT YOU OMEGA). I hope i could answer your question.

>>13916084
Always ask for high definition pictures in certain positions. Front, back, from all sides (crown too!) and ask them to set a specific time in said pictures. Chrono and Chronext are good. Well, good for collectors and online dealers ... not so good for Jewellers and retailers.

Some brands offer refurbished (with warranty) on those sites.

Casio calculator + bond NATO = trap house watch

Bonus black pill on quartz from Jacques Ellul's Technological Bluff.

>We have quartz watches, which will not break down, which tell us the exact time without varying more than a second in a year. What good are they? Will they get us to meetings exactly on time? Will they help us to get up in the morning more easily? Will meetings we attend end precisely at the time announced? Not at all! These watches are no use whatever except perhaps for navigators (to plot their position). What is more, they also come with remarkable extra features which might waken us up to a charming melody or enable us to do astonishing calculations. An admiring friend told me one day that thanks to his watch,if I told him the day and year of my birth, he could tell me on what day of the week I was born and how many days I had lived thus far. I thanked him for his kindness but had no interest in such data. What is the point of so ingenious and learned an instrument when it obtains such absurd results?

Wut. What SNK? I've got an 809, and despite my Auschwitz tier wrist theres a few links left. Are you sure you removed all the links? Did you remove some push pins, or did you violently take the links apart by removing the metal pin from the link itself? The snk809 has a folded link bracelet that you can only take a part with relatively much force for such a fragile feeling thing.. Look up a video on resizing folded links.

If you really shortened to the max and can't fit, get an aftermarket strap. NATOs and leather straps tend to have enough holes for the skinniest of wrists, but you can punch an extra hole where needed.
