>most interesting quartz
The current citizen haq movements are excellent - Eco drive, 5spy. But they aren't particularly unique. They are well finished and have well-calibrated digital count TC, but I would say they are more "excellent" than "interesting". The 0100 that's coming out soon is groundbreaking on a technical level but it's not out yet.

Junghans has their new haq watch that claims 7spy without tc, but with a 32670hz crystal (rather than the common 32768) and a complex inhibition mechanism. If that's actually the true spec it's very interesting they were able to achieve that with a low-frequency crystal and no TC but I haven't seen any good data yet.

The spring drive is certainly a modern interesting quartz movement, that would probably be my pick at this point in terms of modern production quartz.

Some other kind of interesting stuff going on in quartz at the moment t:
> Mondaine stop2go. Basic timing circuit but the unusual hand motion is certainly interesting.
> Citizen campanola constellation watch: like the out of production astrodea and accurist celestial, has two gear trains, with one providing sidereal time.
> Ventura: automatic LCD digital watch, pretty unique, though again nothing unusual with the timing package itself
> bulova UHF: does merit a mention at least, the 262khz triple-prong fork is interesting, even if their original 10spy spec turned out to be way off.
> Seiko dolce: only current high-frequency tc quartz watch at the moment, I think?
> Longines vhp: again, nothing that groundbreaking, but cheapest 5spy has ever been I believe.
> Casio tough movement: the hand alignment mechanism is neat. Junghans I believe also has something similar.

A bit of horological history coming at you sad, sad fuckers.

Ever wondered why all those cheap chinese mechanical watches use that one, 99% of the cases skeletonized, movement?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_standard_movement

http://chinesewatchwiki.net/Chinese_Standard_Movement

TL;DR
The chinese commie goverment wanted to create a reliable stainless steel cased watch for the good citizens of the peoples republic in the 70s.
They came up with the standard chinese movement and forced nearly all the factories to produce it, chucking out reliable watches like never before.

Fast forward to the fall of the iron curtain and that movement was the norm in nearly all chinese watches. The movement was produced in many factories which in the now somewhat free market economy meant that companies could buy the movements from the cheapest producer. Thus the standard of manufacturing lowered constantly and the movement ended up ticking in 10 buck shitters you find in aliexpress and some malls. I suppose most of them are skeletonized merely to save material on production.

Why do the right handed versions of watches still got the crown on the right? Surely that digs into your hand and you never actually use the crown whilst it’s on your wrist.
I’m a right wrist master race.

Because right handed people will hold the watch in their left hand whilst winding or adjusting the time. So the crown needs to be on the right.
