I love brutalism for certain applications, like institutional buildings. but honestly any city with a large quantity of brutalist buildings is just cold and alienating.
better as accent architecture.

I feel like interaction between plants and concrete eases this problem with brutalism, through use of surrounding parks and inbuilt planters. It still shouldn't make up an entire city, but it makes it takes away the cold, impersonal edge.

I live in something like this and no one uses the streets and I haven't spoken to one of my neighbors since they moved in a year ago. There is no one walking around ever people just take there cars or the bus. I haven't been in my private backyard for 6 months. The on;y good thing is that there is less maintenance. This type of construction does nothing good for the human mind or society usually when it is not done as a social experiment or as experimental architectural development there done to save space as is the case for me. Having a detached or a apartment with a floor-plan you can change if you want is the better way to go. Also public places in city's are where people do heroin and homeless people sleep and sit.

sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't and its really vague as to why.
in any case we live in an extremely disenfranchised, community-devoid, and automotively dependent era and I think every attempt needs to be made to combat that wherever possible. Design can do its part but on its own its not the magic bullet to societal woes.

Generally form what I see walking around where I live the more higher income they are generally the better they fair off. I assume its a combination of better construction and cleaner residents as well as higher HOA dues. Generally ones with courtyards that are enclosed and not accessible or visible do better as well.

common design knowledge in that sphere says want a space to have passive surveillance, that's the best form of security. If its closed off or has limited visibility that tends to be when you get criminal or seedy activity.

This is quite a sad one, built in 1961, and once considered one of the most modern buildings in the city of São Paulo, it was owned by the Brasilian federal government, and was abandoned and left to rot.

It was occupied a few years ago by radical leftist political movements and absolutely trashed, and unfortunately went down earlier this year, because of a massive fire.

It still makes me sad, since it was a special building for me, personally.
